Sydney were desperate to get him, he was considered close to thr best player in thr AFL, and your trying to tell. E it was a big risk matching thr offer and requesting they give you their first pick? They are prepared to make a deal of 9 years around the million mark but they wouldn't give you pick 15 and something else? You would have at very minimum been guaranteed upgrading by 4 picks in the first round!! And 100% they would have given you it.
So why didn't you match to get a better deal? Which you would have gotten risk free minimum 4 draft places upgraded.

It's simple, you didn't want to entertain the gesture of retaining a player they doesn't want to wear thr club jumper, nobody with a string club culture would match a restricted free agency offer, no club has matched for this reason, nobody is prepared to keep a player who doesn't want to be a part of their club, only a poor culture like Adelaide would entertain this value and message to the rest of thr playing group.

Imagine poor Rory Sloane and tex walker, busting their guts out wanting to be at Adelaide thick and thin and here is Dangerfield wanting to leave and his contract offer will be twice the size.
You're so wrong it's ridiculous. No risk in matching a $10M 9 year contract just to get a pick a few places earlier?

It's essentially would you take pick 19, no strings attached or would you like to gamble your clubs immediate to medium term future that could be felt for years after the decade the contract runs if he stays just to get a pick a few places earlier?

But bringing it back to Adelaide and Damgerfield... At the end of the day they need to be prepared to deal with all possibilities of any action they take.

The risk free option is to let him go, take the compo and suck it up.
The riskier option is to match a possible large financial but short term contract in an attempt to force a trade. They risk him staying and being stuck with it or they risk him walking into the draft.

I don't know if they'll be willing to take those risks. It'll come down to who blinks first with Dangerfield perhaps facing 2 years playing in front of a now hostile "fan" base who know he wanted to go but is now grossly over paid, or going into the draft and being picked up by Brisbane or Melbourne. Then there's Geelong who while some fans are bullish about having nothing to lose if they have to give up a pick/player the reality is that the entire club is committed to the idea of Dangerfield at Geelong in 2016.

You said yourself with Sydney making that offer they were desperate to secure the services of possibly the best player in the league so of course they would give up something substantial to get him. Geelong are in exactly the same situation and possibly the most desperate side to get another teams player ever. They'll pay well in picks and players if they need to.

You don't match an offer with the intention of actually retaining the player. You match the offer to maximise the return for the player by way of trade. It's nothing to do with 'culture'. Just because the contract is 'matched' doesn't mean Dangerfield stays a crow - everyone at the club (and most semi-intelligent people on the planet) would understand that it's clearly just a way to increase the club's net return in the wake of losing their best player. The 'message to the playing group' would be 'pick 11 and a player is better than pick 13'.

Ok, point understood. So then what happens........?

1. Geelong has already traded this year's 1st rd pick for Henderson, leaving next year's 1st rounder (which no one knows the value of now, and therefore may turn out to be worse than the compensation pick(s?) anyway)
2. Danger again says I want to go home
3. AFC says we'll get you to a Melbourne club - Danger says 'not interested' and other clubs may not have the cap space anyway by that stage
4. AFC says we'll trade for players - Geelong says no given too many list changes and won't be sitting at round 7 of the draft by itself to fill those spots
5. Danger has now had enough of the crap, and says I know of one club who has space on their list, cap room, and I won't talk to any other clubs, and threaten the PSD
6. AFC backs down, and takes the compensation pick, and holds itself up in public as being honourable in helping a loyal servant of the club back home for family reasons, uses comp pick(s) as bait to chase Aish, etc

The only wildcard in this process would be........ Motlop. He has value, his agent knows it, and if unsigned at that stage, could leverage into this situation. However, would be a high stakes game on his part as if it doesn't play out, then he has crapped on Geelong, and risks a lower contract value from any club given how late in the process. Has prob used this scenario already to push cats a bit higher, and if rumours are true, may be closer to signing to stay and play alongside Danger next year in a billion dollar midfield.....

Cats know how this feels on the other end given the Ablett scenario, so not trying to rub anyone's face in it - after all, Danger may still decide to stay......

This is absolutely right. It's Adelaide's decision. But I'd expect Geelong to do everything they can to heighten that risk. Considering we're aiming for premierships in the next few years trading in youngish players makes sense. If Dangerfield does accept Geelongs offer I'd be staggered if Geelong had any first round picks left up for trade when the decision on Dangerfield is made.

If that's the case Adelaide is risking their first round pick on convincing one of our better players to move there. That's a pretty massive risk compared to the risk if Geelong are sitting on a couple of picks earlier than the compo.

Shiel, Treloar, Tyson, Dangerfield.

Jeez Richmond could have a great hypothetical "players who obviously desperately want to play for Richmond yet end up going elsewhere" midfield.

Oh yeah, best imaginary midfield in the league! Just add rotations of heppell and Pendlebury and we're on our way to premierships galore!

If danger makes a commitment to Geelong do you think he will want the same in return meaning he will want them to make him their number one priority not Henderson or selwood. He is so good he can demand that Geelong don't have to commit but I doubt PD will commit to them unless it's both ways

Dont fool yourself into thinking the PSD is any threat. Please tell me the last time a player of his quality fell to the PSD? He ends up in the PSD he will be picked up by someone before you guys. No one is going to pass over Dangerfield. Also if he puts himself in the PSD he is saying I am happy to end up where I end up.
Otherwise its draft tampering.

Um, you do realize that FA is decided before trade? We would have decided to match before you would have traded away any picks or players.

Can't remember exactly but did Luke Ball put a big price tag on his head so he got to Collingwood, then by way of what seemed an already made gentleman's agreement took a large pay cut after the first 1-2 seasons with Collingwood doing some clever finances around the loading's of their player contracts?

Luke went into the National Draft not PSD. He was taken at pick 30. Which was about his value really.

Not an unreasonable suggestion.

We all still need to see if he wants to leave, then this big part - what will the AFL allocate in terms of compensation. Only then can everyone work out the next move with any clarity. Until them we're all just full of sh*t.

We can look at what previous compo picks that have received and a glaring example is Buddy, there is no way that the AFL will give Adelaide a better deal than what Hawthorn got. They simply cannot treat clubs differently if two first rounders were offered there wouldnt be a match but as much as I would like that it is not going to happen as Hawthorn would go mental and I would have to agree with them unfortunatly. Every club needs to be treated the same!

And yes he hasnt made up his mind but again logic says the longer it goes the more likely he is gone! I dont like to admit it but need to face reality as Geelong supporters do in terms of how they can secure PD

Come on we don't need that :p I've lived elsewhere, but am back in Adelaide and loving it. It gets such a bad wrap from people who have never been here. It does not need to pretend to be Melbourne or Sydney, we are Adelaide, a bit slow, but nice honest folk!

been here all my life.....................it's a shithole........
