Best way to go about turning over funds you otherwise wouldn't normally bet is to back both sides of an event using another bookie. Sounds like funds disposable income could be an issue so might not be for you but an example I found on tomorrow's NFL is:

$250 on Eagles $1.66 at Crown = $415
$170 on Redskins $2.45 at TAB = $416.50
Total Spend = $420, either $5 or $3.50 loss

Now that was just from a quick look on NFL markets between Crown and TAB - TAB because you won't need to open an account with them. Obviously if you can find what is known as an 'arb' where it is guaranteed profit it is better but if you are keen to just withdraw then $5 is better than doing bets you wouldn't normally.

The money was burning a hole in my pocket so I blew through it all today and did pretty well; started with the $250, got down to $150, back up to $280 and then retired on $230

Rather 'lose' $20 and have a good fun day watching racing than take the guaranteed coin and experience zero emotion

Yea, on second thoughts you're probably right, can't go wrong backing the favs on Lux as a saver even if you find or are keen on some value runners on other sites at inflated odds in the group 1's.

Can combine quite of few of these together on races and have a good weekend.
