Western Digital TV High Definition Media Player

It's a known problem that the remote isn't very responsive and you have to basically point it in a line-of-sight trajectory. However, I took the media player away with me on holidays over Easter and had to connect it up via component, the remote was way more responsive than it was when I was using it at home via HDMI. Could just be a coinky-dinky?

ah ok, i only have a 'line-of-sight trajectory' just because where its setup, so maybe thats why its not a issue for me. I've only used HDMI so cant really comment on the comparison.

Sorry should have been a bit more clear. The same way you attach info to music files (album art, artist etc.)

Got it sorted though, all you do is have a jpeg with the same name of the video file in the same folder.

Leaves things a bit cluttered though if you have a serious amount of videos in the same folder.

i have only been able to get some of the music working and its only when the album art for a particular song or album.

for videos i have done this and it doesnt work although some downloaded with dvd art.

hopefully firmware updates will help,

I tagged and added art with I-tunes, and album art is working ok for me, maybe give that a go?

nah thats fine mick, was just saying from reading the whirlppol thread apparently there are more expensive systems (popcorn or something?) with network connections and things like that for people really interested. This was aimed at the simple and cheaper end of the market i think.

They are a bit more expensive but have the ability to download torrents directly to it, can play files off removable media and has capacity to store a fixed HDD.

One of my colleagues has one of these and can't speak more highly of it.

Just got myself one of these bad boys, love it so far..Seems to play any media format I have on my computer. I found the $200 quite reasonable considering how much use I'll get out of it (60gig downloads per month keeps me busy) and the fact my tv doesn't have a usb port. Though I have heard that even the new tv's with USB port are quite tempremental.

Annoying placement of the usb port, surely they could have found a bit better place than right next to the power at the back.

Can't you use the one on the side?

I use a portable 1TB drive I bought connected at the back, and use USB sticks with the port on the side.

Will admit it's pretty cramped at the back though.

have people who purchased this registered it as the second firmware update is now availabe, one tip i advise when updating firmware use only a usb stick and unplug all other hard drives from the unit.

no probs it was hard to find, but its good as it keeps track of days left on all your wd products.

as a reseller we recommend contacting wd for repairs as they will handle everything including data recovery if possible on hard drives

picked one up today at JB for only $150 it was a return all un-opened just they bought the wrong thing so returned it within 24 hour.

I have around 3TBs of music, movies, TV shows & photos so this thing will come in handy plus I'll be able to take it to my GF's place and hook it up there. liking it very much so far.

I've been using one quite a bit lately, at first i was a little disappointed with the picture quality (watching some FULL dvd rips that may as well have been 350mb quality avi files ). After downgrading the resolution, the picture played much more normally as it should .

My only gripe with it is when it comes to converting tv show dvds - unless they come with a "play all" feature and all episodes play back in movie form (2hrs 40 minutes with no title breaks etc)... chucking individual episodes into one main .vob or .iso does not work (it plays the first episode, but not the next couple).

I've read that the only solution is to encode and name them individually, doable - but time consuming AND will clog up the hdd with more titles than i want to have.

Just have to work out if it is Windows 7 server compatible. If not I'll cancel the order and get something else.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best under $100 Win 7 compatible player around the place? Wireless N a must.

This might be a tricky question.

but ive been using my ps3 as a media player lately and have been using my external hard drive to play my files.

But is there any difference to that and my PS3? As it seems that has HDMI output or is that just to connect to the TV?

So how can my PS3 play HD videos through my HDD do i just have to download the 1GB HD files and my PS3 will just play that or will it get downgraded?

I've been using one of these since last year and it's great. Has played everything I've thrown at it with the exception of the sound on a couple of files.

I haven't used it with Windows 7 but since it reads from standard windows network shares I can't see that it would be a problem.

I ended up canceling the order after reading the astone forums and some reviews. I'm sure it does the job but I decided to go full bore with the wd tv live hub - includes 1tb onboard drive. Interface looks nicer too.
