I wouldn't go as far as to say that gimme shelter was their best song, it is a favourite of mine but their best hmm thats a tough one
I'm suprised how many haven't been listed, no mention of under my thumb, wild horses,angie,sweet black angel, she's so cold.......
Hmmm actually on second thoughts the list could go on for ever and a day couldn't it, I agree with the sentiments of another poster mind slips me who said right now but it was something along the lines of alot of artists today would kill to have the recording repertoire of the stones and I dare say most would chew off their usable limbs for just a portion of the success they had.
Just as a point of interest, am interested to know the thoughts of other posters what it is about their fav stones songs listed that appeals to them more than the others.

I'll get the ball rolling (no pun intended) for memory when sweet black angel was released it was the first time they had sort of experimented with a different genre and included more of a alternative/country feel to it and is also a quite cleverly disguised political protest..... well maybe not protest but you see what I'm getting at.

Would love to know other posters thoughts on this topic

 

[GAS PANIC]

With it's only rock n roll the way jagger delivers the lyrics is what makes it stand out to me. The chorus also draws you in and before you know it you are singing along. The music video which is on youtube with a live recording and and jagger prancing around in a sailor suit while there tent fills with bubbles is also good.

Lady Jane is definantly the simplicity of the song with the additon of Brian Jones experimenting with the dulclimer leaving a haunting precence to the song.

You mean it was released as a single? I never knew that. It's about my least favourite track on Exile.

Can't You hear Me Knocking. Great rock intro. Loved Mick Taylor's solo, and loved the way it builds up with taylor's solo and Bobby Keyes' sax. If there's ever a song built to f*** to, this is it.

Was also used to great effect on Johnny Depp's Blow. Just summed up the whole 70s drug thing.
