Well my sources (happy with my source) say that early to mid last year we were speaking with Carlise, a large offer was made yet rejected at the time by Carlise/Management. Later the club made a play for Patton who was weighing it up. Knee put an end to that. Yes Im sure they were following Boyd as well, as we follow lots of players and many other clubs would have been following Boyd as well. Yet the Griffen incident pulled the trigger, good luck to Boyd. Like I said I'm really happy with the trade and I'm happy the way we responded yet unlikely the trade would have happened if Griffent didn't leave. We had not even made contact with he manager were as we had with the other two.

I specifically said the Griffen situation brought the trade forward a year. But we were into Boyd all of 2014 with a view to trading him in 2016. Boyd was always the main target we even had a scout at every one of his matches.

I understand those who are nervous or critical of the move - especially when time is the only factor that can allow us to judge.

The one thing you need to keep in the back of your mind id us bringing in some quality from other clubs.
The hawks didnt draft half their back line. They traded them in.

We have been massive Steven May fans as an example and chased Lobbe. Nothing to say we cannot bring in one at the end of the year if this years draft doesnt bring something up.

Until then we can really only wait and judge the 11 for 20/21 move in a few years time.

With the way the draft went I think the Dogs were vindicated with what they did. I admit that I was worried but they got Collins anyway and managed to get Dunkley and Adams when they would have otherwise had to miss one of them if they hadn't dropped down the draft order. If they stayed at 11, they may have picked Collins anyway so in the end it was a great move if he was the key defender they were targeting.

There's nothing new or surprising about what Monty said. We've known Boyd bulked up too much at GWS and has needed to work on his fitness since we got him. Nothing wrong with speaking publically about where a player is at. We need more communication like this from the club not less. Endless media conferences where people talk but never say anything don't help supporters share the journey with the club

Good Point Dannnnnnnnnn, Brisbane really is the club to load up on for talls. Much has been made of their lack of talls but really its not a lack of numbers but now just a lack of experience.

McStay/Close/Freeman - we should be looking at one of them next offseason. McStay obviously being the most expensive option. I'm guessing Merrett will also have another 2 seasons in him and will provide experience. That should keep out another highly ranked kid for the time being.

Mids. Lots of really great mids. Possibly 5 better than any of this years crop, according to a few recruiters and draft watches. Much deeper in midfielders too and no KPF that look like top 10 picks.

Split that list into their likely positions:
Tall defenders - Clarke, Hipwood, Skinner, Andrews
Medium defenders - Paparone, Gardiner (probably plays more tall though)
Tall forwards - Freeman, Close, Walker, Schache, McStay, Hammelmann (rookie)
Ruck - Smith (rookie)

Of the above, the ones out of contract in 2016 (though we know how little those are worth these days) are Paparone, Gardiner, Clarke, Smith (r) and Hammelmann (r). Of the contracted players, I suspect Close would be the gettable one at this point I think, coming off an ACL last year.

I haven't seen a huge amount of any of them and I'm still trying to get my head around what our preferred future forward setup is. I still don't know whether I want another key forward alongside Boyd or I'm happy with Stringer partnering him; whether I want Boyd high up the ground or deep; whether I want Boyd relief rucking or not, etc. So at this point I'm not totally committed to a "type" of player. Close has some talent but I wonder whether he'd partner Boyd well or be too much of the same. I quite like a lot of the players on the list in terms of talent/upside though.

Of course, no idea whether any of these guys would even entertain the idea of leaving - every chance they're very happy. Just think that given KPPs are always hot commodities and they're unlikely to be able to play them all, one or two of them might be gettable in the next couple of years if opportunity appears likelier elsewhere.
