Preview:
Round one of the 2014 VFL season is upon us and with two games played last weekend, the second half of the first round will be kicked off with two bayside teams. Frankston and Sandringham will battle it out in what is dubbed the “Battle of the Bay”.
Both sides missed out on the finals last year and battled for ladder positions against each other in the final game of the year. The Zebras were eventual winners however the match almost boiled over at half-time when a scuffle between the two teams occurred.
The Zebras started quickly and had a 31-point lead at quarter time and won by a gritting 15 points. But August 2013 was a long time ago and a lot has changed.
Sandringham has lost several key players including captain Marcus Marigliani (Port Melbourne), Chris Michaliades (Port Melbourne) and Hamish Shepheard. They have been boosted with additions such as Piers Flanagan (Geelong), William McTaggart (Port Melbourne), Dalton Graham (Box Hill) and signed Sandringham Dragon James Munro.
Frankston lost Sam Lloyd to AFL team Richmond and Lachlan Delahunty to Western Australia. They gained Jordan Pollard (Casey Scorpions), Wade Lees (Casey Scorpions) and Josh Tynan (Melbourne).
The two teams met in the preseason with Frankston running out 33-point winners at Frankston Oval in blustery conditions. Zebras assistant coach Brendan Allen had this to say about the loss.
“We obviously had a slow start against a Frankston team who had already played two games and were match hardened, where we were playing as a team for the first time for the year, “Allen told True Zebras.
