Hawthorn midfielder Will Langford, signed this week to a new four-year deal, hopes to start making his way back into the senior side through the VFL this weekend.
Langford, whose season has been interrupted by niggling injuries, expects to play his first game in several weeks having overcome a knee problem.
The 23-year-old, one of the heroes of last year's finals series, has not featured in the senior side since round 14.
"The knee's pretty good. It's been a couple of months now really since I've been able to play footy and hopefully I'll be able to get back out there this weekend in the VFL," Langford said.
"It will be a bit of a task breaking into the AFL side at the moment; they've been playing tremendous footy. I just need to get out there this weekend, hopefully, and keep chipping away and see what happens.
"It's been a bit frustrating I suppose, but at the same time it's been wonderful to watch the team play the footy it's been playing and have a bit of distance between myself and the game.
"I've been able to sit back and really enjoy how well my teammates are playing, how well the team has gelled at different times and how well it's performed."
Langford's new deal will see him continue at the club where his father Chris played 303 games and in four premierships until at least the end of 2019.
He signed on initially as a NSW scholarship player, having grown up in Sydney, with his younger brother Lachie recruited as a rookie last year.
"It's been a real challenge every step of the way. There's highs and there's lows and it also evens out into a bit of a grind," Langford said.
"I thrive on that, I think, and the group here is so wonderful. It's like a collective effort, really working towards the ultimate goal of trying to win premierships.
"I've just enjoyed being a part of that environment for the past five years and the prospect of doing that for a little while longer is really appealing."
