Universal Love Willem "big willy style" Drew

WILLEM Drew is the forgotten man of Port Adelaide's feted midfield - and he wouldn't have it any other way. There's the brilliant young crop of Zak Butters, Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis, Brownlow medallist Ollie Wines and Port's games record-holder and dual club champion Travis Boak. Then, there's Drew.

The unsung 70-gamer is often deployed in tagging roles on the opposition's most dangerous midfielder while rarely attracting attention. "It doesn't bother me too much at all," Drew told reporters on Tuesday. "Happy just to go about my business and do whatever is needed for the team. "Obviously we have got some really special players in our team who are playing really good footy so I am happy just to do my bit. "I'm a pretty low-key sort of bloke."

The 24-year-old was recruited from North Ballarat with pick 33 at the 2016 national draft. And since his AFL debut in 2019, Drew has become a mainstay of the Power line-up, playing every game since 2021, largely as a tagger. "Mostly it happens on game day," Drew said of his shutdown role.

"If another mid gets on top of the game and (coach Ken Hinkley) Kenny thinks it's probably worth going to them. "During the week you always know who you're coming up against and know the players that are probably going to have the biggest impact. "So it's always a great challenge and one I am happy to do.

The unheralded Drew has been among Port's most consistent players in the South Australian club's longest AFL winning streak - 11 consecutive victories heading into Saturday night's clash against Essendon. Seven of those wins have been by 22 points or less in a streak which has lifted the Power to second spot on the ladder, behind leader Collingwood only by percentage. "You take away the wins and it has probably just been the way that we've been able to play and the way they've been able to win," Drew said. "Playing in different conditions, we have been up some weeks, we've been down some weeks and been able to fight back. "We have taken a lot of confidence out of that and we're going to keep building on that. "We still want to improve, we've definitely got a lot of things to work on and we're going to do that in the back half of the year."

Laying the foundation

Definitely seems like the type of player whose impact would be more felt if he didnt play. He clearly plays a defensive role at stoppage allowing the other 3 to be offensive and do what they do best. Ideally he would be able to increase his disposals but again that isnt his main role or what he should be judged on, but occasionally it feels he can go a whole qtr without touching the pill, or getting less than 10 touches for the game.

So much of what he does isnt rewarded with a stat, a disposal, or a sexy goal. One of our most important players IMO.

Every premiership team needs a lockdown midfielder. Underrated role imo. Only have to look at Kane's shut-down role on Black in 2004. Was crucial to our flag success. On his day, when his disposal is quality, he is way more than that.

The coaches have used defensive play to our advantage this year.

Drew has been epic in some games especially against Bont in our first Bulldogs game.

He has been bobbing up forward as well and he does a huge amount of things that don't get on the stat sheet for the good of the team.

He is a shutdown specialist and is always going hard, first minute of the first quarter, last minute of the last quarter.

I think he still has room to improve offensively too.

Played a massive game. Wish he had kicked one of his shots on goal, deserved some reward not just for his defensive game but his offensive work to make Daicos accountable.

Devo for the lad, should of kick at least one to seal off his game. Quietly goes about it with hardly any recognition from outside. Had he score one or both, he would have got the recognition in the media he deserves.

Wet conditions suit him to, hopefully makes up for it in the spring

How ridiculously good is he. Our best player in the finals last year and maybe his best game today.

and all while swapping between inside and outside roles each week.
Absolutely. I thought he was epic today. His first 4-5 kicks all ended up in marks in our inside 50 or shots on goal. Then he nails his own. Such a mature footballer.

He played really well today but the start of the 4th quarter in particular when the game was there to be won, he stood up and took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Very impressive. Already kicked 3 goals and if he turns that into a regular thing it will make this side only more potent offensively.

****ing love him. Has had an elite start to 2024.

Not only doing the grunt work that often gets unrecognised by everyone who doesn't follow PA, but is now really getting involved in link up as an outside mid, as well as hitting the scoreboard.

Will most likely live his career in the shadow of Buttsy, Rose and JHF, which is a bit of a shame. So, so, so important to the make up of this midfield and in part, is a reason why the aforementioned 3 are able to shine the way they do.

Never forget that he debuted on the same day as Butters and Rozee (and Duursma). Each game he plays it just adds another layer to how important the blokes that really began their journeys on that day would become for us.
