unbelievable game to end an unbelievable season

hats off to our opponents in the Furies who upped the intensity to a level i've never experienced. kudos to boncer34 & Logger for the most entertaining cast of qooty i've ever read.

but for my boys, what a win! a lot of us were overwhelmed with the big stage early but StFly and BoshtrichBurger carried us early. big props to winty for kicking some very important goals throughout. i think him and Jeremias should room together next season... Teeth149 stepped up big time after moving into the ruck, putting another notch in the success column for our recruiting department. Tayl0r was as stubborn as ever in the back half, while my midfield brahs (you know who you are) all got the job done.

and finally, our main man peterss should be soaking up all the glory he can. he deserves it more than ever. i was thinking he would get BOG but even if he did, being the selfless captain he is, he would've sliced it up into 20 pieces and given us all a slice.

congrats my fellow Gumbies, and also BoshtrichBurger for receiving the honour. you have a heart of clay.

VIVA LA GUMBIES

yeah exactly my point... nfi how it works, please explain? do i have a say on my disposals lol?
I'm pretty sure you don't. It's a computer simulation. Basically, you rant and rave on a thread all week, and then that sorta counts towards nothing.
Don't get me wrong, I find it great fun

Technically no, but we all hold onto the belief that factors such as culture, team activity and spirit all contribute, which you could probably describe as karma. The more you contribute to your team and the overall SFA (keeping in mind quality > quantity), the better position on the field your captain will likely give you, and certain positions tend to play better so you can have some kind of a bearing on it.

THE OKEYDOKE REVIEW
Geelong Gumbies - Season 16 Premiers
Season 16 ended with an almighty display of QOOTY. The final game of the season could not have been scripted any better. A one point victory to the Gumbies, whose midfield brigade dominated the season. There are so many angles to this game. I will make an effort to explore a few of them. But first, let's have a look at the game.

This was a terrific display of fantasy football. A well timed match that had a sensational league wide attendance. Boncer's Castle has never seen a game of QOOTY before this. And it was a game that will not be forgotten by whatever monsters lurk in his dungeon.
Given the Gumbies won by only a point and the game was tight throughout, it was surprising to note that the Gumbies actually held the lead at every change. The Gumbies dominated the game early, wasting some simple opportunities. 3.7 was their tally at the quarter time break, but those behinds were becoming an epidemic. One after the other, easy shots were being missed.
This was addressed at quarter time, and it took co-captain StFly to stamp his authority on the game. The behinds kept coming...Winty had a massive chance early in the second quarter which went begging yet again. Enter StFly:
2 : 4.25 {lFP} - Winty puts it through for a behind.
Fighting Furies : 3.3.21
Geelong Gumbies : 3.8.26
2 : 4.32 {FB} - deanbigfooty signals for his teammates to present.
2 : 4.36 - <<< BoshtrichBurger is coming on to replace whoopsman >>>2 : 4.42 {FB} - deanbigfooty sizes the options in front of him.
2 : 4.46 {FB} - deanbigfooty didn't make an effort and is penalised.
2 : 4.49 {FF} - StFly wants to get on with proceedings.
2 : 4.54 {FF} - StFly nearly got done for running too far but he remembers to bounce at last.
2 : 4.56 {FF} - Surely StFly wouldn't miss this.
2 : 5.01 {FF} - You won't see too many better than that. Champagne football.
Fighting Furies : 3.3.21
Geelong Gumbies : 4.8.32
Although early in the second quarter, this was a massive play for the Gumbies. The Furies, as they did all day, were closing. The Gumbies were on top in the game and yet failing to convert. StFly took the pressure to another level as the full back, deanbigfooty was called to play on. He never stood a chance. What was incredible about StFlys efforts was that after winning the free kick from point blank range, he played on. With a touch of arrogance and flair, he ran around deanbigfooty to run salt into the wounds (nearly running too far in the meantime). He put it through and the Gumbies were steered back on track.
The Gumbies led for the entire first half, and the midfield was right on top. Mr Gor, Peterss, A Bit High and Teeth really turned it on. And yet the Furies proved why they were on the biggest stage of the SFA. They weren't done with yet. They started the premiership quarter with an almighty force. Nuffers was a big player for the Furies in this quarter and spudregus didn't stop getting the football. It looked as if the Furies would take a lead into the 3/4 time break. Enter vintage Winty.
3 : 22.12 {lFP} - winty to send the ball forward.
3 : 22.15 {lFP} - This for the opportunity of a lifetime.
3 : 22.19 {lFP} - That's one of those special goals. Number 2 for winty.
Fighting Furies : 12.7.79
Geelong Gumbies : 11.14.80
3 : 23.06 {rHFF} - Now wotdoiput has the ball. What can he do with it?.
3 : 23.1 {rHFF} - wotdoiput sells the dummy and helps himself to a bounce.
3 : 23.13 {lFP} - A short kick to winty.
3 : 23.17 {lFP} - winty spills the mark.
3 : 23.2 {lFP} - winty threads his way through traffic.
3 : 23.24 {lFP} - winty from point blank range.
3 : 23.27 {lFP} - Tremendous solo effort from winty results in a goal.
Fighting Furies : 12.7.79
Geelong Gumbies : 12.14.86
The last quarter is best seen to be believed. Saying it was "tight" would not do it justice. 9 goals were scored and the margin at the siren was just one point. The Furies' skipper stepped up with the game on the line. His massive goal put the Furies in front. They looked to have momentum:
4 : 11.52 {rHFF} - Cutty has possession.
4 : 11.55 {lFP} - He gets onto his right side and kicks to Filthy Sanchez.
4 : 11.59 {lFP} - Here's a chance for an opportunist rover.
4 : 12.02 {lFP} - Filthy Sanchez scoops up the ball.
4 : 12.06 {lFP} - Filthy Sanchez ignores a lead to have a shot.
4 : 12.09 {lFP} - What a goal.
Fighting Furies : 16.10.106
Geelong Gumbies : 14.16.100
A goal that had to be kicked. The skipper ignored his teammates to take responsibility. A captains goal. What followed was an arm wrestle. Winty showed some vintage form once again with a goal, but the sealer would be kicked by Mr Gor after many minutes of contested footy by both teams:
4 : 20.06 {C} - Here's a chance for an opportunist rover.
4 : 20.09 {C} - Who wants it? Mr Gor does. Great stuff.
4 : 20.14 {C} - Long shot at goal from Mr Gor.
4 : 20.17 {C} - Mr Gor gets the six points.
Fighting Furies : 16.10.106
Geelong Gumbies : 16.17.113
The margin would prove to be enough. The veteran, rfctigerarmy, put through a late one to give the Furies hope. But the Gumbies would prevail by the narrowest of margins in the most famous game of their history. Just one behind was the difference between success and failure. The point that made them the premiers.

"I LIKE THAT" - Grand Final Edition

Although the Burger won the Deestroy Medal, there is another player out there that deserves recognition. This player didn't even receive a vote in the Deestroy from our almighty sim. But MR GOR deserves every bit of praise his teammates are throwing his way. Mr Gor has had a terrific performance in the midfield this year, and he backed it up yet again. With 31 possessions and a goal, Mr Gor was my man of the match. He kept finding the footy and setting up goals at key moments. The key part of a midfield brigade which runs deep at the Gumbies. Mr Gor...Big time, big match...I LIKE THAT!
Reflection
I mentioned earlier, there are so many angles to this story. Let's start with the heartbreak.
FURIES FILTHY, BUT PROUD
It was the goal that put the Furies in the box seat to win the S16 premiership. And yet, it wasn't enough. Filthy Sanchez, who had a quiet game, stood up at the key moment. To have the game ripped from their hands for the second year running left the team heartbroken.
Vice Captain tigland spoke of the heartbreak after the game. "In Season 15 we kinda fell into the finals, then got on a hot streak to reach the GF. We honestly exceeded all expectations just by making it and to get within a kick was a fantastic effort. This season however we felt we were a stronger side. We are a tight nit group and have met every challenge we gave ourselves. Even when some in the league thought we didn't deserve a licence (Juggs), we pushed through the adversity and stormed into the GF. We were expecting to win last night and it hurts that we got so close. The are a lot of shattered boys this morning."
Tigland blamed the loss on a touch of nerves, and an inability to stay in the game for long enough. "We did sack multiple coaches during the season and that lack of guidance at 3 quarter time hurt us a bit.
There were a couple of surprising moves with captainblood17 being BOG until he was pulled late in the 3rd and I thought I was well on top in the ruck before I was pulled half way through the 3rd. A few of the boys had down games, but as most of you without Viagra know: its hard to stay up for long periods."

FURIES HONOURABLE IN DEFEAT
Furies Vice Captain Tigland has congratulated the Gumbies on turning history on its head and claiming the premiership. Tigland, who seemed devastated at the loss, was full of praise for his opposition:

We always enjoy playing the Gumbies and always enjoy our match threads with them. This one was no exception. They have a lot of solid contributors. Bostrich is always good value, Taylor has been a very good find for them. StFly loves a thesis and when we work out what he is saying I am sure we will banter back. Claypigeon as always was solid and even Petress showed up.

I Just want to say Congratulations to the Gumbies on a wonderful year. A top two finish followed up with a GF win. You were too good on the day and I am sure we will have some big battles again in season 17.

To our boys, thankyou again for another great year. We were close but not close enough. We already have been in recruiting mode and will have some big announcements in the next few weeks that will hopefully propels us to go one better next season. Keep your heads up. Enjoy Mad Monday or Wacky Wednesday, and we will see you all back 1 week before season 17 for pre-season training.

They say winners are grinners, and BB and Claypigeon were certainly up and about for the victors:

DESTROYING PERCEPTION - HOW THE GUMBIES GAINED RESPECT
The Gumbies have been a perennially unsuccessful club. On field, they were one of the longest serving clubs without a premiership. They won the wooden spoon last season. Off field, they had to deal with stereotypes and perceptions. I know, because admittedly, I fuelled a lot of these. Earlier this season, I admitted that I was wrong in some of my previous criticism. And I acknowledged the off-field bravery which had enabled them to become a seriously strong club on and off the field. The bravery to give their own team a voice through a voting process, the ability to develop some of their own young players and the masterstroke to go after and land a big fish in BB mid-season.

It hasn't happened overnight though. This premiership is merely the exclamation point on a season that has finally met the desires of the club's leadership. Build the club. Build respect. Attract good posters. Smash through the barriers of perception. With this premiership, the mission is accomplished.

Claypigeon explained that moving past the stereotype was the key to the premiership. "Winning the Premiership with the Gumbies was fantastic. .. Last season getting the spoon and fighting off a previously earned stereotype was a struggle. .. Hopefully the boys build it from here."

The boys he was referring to were his range of premiership teammates. "Peterss for carrying the torch for so long; Streets for bringing the Gumbies strength; Bucketss for stepping into the void at times; The humility and skill of Mr Gor, Tayl0r, Woopsman, wotdoiput and co; A Bit High for his feisty defence of everything G-bot; and finally everyone else including stalwarts Winty, Krish and the rest. Oh and BB for being our lucky leprechaun, Viva la Gumbies!"

NO TITLE, NO WORRIES
Claypigeon won't be remembered as a premiership Vice Captain. The reason for this, was his decision to stand down from the role pre-season. It is a move he does not regret. "Stepping down as the VC was the best thing I did. .. Possibly both for the Gumbies and myself. .. Gave me the space I needed and allowed others to fill the void."

Clay was an instrumental figure for the Gumbies both on and off the field, and suggested that stepping down from the VC position gave him more time to focus on contributing as a poster. "On a personal level I've enjoyed the season. Not likely my best but then I've enjoyed some personal accolades and don't need the constant limelight. I'd give myself a pass."

THE "LUCKY LEPRECHAUN"
Speaking of the limelight, one man has taken a fair share of it for the Gumbies. With an expanded ego not seen since the likes of...me... BoshtrichBurger has become one of the biggest stories out of this famous victory. A premiership player with the Wonders last season, BB requested a trade in the middle of S16 to the Gumbies. The Gumbies went on to win the premiership, and BB went on to be named the Deestroy medallist. It has been an incredible career for the enigmatic poster.

I sat down with BB shortly after the game:

You moved halfway through the season from one of the most successful clubs to one of the least successful clubs. You are now a premiership player for the Gumbies. What does it mean to you and how does it feel?
I had the dice in my hand, my own career fate at my disposal practically at the trade period table, and it was ultimately my decision if it was worth the gamble or not. It certainly was one of the most difficult decisions I've had to do in my short, yet rollercoaster-like career. To practically parlay my career on a glimmer of hope that is to help a family club like the Gumbies towards that elusive premiership, well I can say with added vigour and ego that it feels like a jackpot. I feel like a king amongst men, and a victorious soldier amongst the most deadly army that is the Gumbies in Green.

So I feel brilliant, I feel blessed to have gone through this history-in-the-making campaign with guys like Mr Gor, whoopsman, StFly, A Bit High, wotdoiput, peterss, Claypigeon, Tayl0r and so on and so forth. It feels brilliant to be standing here with the premiership won in nailbiting fashion, and it feels beautiful to have won it with a bunch of warriors that is the Gumby team.

If your career ended now would you identify yourself as a Wonder or Gumby the most?
¿por qué no tienen? I'm still in a state of euphoria to even think straight, let alone choose an allegiance to consider myself to align with. Both are clubs I hold dearly in my heart of hearts, and both are and will always be family to me.

Who stood up in the game when it mattered?
Almost everyone did, don't you think? However, if I had to single out a few moments etched in my brain, it would have to be that peterss goal in that arm-wrestling moment of the final term. That my friend, was a captains goal if I've ever seen one. One of the best. Simply the best.

geel15-20120803230606964097-620x414.jpg

CONCLUSION
What a game.

In the end it came down to a battle of the midfields. A vintage cameo from Winty and an important goal from StFly were my highlights. But the midfield brigade of the Gumbies, which went way too deep, outmuscled the Furies by the narrowest of margins.

After back to back heartbreaks, the Furies have some work to do to get back up for S17.

The Gumbies, on the other hand, are enjoying the sweet taste of success. The Okeydoke Review has secured images of "whacky wednesday" which can not be published due to implicit content.

Commiserations to the losers, congratulations to the victors. What a fitting end to a terrific season of QOOTY.

The Geelong Gumbies take out the Season 16 premiership by 1 point!

Logger: Ladies and Gentlemen, without further adieu, because there's been far too much of that already, is:
Clearly the umpire's favourite all day long with 6 free kicks, BB's dream Grand Final closes with the Deestroy medal around his neck having scored 3 votes from the sim. 2 votes went to Teeth149 , the nuggetty little back pocket who managed to play a blinding game in the ruck, for which the umpires awarded him two votes. And with one vote was Furies midfielder Grockadoc, who snagged a vote despite forgetting to show up until midway through the third quarter.

Controversy there as the umpires failed to recognise the spectacular game played by Mr Gor, but good luck to anyone who has to banter against BB next season with the sort of game he played and the sort of ego he's accrued.

This ends the official coverage of the Season 16 Sweet FA Grand Final. If you want to relive the glory, the game can always be replayed on YouTube at your convenience. Or, you know, go back about 12 pages.
...I can't believe it...

Words cannot describe what I'm feeling like at the moment. Never in a gazillion years would I've even thought that one day I would don, around my neck, the BoG Deestroy Medal in a GF... It comes as a shock, a pleasant surprise at that. Certainly I would've thought my main man Mr Gor would've won this, he was superman out their on the field. We wouldn't have won this without him, or any of our 20-man squad on the day.

Or even our el co-captaino in peterss would've been my tip for the medal if Gor didn't... He equaled my tackle and FF tally whilst racking up the touches and kicking a vital goal to boot. So shock horror is what I'm experiencing, but it is horror of the happiness kind (oxymoronic at best).

So, yeah, speechless. For a rucker to be subbed off really early, only to be subbed back on and play my part and ultimately win this medallion... It feels nice I guess. Of course I should give many thanks to many people that have gotten my to this point. From the Wonders brigade who nurtured my abilities, to the Gumbies brigade who sculptured my form to perfection, I'd just like to thank you all for supporting my career.

This medal isn't just for me, it's for all of us to celebrate and cherish. What a season, what a final series, what a journey, and what a bloody fantastic win. Viva La Gumbies people, VIVA LA GUMBIES!

Honestly though, as skip of the Furies, well done Gumbies. If I was to choose a team we had to go down to it would be you guys every day of the week.

Congratulations to BoshtrichBurger. You must be the Furies' kryptonite. Without knowing the stats I'm not sure if the Furies have ever eaten you. Probably the greatest trade win in SFA history and this is the legacy moment that tops it all off. Well done.

To my own boys. Thanks for another great turnout. We've been challenged a lot this year but we showed the completion great resiliency and was able to make another great final and get so bloody close. It's depressing that we couldn't get the job done this time either, but I'll tell you what, every other club is insanely jealous of how spoilt we are with all these Grand Final appearances. We've got to just start making the most of them. We'll be back. Until Season 17...Adios.

You haven't eaten me, but you have beaten me before. :)

Good game though, you were clutch. Just not clutch enough ;)
