2nds West Coast Eagles WAFL Watch 2024

Kyal Horsley just said on SEN that Jackson Nelson played through a knee injury in the closing rounds of last year and held off an operation to do so

He had that operation after the season without saying what the specific problem was and said he’s about 4-6 weeks away from returning

In the end, do you eveen need to be in the "bests" from the WAFL to be made the sub?

Hall might get the nod purely for the fact he was a pre season standout and he's strung together a couple practice games now.

Seems a good way to blood youth and get them used to the pace of AFL level without completely throwing them in the deep end. Worked well for Chesser somewhat.

Horsley talked about how they’re trying to replicate the same game style in the WAFL side as the AFL side and that the top up players have been working hard to learn the system

Provided we can maintain a reasonable level of availability (should aim for 10+ listed players each week) then the WAFL side stands a chance of being relied upon for players to develop

It then doesn’t become the worst place for developing first and second year players to learn without rushing them into the seniors too early

And also for senior players coming off long injury layoffs to build match fitness

Re Clay Hall, Horsley indicated he was still on managed minutes so suspect he’ll be in the WAFL for another week at least

Turning the ball over in the middle of the ground then getting torched the other way and getting picked apart in transition from oppo kick ins?

Goss was talking like West Coast WAFL would win the flag this year if we keep our injury list to 4-5. Think he might have genuinely lost the plot. Or he knows something I don't!
Guess it depends on how fit our Afl list stays. If we were able to make finals and have a full complement of players to pick from it would be a decent side. It’s 14 listed players max?

Plus Nelson, Gillbee and Ruscoe who are all quality at WAFL level. There are others on our WAFL list that have WAFL experience too.

Im hoping to see Burgiel as he was so highly touted and his last year was ruined - and he is playing well

Seems unlikely we'll give finals a nudge, but definitely not a flag. Gaff to win the Sandover was his other call, so expecting him to play WAFL all year I guess.

Webster who coaches the backs said he's had a great off season, one hiccup with a small hammy but otherwise walked into the club in really good nick after the off season. Then said if he plays better he might get a look in late in the season 🤣

If Gaff stays at WAFL level I’d expect him to be a prominent player. A midfield including Gaff, Sheed, Culley, Hall, Trew, Johnston and Gillbee will match any WAFL midfield.

It comes down to availability due to injuries in the senior side. Goss is correct that we will be very competitive if the list stays relatively healthy.

Can't see Sheed playing in the WAFL for more than a few games tbh

Did I hear the club is staying East for this and gather round? Are they going to travel with more players and leave the wafl team without hope again?

⬇️
Doubt they take the full squad. I reckon they’ll take the usual 24/25 to start with, maybe a few guys will go over and join them Sunday/Monday after playing Swan Districts, then once teams are picked on the Thursday some might get flown back in time to play Souths.

Nine AFL-listed players named in the side to play Swans - Rotham, Witherden, Livingstone, Hall, Trew, H.Edwards, Rawlinson, Dewar, Baker.

We’ll have to wait and see who flies over tomorrow, possibly one or two emergencies to join them. A pretty strong side for round 1 regardless.

Simpson indicated on 6PR we’re only intending to take one traveller so there should be two emergencies suiting up for the Beagles

Gives us 11 listed players plus Ruscoe and Gilbee

With Gaff and Barnett confirmed as playing WAFL our side for Swans looks like this

FB: Witherden Edwards xxx
HB: Baker Rotham Ruscoe
C : Gilbee Gaff xxx
HF: Dewar xxx xxx
FF: Rawlinson Livingstone xxx
R : Barnett Hall Trew
INT: 4x xxx

Hopefully they can give a good account of themselves. It’s certainly a better looking team than we were able to put on the park last year
