deledio/connors

Since Deledio has been down back most of our huge problems from the kick outs has dissolved. Leave him be, makes good decisions and delivers it beautifully whcih puts pressure on the opposition as we come out of defence. Has become our Luke Hodge

We're 1-10. Something's broke.
But it's nothing time and experience won't fix.

IMO, keep Lids up back. Someone mentioned that as our best player he should be played in the middle. Bit of a cricket analogy here, in that your best batsmen doesn't open, he bats 1st or 2nd drop. Lids has great pace, and great skill, he should be left in a position where he can use them, not doing so whilst trying to shrug of a tag.

Why dosnt Judd and Ablett play HBF?
There are exceptions, it's not a hard and fast rule. McCleod is an example of the rule, won two Norm Smiths playing off a HBF.

Furthering on the cricket analogy, your best batsman is at first drop because he can play a variety of roles depending on the situation. Lids is our first drop. He's that good that literally wherever he goes aside from the ruck he's going to play well. Happy for him to stay down back for the moment while our team is young and developing but I hope that at some point in his career he is either moved up the ground permanently or at least given the opportunity to play in different positions depending on who we are playing, matchups etc. I can hardly tell the difference between him and Goddard tbh. Maybe Lids is a bit quicker.

I'm likeing Lids off half-back at the moment just like I like him through the centre.
(Skills like he has will go well wherever...)

I still maintain though perhaps in a couple of years when we have solid depth in both those areas, Deledio as a half forward pushing high into the midfield could be the finishing touch to a truly competitive September Tiger unit.

Will finish off all of the hard work done around the ground by others and provide silver sevice to the other forwards... :thumbsu:

Deledio is certainly an exceptional HBF and has been performing very well back there, but we are completely lacking in quality outside mids, whereas we have plenty of HBFs in Newman, Connors, Webberley and Tambling, with McMahon still on the list as well, with Dea and ORLY developing.

Not to mention that even on the HBF, Deledio still does his best work well forward of the defensive 50. With our forward line problems and lack of quality delivery, Deledio is the player we most need kicking it inside 50 to hit up a target or put it through the big sticks. He's also a genuine marking target which with our shocking spread of goalkickers is incredibly valuable.

For mine, I'd use him like a midfield-centric Goddard - play him in different positions depending on where he is needed, but mainly through the midfield which is where our biggest deficiency is.

Mcleod was a midfielder/HFF when he won his norm smiths, and in 2001 when he should have won the brownlow.

As for lids he is our Goddard, but Goddard isn't a HBF he is a pure utility, he played forward and midfield on Friday night and when we made a charge in the 3rd he went to the backline. With Connors back in the side I would like to lids go forward and help out jack, rotating thru the midfield. Send tambling, Connors and Newman back as our running HBs.

Hodge plays HB because hawks lack good defenders and a somebody to run the show. Gibbs it's more because he is a squib. These to also lack the extreme pace that lids has which means they can get exposed in the midfield where as they have time to react to the play at HB and use their superior football brains to get to the ball.

you will find that goddard plays predominantly HB and plugs holes if/when required but his general role is HB. Hodge the same and Gibbs the same. Goodwin played a lot off HB, edwards McLeod. All thes guys have something in common, excelent readers of the play and strng to silky skills to launch attacks.

every player you have mentioned as our "plenty of HB's" have question marks.
Tambling has to prove himself,
mcmahon is gonski and cant defend,
Dea is extrememly raw and uproven,
webberley hasn't shown if he can defend at AFL level.

geez settle down ppl, half you blokes dont even know what youre talking about.
Deledio is set at HB and should stay there for the foreseeable future until we show we have quality HB's who can run and distribute, only then would I release him, right now wehave a severe lack of them.

Besides HB is infinitely more important than the wing or an outside midfielder these days, so why iseveryone crying out fr him to be a wingman when HB's are more damagin roles these days? weird..... AND we've shown we don't need him as an extractor anymore bc WE ARE NUMBER 1 IN CLEARANCES IN THE COMP over the past 6 weeks you dummies.

I'll rephrase it then. If he aint broke, don't fix it.

Deledio has proved he can play better and influence games more through the midfield (see last half of 2009) so why settle for something less? I'd be seriously disappointed if Hardwick leaves Deledio up back when Connors comes back this week and joins Webberly, Newman, etc.

I don't think it's settling for something less. If a player is playing well in a certain spot, why move him? The midfield has been going nicely without and when we get Jackson and Foley back, it will be fine.
The only thing I think we miss from Lids is his goalkicking. He has proven he is a goalkicker and I thinm some of our mids to start kicking some goals. Our lack of scoring power is embarrassing at present.
So, I will kind of sit on the fence with this one.
I would prefer to see him stay in defence, but I am not totally against a shift.

The reason being is the backline is where your attacks start from and to start those attacks you need your quality ball users down there.

That's why Webberly, Newman and now this week Connors will be there. Good ball users. That's more than enough attacking options.

So personally I would like to see him stay at HB, as I don't think we've missed him that much in the middle. With Cotchin Martin Jackson Tuck & Foley all capable of winning contested possession

Yes, we're very good at clearance work and contested ball. It's what happens when we get on the outside of the pack. White, Jackson, King, Tuck delivering into the F50 or Deledio? Hmmm, touch choice. DH has stated we need more outside midfielders but we have Deledio just sitting there, our best player who has the best skills in our team. Put him in the thick of it where most of the action takes place.

I agree. It just seems strange when we win clearances and inside 50s so well our best player isnt in the thick of it. Connors and Newman are more than capable back there.

Deledio could play well in any position because he's a modern day athlete with good skills. His best position is midfield.

I disagree. We can win the ball in the contested situation very well but it's what happens when we get it on the outside. Our ball delivery inside 50 is terrible. It's probably why DH has stated we need outside mids. I remember the other week when were struggling (think it was the Essendon match). Lids was stuck up back and it was frustrating watching then he seemed to get moved into the midfield for a quarter and the whole match turned. He set up goal after goal.

Then he went back to the HB and the Bombers started to get back on top.

We already have Newman for the Goddard/Hodge roll, he has the accuracy and penetrating kick to get us out of trouble. Deledio should be in the middle taking it into our 50 creating goals not taking it out of the oppositions 50.

please..

newman isnt half the player Lids is let alone goddard/hodge

I never said Newman was or better than Deledio, i'm just it would be better if Newman was kicking to Deledio from our defensive 50 into the centre then Lids kicking into our 50, as Lids is probably our best mark besides JR8, and he has the skill to kick the ball both feet into our 50 to the advantage of our players.
Plus i'm pretty sure Deledio is one of the fastest players in the comp(he made Judd look like a turtle a couple years ago) so i'd rather see that speed breaking through packs and helping out our young and very talented midfield. It would also free up Cotch more letting him dominate games, and Martins body strength will just obliterate any wanna be tagger.
Cotch, Martin and Lids is the ideal centre for me.

Lids is easily our best kick and whilst i do like him to create play coming out of the backline, we need him to create play, set up and kick goals from the middle.
Cotchin, Martin, Tuck and Foley are all more inside, hack it forward type players and although this can be good, having Lids roaming on the outside finishing off their good work with his elite kicking is definately what we need going forward.
