Speed: The guy is very fast, he is top 5 on our list for speed IMO despite being if I recall correctly 198 cm.

Contested Marking: Opening the record I saw that despite missing games Ryder led our contested marking and has the ability to do it frequently.

Size: The guy is pretty big, but not too big, this will compliment his mobility.

Thoughts?

If- and this is a big if- he becomes more of a natural forward, I can't see why not. He sometimes leads into the wrong places, gets stuck in 2- or 3-on-1's and just looks lost up there

Has all the attributes. Working with Lloyd or Lucas on his game sense and leading patterns would push him over the top.
Crameri could also be our guy of he straightens up his set shot and gets through a season unscathed

I clearly remember ordering 3 Paddy Ryder's one for the ruck, one for the forward line and one for the backline can't believe dodoro stuffed up the order and only got one.

I was watching some highlights on Youtube of our earlier season performances and if you look at some of his work in the West Coast and Richmond matches he looked as natural a forward as anyone. If T-Bell can stay fit and in form I can see Ryder working as a 70-30 forward/ruck.

edit. That said, Ryder's best games have always seemed to have been those he has been given a role to do, which may not work as well in the forward line.

Agree with the first part of your post but I reckon for him to really prosper in a forward role he would at least need to be an 80/20 forward/ruck. If he stays in the forward line for the majority of the match I can see him turning into a really good forward.

This is it really, I hate paddy up forward as while he does fire on the odd occasion he just doesn't do it enough. I'd much rather Hurley up forward attacking the ball and giving it his all than Ryder floating around may e getting involved in a contest. As the bold part above highlights I think he is a much better player when he is given a job. I think chb is perfect for him has it's enough space for him to get a little bit creative but still enough for him to focus on a man and that's where he really falls down as a forward, not being creative enough or attacking the footy hard enough.

Wow

We have 3 rucks on our list - One could retire - Let's put our best ruck as a forward - And Ryder isn't a forward at all.
What do you suggest we do then?
Maybe, just maybe, Paddy hasn't been amazing up forward because he has hardly been given a whole game there. Look at Mitch Clark, I believe he can be better than him up forward.

We have 2 rucks that are best 22 - one is much better forward than the other - And Bellchambers does his best work as #1 ruckman !

Ryder likes to be 'The Man', that is the struggle when he is more than capable at many positions whereas most rucks can do only that. He's probably a top 3-5 ruckman if he plays there season long (and i'm trying to not be ridiculous as I'd have him higher tbh - pure ruck taps).

Nar that's not it, paddy has had plenty of chances up forward and he just doesn't attack the ball hard enough IMO and doesn't create enough contest to be an effective forward. His best position I think is chb where like raised earlier he is lead tO the ball and only has to be creative on the odd occasion on the rebound or when giving a chop out in the ruck.

Strange that in 7 years on our list, that the TRB has never thought of Ryder, as a permanent key forward.

And Ryder is a much better first ruck than T-Bell at the moment.

Poor Paddy

Forward/Ruck/Back - The more posts I read, the more I realise, we will have a 15 player defence.:D

Would have thought he should spend less time in the forward line rather than more. 80% ruck, 20% forward for me.

He has all the athletic attributes to be a quality forward but does not really know where or when to lead. Can also be nullified by good backs who can get a body on him. Unfortunatley its quite hard to teach someone to be a forward, you either have it or you don't. Much like Hille, he is a solid forward in a relief role but the more time he is there, the less effective he is.

But Ryder is a better ruck.
Ryder is an 8/10 ruck
Bellchambers 7/10
Ryder is an 7/10 forward
Bellchambers 4/10 forward

That's the issue

And here is the solution, Ryder forward, Bellchambers ruck.
I still don't know why people are against the idea of having ryder as chb. He has shown he can perform very well there and imo much better there than as a key forward. At least if we do that as well we can keep gumby and hurley up forward and play belly in the ruck.
