Audio device?

i hope someone can help me out

i just formatted my comp and need to re-install everything, including my audio/sound device

but i lost the cd that came with my comp.. now i have no sound whatsoever.

anyone know a legit audio device i can download? or the cd i can buy?

If you've got a dedicated sound card that sits in a PCI slot, post your sound card model no.

Otherwise you've probably got on-board (built-in) audio. In that case, post your motherboard's model no.

Realtek is a common audio device in most computers i think.. u can try download it from download.com

Tried doing a Windows Update, they'll normally find it their.

If not go to you Computer Management and go to the device with the yellow explenation mark. Right click go to Properties > Details > Hardware ID's then google the PID number.

already tried, didnt work, still says i need to insert a cd-rom after restarting the comp

my O/S?? i think its Microsoft Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 3

Go to Start > All Programs and up the top of that list is Windows Update... Do that, it will take a while, go to custom and look in your Optional Updates, should be in there

A number of programs will show it, e.g. CPU-Z. The Mainboard tab will show the manufacturer and model.

Probably easier to follow Plugg3r's advice though and see if Windows Update installs the driver. If you can't find the link on your PC, use this:

OK, so I used Windows Update, and I updated "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Network - Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC", which was in the hardware options. I assumed this was the update i needed as Realtek is some kind of audio codec?

Anyway, I updated but nothing happened. Am I supposed to wait for that yellow update icon to appear in the lower right hand tray?? or was something supposed to happen straight away??

Or do i have to do an update from the software options?? (**** this is doing my head in, off to bed i think)

Run Windows Update again - sometimes it will have several batches of updates if you haven't run it for ages. Make sure you have a look in the 'Optional' updates for something that looks like a sound driver - you need to select these Optional updates manually or you won't get them.

You're right, no audio drivers there. Nothing jawdropping in that list, though I'm surprised you haven't been prompted to install some of the .NET framework stuff before. Maybe you'll appreciate Media Player 11. Can't hurt to install all of it, though I personally hated Windows Search on XP.

That's the stuff. Mobo is an Abit IP-95. You can get all the drivers for it from the Abit site here.

Audio driver is labelled 'Realtek audio driver' (oddly enough). Just click one of the Mirror Site links for Windows XP, download, unzip and install.

Edit: Crap, none of the Abit links work. Very poor. This works though

If that still doesn't work, you might have to tinker with a setting in your BIOS. Report back here for instructions.
