Unrestricted Free Agent Tyson Stengle [UFA 2024]

It would be unfortunate for Geelong to lose Stengle on a large unrestricted free agent deal in a year when they are looking to top up with free agents.

I would expect his contract at the Cats these last years has factored in the risk and opportunity Geelong wore, so it's been repaid with performance.

Unfortunately for Tyson, small forward is a position that looks the best with strong key forwards and if Hawkins has a down year it might hobble his output for 2024.

I think he'll still benefit from having Cameron and Henry even if Hawkins doesn't play a game

Agree. Stengle is a specialist crumber which is a bit of a dying trait amongst small forwards of the modern game, his ability to find loose ball at the feet of Hawkins and Cameron in 2022 was incredible.

I'm biased of course but can't think of many players who'd fit a need better than Stengle at Carlton if the Cats aren't back up the pointy end this year.

We'd have the cash for a player like him to round out our list and he would walk into the forward line and likely be our 2nd or 3rd highest goal kicker year 1 at the feet of Curnow and McKay.

That is true because i expect we will be hitting the FA market hard this year which would cancel any compo.

That said with his history i doubt any club is offering him huge money without huge out clauses in which case if its incentive based the contract tiering would have put the compo quite low anyway.

I agree that clubs will offer terms with incentives to protect them, but if there are two or three teams around the same value trying to climb over the top of the other to guarantee Stengle's signature one of them will put guaranteed money on the table.

It's a good time to be an unrestricted free agent. A shame Collingwood didn't come for Stengle in the most recent trade period.

Agree. Would be a perfect fit at Carlton and would kick a lot of goals.

The hawks found out all clubs need to rebuild.

I think now that Selwood and Smith are gone, Hawkins is slowing down, Danger is the wrong side of the 30 I don't see them getting enough A grade talent to challenge for a flag.

Breust wont play forever as well so I assume we are chatting to him.

Then why would he leave, we offered him a long term deal, he agreed to a short deal to try to increase his value.

He will get offered more than last time but no club is going to offer him more than 4 years or a huge amount of money per year unless its incentive based (bc of his off field history). Which means unless they change the compo formula (as incentives dont currently count for banding only base wage) hes not getting near band 1. For eg if some club offers him 3-4 years at 600pa (which we could match but probably wouldnt) we will get band 3 at best.

Ftr i think he will stay but if he goes we wont get band 1.

Our list profile means we'll have no shortage of cap space. We'd match anything less than band 1

Can’t match an UFA.
Poor phrasing on my part. 12 months ago our contract offer would have been at band 2 level. Logically to entice him to leave a clubs offer would have to be better than our even without the formal mechanism to match.

He and his manager were probably hoping his 2023 would have gone better and that remains true for this year as well.

We cant match hes UFA.

If you mean we would offer him the same $ to stay sure we might match say 4yrs at 650 each if we want him that much, but he could just go to the other club anyway and we cant do anything.

I suspect he stays if he thinks we are still in a window and if not he goes to a club he thinks is in it.

I do not know him well enough to judge his motivation but he seemed a lot happier in year 1 than in year 2. Im not convinced it will be about a window or even getting the best contract.

That was my thought. Who would give Stengle Band1 money.
North with that Warchest we've been hearing about for a decade?

I can see Freo offering him a truckload too.

If it was the Blues picking him up I'd think 600k would be thereabouts for a player like him 700 max

If he's looking for a side that needs a small forward, has its window open, and is literally walking distance from where he grew up, then I don't think he could go past Port Adelaide.

Thats possible although i think its better for tyson if he doesnt go back to SA..in terms of off field influences i doubt its the best place for him (nothing against port or the crows either).

Yeah potentially. It's a shame for him because Port is a clear second best choice for him.

... second best

... and Kenny/Port do seem to like players who have been in our system. Not a bad suggestion.

For us if he stays and become a long term player...great. If he goes elsewhere ..good luck to him ,he will always be an important part of 22. We get a Band2/Band3 and move on ... and players like Managh and Dempsey..if not others will attempt to make his position their own.

You might be 100% correct but it was in SA that he found a way back into the system. I feel its really up to him..if a players wants to find distraction they probably can do it anywhere.

If he were to ask Eddie ..I wonder if he would say Carlton were a good option. On the way up and probably could do with a player of his goal kicking type... to sit at the feet of CC and McK. If he could have another 22 season with them ..who knows he might be the difference ina big game.

I hope he stays and develop his midfield skills. He has shown talent and Geelong have a need. Being a FA will mean someone will look at him, epsecially sides like Port and Blues who just want the icing.
