Awful awful news.

Porsche Supercup championship leader Sean Edwards has been killed in a crash in Australia.

The 26-year-old was a passenger in a Porsche 996 that hit the barriers at Queensland Raceway in Willowbank during a private test session.

Edwards was killed instantly on impact with the tyre wall on the outside of the track.

The accident was initially attended to by onlookers after the car burst into flames on impact.

The local emergency services spent three hours extracting the driver - a 20-year-old man from Brisbane - from the burning wreckage. He is currently in intensive care with life-threatening injuries.

Edwards currently holds an 18-point lead in the Supercup standings with just the Abu Dhabi finale to run.

The safety at that track must come into question after this. It's not the first death on a ride day there.Last year a passenger was killed when the car slammed into a wall.

Edwards has been one of the top drivers in the Porsche Supercup over the last couple of years.

Sad, especially for the family of both men and the witnesses. However they're motor racers, they know the risks, they choose to to do what they do.

This could of been a result of mechanical issues, stuck throttle, brake failure. If the lad driving doesn't pull through, we'll never know.

"We probably used about 35 to 40 fire extinguishers and a 50kg fire bomb to put out the tyres.''
Mr Tetley said the crash happened on the final turn.
He said the Porsche went straight through the bend, crashing through tyres and into a cement barrier behind.
"They had to cut the car in half and pull it apart piece by piece to get to the driver. Emergency services saved his life.''

Wow...

Yeah, really sad. The aftermath looked terrible, must have hit the wall at some insane speed.

I was expecting to see a car up against the wall, not metres away.It must've slammed the wall at high speed to bounce back as far as it has.

Not many people are happy about still racing for points

Sounds like fellow driver Jerome Bleekemolen, who was just here for the V8 enduros,is quite pissed about it.The commentator was saying that he said he'd do anything he could to stop another driver winning it.

Yeah, it's just an awkward position everyone part of the series has to deal with. In one context, clearly it's Sean's title. In another, the season would be incomplete, and (from my pov) it would still be a little hollow for Sean to be declared the winner when there was still a legitimate meeting left. I suppose an alternative would be to declare the season incomplete and not award the title to anyone.

Which I suppose in a way they've done by having the winning driver donate the trophy
