Re: Ryan Lester

Brett Burton injury update

Ryan had his pin removed last Friday so he was in the moon boot for a couple of days, now out of it so we expect him to be back up and running in the next few days. He’s feeling a lot better for having the pin removed.

Re: Who do we delist?

I think Lester will be that tall goal kicking midfielder.

Yep - this is where I'd like to see him develop. From what I saw, whilst he'd be a good backman, he could be a gun midfielder/forward. He moves so well and has great awareness.

Re: Ryan Lester

Has there been any recent news? Burton hasn't given us much recently.

With this sort of injury any sort of setback would be very bad for a youngster I think it'd be fair for us to be excited about even if a few others have passed him in the pecking order.

With Karnezis and ACorn jumping him in he pecking order for a third tall/key forward it'll be interesting to see how he goes down back or hopefully with a huge pre-season in the middle. Ideally it'd be great if he could turn into a Josh Kennedy or Jobe Watson clearance specialist type player.

That's an interesting comparison I hadn't considered before, but now that you mention it they do have similar physiques, don't they? At 190cm Watson is only 1cm shorter than Lester and while he still has 10kg on him, Ryan'll fill out pretty quickly I reckon.

And I meant the Josh Kennedy from Sydney not the WC player.

Mundy is another player he can aspire to be like.

Re: Ryan Lester

It's interesting to hear all the thoughts on Lester.

Im still hoping that he can be that third tall in defence and provide some much needed run back there as well as shut down his opponent.

To me he still seems like the ideal replacement for the role that Patfull is playing in a couple of years, very exeited to see him play again next year!

Looks like a keeper

With Lester being pick 28 in the 2010 draft many posters were diving for the mock drafts to see what we had on hands. With the best minds in the land analysing him he was not as highly touted as others.

Lester was presented with the number 35 jumper which was most recently worn by the 2010 Club Champion.

During the preseason he was noted as having well developed legs as well as good core strength. This was evident in the NAB cup as he played well as a lead-up forward.

Lester made his debut in Round 1 against Fremantle at the Gabba. Named on the interchange bench he played the role of the third forward. His first AFL goal was via a little toe poke on his non-preferred side under pressure.

The first two rounds as the third forward showed that he was strong overhead and although he didn’t excel in that position it shouldn’t be completely ruled out.

In round 3 against Melbourne he was moved down back and played a key defensive role. He looked comfortable and played his role really well. One of his strengths was his ability to read the play. After the game Lester had some soreness in his right foot. A second set of scans revealed this to be a partially ruptured linsfranc ligament. This unfortunately kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Judging on his first three rounds he looks as though he will be an AFL player. What position he ends up playing is an unknown but in this current Lions side there are still plenty of spots up for grabs.

Re: Ryan Lester

Adrian Fletcher

He’s a beauty. We didn’t see much of his this year which was disappointing. He’s a leader in his own right. You know he’ll turn up and play. He’s good overhead, brave, can play third tall in the forward line or third tall down back. One day he’ll move into the midfield.

Re: Ryan Lester

This really stood out as super complementary from Fletch. I liked what I saw of him and I am intrigued by the fact that he is seen as a midfielder long term.

Re: Ryan Lester

Just to bump this up - I went to school with his brother, ran into him at my sister's deb as my sister and his sister are good friends at school. Was awhile back though, he was still in the moon boot. But as I was saying, ran into his brother a couple of weeks ago, asked him how he was going, said he was really pumped for pre-season since he's been out so long.

Re: Ryan Lester

Lester showed last year that he has the physical maturity to play senior footy, but I'm still unsure of what his capabilities are. Are we hoping for a good solid player, or does he have the tools to be a potential All-Australian?

I'm hoping for a solid B-grader. I don't think he'll ever be spectacular, but should fill a role very honestly as a third tall (fwd or back - with the flexibility to play on talls or smalls) possibly pinch-hitting in the middle. Think Staker.

Graham Hadley

“Ryan was discovered by a Lions staffer in 2009, when he was playing mainly across half forward as a bottom age Oakleigh Charger.

We followed him closely at the start of 2010 and, ironically, he broke his thumb early in the first quarter of his first game.

He recovered in time to represent Victoria Metro in the U18 Championships where he played as a key defender for the first time in his career. He acquitted himself very well, showing great versatility and adaptability.

He was an attractive size (191cm), showed great versatility, had excellent game understanding and was considered value at Pick No.28 - which edged out Essendon who were potentially looking at drafting him with their Pick No.31.”

Ryan Lester: Wounded Lion rebuilding career
BY ROY WARD
19 Dec, 2011 01:00 AM

Lester flew for a mark against Melbourne and landed awkwardly; he kept playing thinking the pain was temporary. It was only days later, when his foot was still sore, he realised something was wrong.

"Our physios sent me for a scan and it found I had a Lisfranc fracture and would miss the rest of the season," he said.
"I had torn a ligament and bones had shifted in my foot.
"They told me they've never seen an AFL player get this injury. It's more a rugby league injury."
For a player in a new city, spending so much time separated from his teammates was tough.
"Mentally those individual sessions become a challenge but it's all part of being an AFL footballer and you've got to do your best in difficult circumstances," he said.

Lester is doing his best to hit 100 per cent fitness and is beginning to re-enter full Lions training. He said he was still 35 seconds off his best three-kilometre time trial but was slowly regaining confidence in his feet. Off the field Lester believes the move interstate has made him grow up in a hurry. "Moving away changed my life in a lot of ways but I think it was the best thing for me."

Re: Ryan Lester

Lester to build on promising start
3:59 PM Tue 20 Dec, 2011

Talented utility Ryan Lester proved one of the surprise packets for the Brisbane Lions in 2011 - albeit for only a short period of time.

While much of the fans’ pre-season hype surrounded the Club’s first selection from the 2010 AFL National Draft Jared Polec, Lester proved the quiet achiever among the crop of draftees.

The 19 year-old was the Lions’ third selection (Pick No.28 overall) from the 2010 National Draft and arrived at the Club with little fanfare, particularly considering he was spent much of his final year with the Oakleigh Chargers hampered by injuries.

But he knuckled down during his first pre-season with the Club, and his supreme work ethic quickly caught the attention of the Lions’ coaching staff.

Re: Ryan Lester

Interested to see what he offers in 2012. Not real sure what to expect, he is a high enough draft pick, and has the right build, to make it look like he should bring the goods, but just dont know. I cant see him becoming a star, more "just a player".

Re: Ryan Lester

Does anyone know which group (forwards or backs) that he's training with this year?

The times I've seen him running around at public training sessions he has largely been hanging around with the forwards group.

Re: Ryan Lester

I tend to disagree with with others on lester. Whilst I'm not saying he will be a star I think he will be more then just a playetr. I think he will become a VERT GOOD player.n I really like what I see from this guy

That's the camp I am in...a bit better than very good actually...I would go more for excellent.

Re: Ryan Lester

Video: 2nd year players - Lester, Harvey, Karnezis

"It’s more friendly with the guys. So you’re not just training with your idols, you’re training with your mates which makes it a lot more enjoyable. I learnt that I needed to be a little bit stronger than I was when I first came to the club, so I’ve been able to put on a bit of size last year (which has) helped me so far this pre-season."

"Being at an AFL club you have the luxury of watching your training vision after every session, so you can pick up on small things. I didn’t really play a lot up forward (before) I first came to the club and that’s sorta’ where I’ve being playing, so I’ve had a lot of improvements in the knowledge of a forward. Leading patterns and contested work and having Mark Harvey come to the club has been really good for me."

- on recovery from his footy injury

"I guess you’ve to try to look at the positives. I was out for four or five months, but I was only 82 kilos whereas I need to be around 87, so that gave me time to put on about five kilos."

"My main goal is to play the majority of the season. Last year it was disappointing, I only got to play three games, so just being on the park and being able to run around would be good."
