If the 2006 draft was to be redone again, who would the top 10 picks picks be in order?

i am not going to put a poll in, because i want it to be a more open discussion rather than choosing from a limited selection.

but for the sake of having a poll because it is the polls board, i will include a question to vote for or against.

It's still a bit early I reckon, because the likes of Gumbleton and a few others still haven't managed to string enough games together. However, based on what we've seen, and taking a little prophetic license with some of the others we have only seen glimpses from, I'd say it would go something like this:

1. Selwood
2. Gibbs
3. Boak
4. Brown
5. Luenberger
6. Gumbleton
7. Hansen
8. Tippett
9. Everrit
10. Garland

Note to Kangas and Bombers fans: don't be upset, I'm sure Hansen and Gumbleton will show us in due course that they are deserved top 5 selections... they just haven't done so yet.

Struggling a bit from 8 - 10... does anyone have any better suggestions?

On performance Gumby shouldn't be in the top ten...however fingers crossed he can string games in '09 - really looking forward to watching him play.

My Bomber colours are going to show here but I reckon Kyle Reimers would be top 15

Gav Urquhart also deserves a mention

i would say that either mitch brown or eric mackenzie from the eagles may be worthy top 10 picks. not on performance to date but from the limited games they have shown potential to be top 10 from the 06 draft.

both were originally touted to be first round selections. brown more so than mackenzie. really depends how he comes back from the knee

If the AFL did the 06 draft again they would of realised that whatever they did would be useless to Carlton, and would of letten Adelaide get Gibbs under the father son rule

Would of been the same in 05 with the AFL allowing Murphy to be taken by Brisbane.

Umm, if Murph had of wanted to go there under F/S he would be there. Father/Son is a choice thing, he didnt want to leave Melbourne.

As much fun as it would be to discuss in detail your primary school education (honestly "letten"??), lets concentrate on the fact that Murphy actually had the choice to go to Brisbane.

I'd put Reimers in the top ten.

I think Selwood would probably go number 1 is that draft if revisited. Gibbs might still turn out to be better but I seriously doubt it. Will have to wait and see what Boak, Hansen and Gumbleton are capable of before we decide whether Gibbs should go 2,3,4 or 5. I can't see any others from that draft surpassing him though.

If I had to reorder the top 10 selections based on what they have so far shown i would do it in this order.

7. Joel Selwood
1. Bryce Gibbs
5. Travis Boak
10. Nathan Brown
4. Matthew Leuenberger
3. Lachlan Hansen
9. David Armitage
8. Ben Reid
2. Scott Gumbleton
6. Mitchell Thorp

However if I was to take potential into account as well:
7. Joel Selwood
1. Bryce Gibbs
4. Matthew Leuenberger
5. Travis Boak
2. Scott Gumbleton
3. Lachlan Hansen
10. Nathan Brown
6. Mitchell Thorp
9. David Armitage
8. Ben Reid

As you can see, Leuey and Gumby both move up significantly. In my opinion there is a large void between 7th and 8th in the bottom list, though Thorp struggles for opportunities in a forward line so dominated by Franklin and Roughead. There isn't alot in between Selwood and Gibbs in terms of potential, either.

I hate Carlton even more then the next guy but Gibbs is a freak, i know i would take him over Selwood if i had the chance. Gibbs is only 19 and blossoming into his role, while Selwood was a ready made midfielder.

Dont assume just because Selwood is already a very very good player, that he will not get any better. Reality is that selwood is propably going to turn into one of the all time greats of the game.

Gibbs.. average footballer so far showing signs of being a very good player, Selwood so far, a very very good player showing signs of being a champion.

Just because a young player is a gun, does not mean he will not get any better.

This philosophy that because Selwood is so good now, therefor he will not get any better is plain stupidity

I'd say it would go something like this:

1. Selwood
2. Gibbs
3. Boak
4. Brown
5. Luenberger
6. Gumbleton
7. Hansen
8. Tippett
9. Everrit
10. Garland
You do sort of mention it, but I'll point it out anyway, talls take longer. The three who have done the most so far are the three highly rated midfielders, that's hardly a surprise, but they've only played 2 years.

At the end of Jarryd Roughead's 2nd season where would he have ranked in the 2004 draft? But in his 4th he kicked 70 odd goals.

If you redid the draft today, clubs would still be willing to take the bet on a Luenberger or a Gumbleton in the top few. (Although it's tough to see Selwood getting past the first pick).

No he wouldn't.

He would easily be in the Top 10.

A RS Nomination in his 2nd game of AFL, a 18 disposal & 2 goal performance on a Brownlow winner. He also received votes in the award at the end of the year (despite only playing in the 2nd half).

Has played 5 finals to date (for 3 wins) & has managed to get over 20 disposals in 3 of those. He had a bigger influence on the 2007 PF than Joel Selwood. Not many players from the same draft have records that match Marty's efforts.

Because we all know that a players career is judged on when he recieved a rising star nom??

Clarke wouldn't be in the top ten. Open your biased eyes.

Not the least, Marty played on Amon Buchanen, Shane Crawford & Robert Harvey in his first 3 games & was largely hailed by coaches & commentators as one of the best adaption to AFL football.

Stats, record in finals, ability say otherwise. If Kevin Sheedy & Matthew Knights both labelled Marty as the success of that draft, it is good enough for me.

Name for me how many players in that draft have 1 week collected 20 disposals plus in a finals win & then the next week completely shut out a player who kicked 3 first quarter goals & then gone on to collect 20 plus in a PF.

You can't.

What is your obsession with finals? 50 percent of players are already excluded because you arbitrarily make finals a criteria.

How many players with two D's in their first name got 32 possessions on debut... OMFG DALZIELL IS THE BEST PLAYER EVER!

Stop forming your opinions from Collingwood TV.

If the 2006 draft was done again, Clarke would not be in the top 10. You are delusional to state otherwise, let alone say he would make it "easily".

Gibbs, Gumbleton, Hansen, Leuenberger, Boak, Selwood, N. Brown, Everitt, Riewoldt, Frawley, Hampson, Jetta and Grigg would all be ahead of him, and I haven't even gone beyond the top 20 yet.
