Actually, I just noticed that you used a capital S for "Star" coaches. Is that a clue that the Suns will become the Stars next year?

In all seriousness though, I reckon P.Roos would rate as a "star" coach. He seemed to be able to institute a highly effective playing strategy as well as facilitate a highly effective player code; both of which seem to be credited as having played a massive role in Sydney winning a flag from two Grand Final appearances, despite people not rating the team as being as talented as other teams in the competition at the time, and certainly not rated as being as talented as WCE. So, not only is Roos someone who has a track record of getting the most out of arguably limited talent, he is also someone who has cut it against the best and proven to be a winning coach at the highest possible level.

I'd also say that Roos left Sydney in a fairly reasonable shape and appeared to give J.Longmire a very good preparation to take on the senior job, which I think is also a very commendable achievement, given that most coaches seem to coach for themselves and their own legacies in the latter stages of their careers at various clubs.

If Roos was available, or rather, interested in coaching again, I think the club would have to seriously have to think about attracting him to the senior role given his credentials. With that said, it could be quite a difficult prospect if that occurrence happened to be at the end of this year, with Voss still having a year left to run on his contract. It would be quite sad if in getting Roos, that we ended up having a M.Harvey/R.Lyon situation ala Freo, with the difference being that it involves a club legend (Voss).

Although the club is bigger than just the reputation, feelings or ego of an individual club legend, there would still be the chance of wider fallout and negativity if we were to simply sack Voss in the same manner that Harvey was sacked at Fremantle. If Roos came out at the end of this year and said he was interested in coaching again, it would be difficult to manage the situation whereby we wouldn't be able to sack Voss until we were assured of procuring Roos's services and then inevitably looking as though we'd done the dirty on him when it all came out. On the flip-side, if we were to sack Voss first, things could end up going extremely pear-shaped if Roos ended up agreeing to coach elsewhere, leaving us with no coach.

Alternatively, if at some point next year, it becomes apparent that re-contracting Voss beyond 2013 would be a bad move, then I'd hope that we would make serious inquiries with Roos and be prepared to fork out the money to get him. I also think, within reason, that we'd need to consider allowing Roos to have a similar set up to Matthews, whereby, from memory, he was able to virtually select his own support staff.

Probably would look at what a new coach would bring. Many new coaches started this year, and really the only one to have significantly dragged a team up the ladder has been Brenton Sanderson. A bit out there but look at Kevin Sheedy, he has a very talented, but inexperienced list (similar to the Lions) yet GWS have only managed 2 wins, and of course i think Sheedy would be considered to be a star coach. I agree somewhat with the statements about selection issues, but look at someone like Karnezis, there have been calls left, right and centre to put him in the team, yet when he plays he hardly sets the world on fire... Cornelius is another one, not living up to the hype created. I think on any board there is a tendency to over rate our team. I would say Brisbane have many 'fringe players' where they can breeze through in the reserves but can't quite take that next step at AFL level.

Ryan Lester and Mitch Golby were the two this year that did take that next step, play a large amount of games and contribute consistently. Green would be a little bit behind those two. All in all i 100% agree that it depends what players the coach has to work with, rather than how good a coach is.

On the same point, those players were widely lamented by Cats supporters pre 2007. The club were considering, and came very close to, sacking Mark Thompson. He is now considered a "star coach", where he could have been consigned to the scrap heap.

I saw someone say they hope the club has the balls to shaft Vossy. I hope they have the balls to stick by him, and the plan sold to us after the full club review. Since it happened, we have seen improvement across the board. It takes more guts to stick to your guns in tough times in this industry. Reacting to media horseshit & supporters wanting instant gratification is an easy cop out, and rarely the right option.
