The other man at the centre of the Joel Selwood ‘chicken wing’ tackle controversy has spoken out saying he believes the action has been ‘blown out of proportion’.

Sam Wright was on the receiving end of the Geelong captain’s questionable arm hold and despite remonstrating with the umpire on the night about the act, he told NMFC.com.au Selwood should be cleared.

“At the time I was probably pretty fired up,” Wright said.

“Looking back over the vision over the last few days, I think it’s been blown out of proportion to tell you the truth.”

Wright said the fact Selwood was looking directly at the umpire during the tackle suggests it wasn’t malicious.

“He was looking at the umpire the whole time.

“I knew I didn’t have the ball so I thought it was a bit iffy in that sense but looking back, he still thought I had the ball obviously and was surprised when J-Mac (Jamie Macmillan) came in and that sort of says to me that he thought I still had the ball and thought he was a legitimate chance to try and ping me.”

Wright admitted to being uncomfortable at the bottom of the back with his arm held, but pointed to a dodgy shoulder rather than Selwood’s tackle as the main cause.

“I’ve had two shoulder reconstructions, if it was the other side, it’s perfect,” Wright said.

“My shoulder doesn’t allow me to go past a certain point so that was the issue I had.

“At the time it was uncomfortable but it always is in situations like that, you know you’ve got blokes on top of you and as I said, looking back at the vision he’s just trying to get me holding the ball I think.”

Wright said when his teammate shoved Selwood in an attempt to free him, it didn’t have the desired result.

“With J-Mac coming in probably made it a bit worse but yeah, not too much in it.”

Some have likened the incident to Chris Judd’s tackle on Leigh Adams in 2012 but Wright believes they’re very different.

“Remembering back I think he (Judd) came third man in for the tackle whereas Joel was obviously tackling me there when I had the ball so it’s a lot different.”

Judd received a four-week ban and Selwood is expected to be sent straight to the tribunal when the Match Review Panel releases its findings on Monday.

North coach Brad Scott agreed with Wright’s assessment.

“I’ve heard comparisons to Chris Judd, I think that’s ridiculous,” Scott told SEN.

“I don’t think it was anything like that. I think he pinned the arm and he held it.

“People will form their own opinions, and try to make assumptions about what Joel was thinking, which I think’s unfair.”

On the evidence available, I don’t think anyone likes the look of a player having his arm pinned and pulled behind his back, but I don’t think that was Joel’s intention and Sam Wright certainly didn’t think it was his intention, either.”

Who are Geelong's next two opponents?

Hmmm… The Bulldogs and the Giants.

Probably no coincidence at all those teams are occupying spots in the top 8 ahead of North.

Aren't there rules in place which are supposed to gag players and coaches from commenting on MRP & tribunal matters?

Fremantle 12-2, 125.5
West Coast 11-3, 156.5
Sydney 11-3, 130.5
Hawthorn 10-4, 153.8
Richmond 9-5, 112.0
Bulldogs 9-5, 106.9
Collingwood 8-6, 122.0
GWS Giants 8-6, 103.1
---------------------------
Adelaide 7-6, 103.2
North Melb 7-7, 95.8
Geelong 6-7, 95.2
Port Adelaide 6-8, 97.5
St Kilda 5-9, 88.2
Essendon 5-9, 79.4

But totally nothing in it right?

Btw I don't want selwood to get weeks. Play on.

This is bullshit, and is the reason NO COACH OR PLAYER should intervene in the process of the tribunal. During the game Sam Wright clearly told the umpire about the incident and was not happy. You can later see him clutching at his arm. Selwood is clearly pulling his arm upwards at the conclusion of the tackle. Its a dirty act, and Brad Scott should shut the * up and let the tribunal follow its course.

That's fine, we aren't in the business of false hopes like the Roos.
Whatcha reckon Roos will achieve this year? A flag :))
So happy with the loss on Saturday night because, let me understand you..... You don't want to harbour false hope???? Wow that is priceless!!!

Dunno where we will finish, but as always will remain optimistic. Last year when we lost to Brisbane no one would have given us a chance to make a prelim.

Brad Scott and the NMFC have plenty of form when it comes to speaking out of school over MRP incidents. When Brian Lake / Drew Petrie had their dust up last year, the Kangas were all over the media gobbing off about who did what to whom, trying to protect Petrie from a possible eye-gouging charge.

I don't really blame them however. It's up to the AFL to rule with an iron fist and keep the clubs in line with this sort of stuff, but they've become very weak over the past 10 years with Adrian Anderson, followed by Mark Evans running the football operations.

Ian Collins was a rotten piece of s**t, but I preferred his style in the 90's of heavily fining anyone who criticised the umps & tribunal, or tried to influence their decisions. It was a good rule which prevented all the gamesmanship and wheeling & dealing which we see nowadays. Clubs and players simply had to STFU.

Wright later stated: "it actually felt terrific, I was laying down and I said to Joel 'I'm cramping in my shoulder', Joel carefully performed a stretching motion on the said shoulder, I thanked him, we shook hands, and he decamped in a north-westerly direction....."

No there isn't anything in it, swallow tackled pinning the arms, plenty of players grimace like that when heavily tackled, with grabbing the wrists so that walker couldn't dispose of it properly. As soon as he realized he brought walkers arm around his back mere moments of walker dropping the ball, he ceased immediately. Duration and force are different.

Now I find it funny how some posters believe that selwood is innocent and swallow should lose his head for murdering someone, it's a bit much.
