Enough is enough for me with this, where the hell has our tackling ability disappeared to? We simply do not stop anyone with our tackles anymore, classic example in the third quarter Rutten tackles Pettard I think it was in the Dees forward 50, doesn't make it stick, Bate gets the handball and goals. Do we even have a tackling coach? Maybe we need to get someone with a Rugby background in to assist with it. But it is one of the fundamental reasons we are in the poo we are in right now.

Totally agree, Vader and I have been saying this for 3 weeks, we need to employ a NRL tackling coach, a code where pinning the arms is so important, as is bringing your opponent to the ground , it sticks out like dog's balls, I even asked Nathan Bock on the Chat session he had on the Adelaide Now website the other day....he said "they were aware of this and were working on it", FFs who ever it is coaching this the word FAIL comes to mind. You rightly highlight Truck's effort yesterday but he is not Robinson Crusoe, it applies to nearly all our players, perhaps Reilly only gets a "Pass" mark...

The number of times this year I have seen our player's tackles brushed off, or worse still not pin the arms and allow their opponents to dish off an effective h/b is mind numbing. Watching Melbourne yesterday simply highlighted their superiority in this important aspect of our code, scary really!!! I think our "hardness" and attack on the ball at present is up for debate as well.

That implies we had it in the first place....... :p

My cousin was a very good rugby league player - pretty sure he had offers from NRL clubs - but got a pretty bad injury IIRC, and never got the chance.

There was an occasion when he went down to Crows training as part of a state squad (I think), and they tried to teach the guys who were on the list at the time, how to tackle properly.

Said they were absolutely useless at it, and took no interest in the session at all, and had no desire to get better at it - which from a supporters POV is very disappointing.

We have been poor in this aspect for a while now,I guess this is what some are saying about getting back to basics.

We can be as fit as we want but it's not working and some goal kicking would handy

“For me, a lot of tackling is
intent. Technique might take
about 20 per cent of it and intent
takes up the rest, in terms of just
the desire to make that tackle and
make it stick. The technique is
really your icing on the cake.”
Bolton, who plays his 200th
game against Melbourne at
Manuka Oval this weekend, said
tackling skills have become more
important in the AFL this season.
“I think it’s definitely stepped
up another level,” Bolton said.
“I just want to make sure I’m not
missing too many tackles, so that
you’re giving your teammates the
best opportunity of winning the
ball back.”

At training in the pre season, about four years ago now, I saw a rugby coach rock up and put the guys through their paces.

If we've done it before why not do it again?

Perhaps we didn't think too much of it...

without mongrel, there is no tackling!!

also while i'm at it, were too much of a pretty club, too many blonde tips and highlights

time to bring back 2 things, the number 1, and the mullet!!!!

Totally agree and was going to start a thread on this exact issue. The problem is, we will continue to give up games of footy as long as this basic football skill is neglected any longer. I cannot recall one moment thus far, where a player has pinged the opposition for holding the ball. Too many half hearted attempts where the players just sticks out the arms only for the player to push through them. It's not isolated events that is costing us either. It is missed tackle, after missed tackle where a chain of poor tackles are allowing the opposition to complete a set play.

The question I'm most curious about is whether people think it is a technique issue or even something to do with our style of play. At the moment the few tackles sticking, are not necessarily strong tackles. The ball is still being released and more often that not it is still hurting us. At times the players look wary about laying a strong tackle and has got me wondering if it could be something to do with our game style. The players often seem more content with corralling the opposition and forcing an error than going in for the tackle and more often than not it has ended up with the player forced to tackle too late.
It's hard to draw this type of conclusion off of three games, if at all  and very hard to believe a club would neglect one of the most basic AFL skills, but I guess you never know whats being planned down there with the various tactics, zoning, etc that go around.

Some of the posters around that manage to see the boys train, what was the tackling like at training? Do they dedicate much time to tackling sessions?

Plus somebody in the team needs to bring back the Goatee

Hopefully Craigy will get asked "What are we doing about our appalling ability to stick a tackle?" - Hes on 5AA tonite and Id be interested to hear what he has to say.

Intent certainly has a lot to do with it but you've also got to be in the position to make it stick. Its like trying to lift/move a load - your feet have to be in the right position or you wont do it properly.

Methinks that this has been a problem for sometime, but it's been masked by the fact that we've been a pretty fit bunch, and have played the zone style of game very well in the past. The implication is that zoning often requires players to sit off their opponents and guard space or corral them rather than commit to a tackle and risk freeing up someone further afield. It's also probably the reason we struggle when opposition teams man up on us and prevent us from zoning off.

Former Australian Rugby League & NSW Captain and current Leeds player Danny Buderus is currently staying in Adelaide for the birth of his second child and is training at the club gym.

While I understand a few of the players have mentioned to him in passing he should help them with their tackling you would think the club would be more proactive and make the use of him while he was here. I'm sure he would do it for nothing and for those who know anything about Buderus know he is a fantastic guy who would be great to have around the club.

Our tackling is poor and surely some input from one of the greats of the game of Rugby couldn't hurt.

I am of the total opposite opinion. I do not see anything wrong with our tackling. Yes the odd senior member misses them sometimes but most of the tackles you see slip are from our young underdeveloped players who don't have the core strength at present to make a big tackle stick against a developed player. Since we played so many youngsters this year I feel it looked worse than it actually was. You watch over the summer these young kids will get another stint in the gym, build up their core strength and a lot more of those tackles will stick.

Our tackling was disgraceful last year.

The club should be looking at every advantage they can get. Some sessions with the 1-3 year players should be manditory and a refresher from a different standpoint wouldn't hurt everyone else.

Obviously you didn't read my comment too well. I said it was bad because we played a lot of young underdeveloped players who haven't got the core strength yet to hold big tackles against other developed players. Pretty simple.
Plus when your losing and losing often nothing goes right for you. We have always been a good tackling side, in the top half of the comp most years. Something we should work on, correct, but not as diabolical as you state it.
Plus these days its more about gang tackling than individual tackling. You watch any top side and most of the time its 2,3,4 guys swarming the ball carrier and bringing them down.
Some seem to forget the great tackles we also had last year. Does anyone remember one said Johncock tackle on some dud called Gary Ablett?
Last year was a complete right off and more went wrong than went right. I'd be more interested in where we need to improve after this year as its a totally new group of players with new strengths and weakness'.
