But might take into account the not getting a priority pick

If it does heads should roll. That would be an enormous mark on the integrity of the AFL, free agency and the priority pick rules. That said it's quite possible!

That should be the case but think when they denied the priority pick they said it took into account Frawley compensation. If they put it the otehr way around I might understand though

Pick 10 should be fair enough, it shouldn't disadvantage the other clubs that didn't make the finals

Speaking of which I wonder if there is enough of a sample size by now to reverse engineer the formula... Either way here's hoping if it does spit out a 1st round after their pick common sense prevails and they move it to mid/end of 1st round.

It's roughly over $650k a year for band 1 and $450k and under for band 3, assuming a standard three or four year contract. The bands drop off quickly as you get close to agree 30.

Wow okay, surely the Hawks aren't going to pay >650k/yr...

They DO have a fair whack of salary cap space post-Buddy IIRC... :-/

Fingers crossed.

Edit: Once again, I can't believe I'm effectively hoping for the Pies to be able to get a better draft pick. ****ing trade week.

Reportedly Hawthorn offered him 450k to join. Funnily enough the same report had Melbourne offering 750k to stay...ouch.
"$1.5m. That is how much I wanna get outta here."

You wouldn't think so. There's a fair bit of grey area in there though, between Chaplin/Pearce's contracts and Daisy's. Some of it will be band 3, some band 2 and some band 1, so it really depends where it falls.

$450k could really put the cat amongst the pigeons if it resulted in Melbourne only getting band 3 compo, like it did with Chaplin and Pearce. ;)

Is length of contract a factor?

Is length of contract a factor?

Presumably it is, but we're yet to see any alignment between length and price - probably because we don't have enough samples to show a trend and most contracts are in a fairly tight range of three to five years. The outliers tend to be outliers on both length and remuneration per year.

"$1.5m. That is how much I wanna get outta here."

Suspect that "Frawley taking a $1.5m paycut to leave the club and shaft us with band 2 compensation" will go on that epic "List of everything that has gone wrong at Melbourne in the last 10 years" fan article.

Could potentially play Rich or Hanley off the half back flank and convert Adcock from the 'creative' half back player to a more lock down small defender pushing Harwood/Golby out of the team or to the bench.

Hopefully both get used in tandem or rotated through a flank. The beauty is that both are great kicks. Yet they are unique in the way they can break through opposition defences. Hanley with dash and run and Rich with bombs. Really can't wait to see Rich back.

I think a Merrett/Watts direct swap would be mutually advantageous. Watts is a gun, and he would benefit from leaving the Demons/Melbourne/No. 1 draft pick spotlight; I think he's developed as much as possible under the Demons. I think he'd do well in Leppa's Lions' family environment. Thoughts?

I agree. Rich and Hanley are our two most likely to get the tag and if either one is able to get more room due to the other being the main focus of the opposition's attention we can move the free one to where they are likely to do the most damage - inside, outside or off the hbf.

To manage risk, one must first understand risk.

The risk is that we loose a 30 year old player whose almost certainly past his best, has no room in a developing backline, and has a couple of seasons (at most) to offer his services at senior level. Even if Watts was a failure, this trade would definitively be worth it for us - I can't see Melbourne agreeing to it though (or at least a straight swap for Merrett).

Not sure that claim can be supported with evidence anymore.

He has one of the best kicks in the Demons. He has fast hands. And he always seems to have space and time. And he's still only young (23). He suffered from the weight of expectation and being played out of position at the Dees. I think a bit of Leppa TLC could turn him into a superstar.
