Selwood named Cats Captain

Overrated hack who's been lucky to have 3 premiership medals. Will be shown up by Hawks superstars this year now that Ling has retired.

One on the Cats board already.

I'm happy with the decision, no surprises.

I would have loved Jimmy as captain too, but he's VC for now??

Will he take over when Joel retires?!

Agree with being happy about the decision. Not at all surprised and am content that the club remains in good hands.

Selwood and Jimmy - very good choices.

Very happy for Selwood, he is an absolute star and deserves every accolade.

Insecure much.........

No surprise, good choice - either he or bartel would of been a good fit but selwood probably has the edge in terms of being able to direct on field and that is meant with no disrespect to Bartel.

Others in the leadership group are Kelly, Corey, Taylor, Johnson and Enright.

No Scarlett or Chappy.... :/

Congrats on the choice. The safe bet would always go to the more experienced performer, but that doesnt always lead to the best person for the role.

Geelong have done the right thing and gone for the braver choice.

Congratulation to the young bloke.:thumbsu:

The changing of the guard continues.

Had a fair time of it since being drafted.

Expect a pretty smooth transition but I expect his real work will start in about 2 or 3 years. Will be interesting to see how he goes, he’s never played in a side that was even mildly unsuccessful – 3 flags, a runners-up and a prelim. Most captains appointed young seem to grow with the team and lead them up the ladder… all things being equal Selwood will probably be doing the opposite. You’d think he’d still be around for their next successful period though so could be a bit of a link between eras and perhaps that’s what they’re looking for.

They're still a premiership threat for a year or two...

According to Scott Gullan in "Greatness: Inside Geelong's Path to Premiership History", Scarlett chooses not to be available for the leadership group.

and according to Chris Scott on the last "On the Couch" post the 2011 GF Scarlett, while not wanting an official role in the leadership group, is one of the best leaders in the club.

Scarlett and Chapman and everyone else contributes a great deal of leadership and don't need to be in the Leadership group to do so. Any Geelong supporter who doesn't get this needs to keep their rather childish view of the world to themselves.
