Will there ever be a draft as good as 2001

2001 has definitely earned the right to be considered the best ever. But I reckon 2008 is a decent chance to be spoken about in the same vein (not suggesting it will be better) but at least good enough to be comparable. Have a feeling though that the 2001 midfielders will be superior (can't imagine better top end midfielders than this draft) and the 2008 talls might be a little better, but its still so early that the initial assessment could be way off. Certainly no other year after 2001 has come close.

2008 would be the closest out of other years. Still 2001 is better.

Have a look at the rookie list from 2008! (btw -Hawks and Freo did very nicely from this rookie draft!)

I reckon a 2001 Draft best 22 would defeat a rest of the competition combined 22 it is that good. Except keyforward stakes may be a bit weak, the defense is strong, the midfield is unbelievable

In fact, with Sandilands they would smash them

Would love to know who the Swans would have considered taking from the draft. We traded off picks 14 and 17 to get Barry Hall who in hindsight was easily worth every bit as a Judd, Hodge, Ball to us who were taken with the first 3 picks.

Greatest single goal ever kicked in a grand final :D, i actually had totally forgot about him..what happened to his career after the 06 premiership?
I'm guessing that when West Coast bottomed out they wanted to make space for some young talent.

2001 draft team
B: Rutten Lake Brown
HB: Hodge Bock Carazzo
C: Bartel Swan Dal Santo
HF: Ball Lynch Ablett
F: Johnson Waite Schneider
R: Sandilands Mitchell Judd

Int/Other: Kelly, Montagna, Boyd, Hale, Jamar, Seaby, Reilly, Ladson, Gram, Maguire, Thornton, Mattner, Rodan, Roberts-Thompson, Medhurst... plus plenty of others who had reasonable careers. Underlined are All Australians.

Seriously doubt we'll ever see that much quality out of one draft again. Midfield depth is just ridiculous and backline isn't far behind

A 2008 comparison:

B: Suckling, Davis, Yarran
HB: Watts, Keefe, Shiels
C: Sloane, Hannebery, Shuey
HF: Zaharakis, Hurley, Hill
F: Bruest Jurrah Ballantyne
R: Naitanui, Beams, Rich
Int/ Others: Shoenmakers, Broughton, Banfield, Garlett, De Boer, McKenzie, Jurrah, Picken, Savage, Vickery, Hartlett, Ziebull, Rockliff, Robinson, Trengove, Redden, sidebottom

Underlined are Round 8-10 2012 equal intercept mark leaders

2008 has the better spread of talent. Was funnily considered to be a not so strong draft at the time from memory.

The 97 draft was fairly good - every one of the top 10 played 130+ games, (7 of the 10 played 200+) so no duds, but lacks the absolute stars. Best players were outside the Top 10, however - Black, Goodes, Scarlett.
A quick look reveals 3 Brownlows, Premiership captain (VanDenBurg) and the usual good handful of premiership players.

Not really - he turned out to be quite erratic and not that good in the end.

Delisted at the grand old age of 24. Despite being used up forward, never averaged more than a goal a game, and never averaged more than 16 touches in a year either.

Rutten Bock and Mattner were all rookies. One we kept, one we gave away and one was stolen. Our club has done pretty well really wihtout bottoming out, having some bad luck with top ten picsks, and being pillaged by the Suns and the Giants.
