Pre-Season 2015/16

My sister had glandular fever when she was in year 12. Basically wiped her out for the year, and it has the ability to linger.

It could be a massive hit to his fitness level. Worryingly, he was already struggling a bit with the workload, but maybe this explains why. I back our fitness and medical staff to do what's right for him, he probably couldn't be in a better environment to get over it.

I had it in Year 12. Missed more than half the year, lost 28kgs, took heaps of time to be able to take stairs without nearly passing out.

It was a killer. Hope he takes it very very easy.

My daughter had it and was sick for about a week. There are numerous examples of it having bugger all effect or having a huge effect. I'm sure Rice will be fine. Its not like this year is that important for him anyway. He has a good 2 but usually 3 or 4 years at the club.

My wife had it in our first year of marriage. When she was diagnosed, they asked me to do a blood test. It showed signs that indicated I had had it the year before. We sat down, and thought about it - eventually said, "Oh, THAT'S why I would finish my part-time job each day at 3pm, come home and collapse in bed for 3 hours..."

Awful stuff. But yeah, everybody's different, and I'm sure our fitness staff have it under control. The bugger I see with it is that, unlike injuries, it leaves no opportunity for Rice to develop fitness in an uninjured facet of their body. Y'know: if they do a knee they can go to the gym and work on their upper body strength, if they do a shoulder, they can hop on the bike and get their aerobic fitness up, etc. All Rice can do is rest.

I had it as a 16 year old, while I was in the Vic Country squad - was hospitalised, and lost 12kg in 2 weeks. Ruled me out for about 2-3 months, however I managed to get my fitness levels to the point where I was as fit as I've been shortly after. In his environment I would imagine it would, with a better base than I had there's no reason he can't return/surpass his previous fitness levels.
The real danger in the inflammation of the spleen, making it more susceptible to ruptures during contact sport. This generally sees footballers sit out longer than an endurance athlete. The positive is that it will allow him to focus on improving his endurance (which was an area of weakness) if he bounces back reasonably quickly.

isn't that 3 months out?

He was likely to play in the first NAB game at Wang. Such is life. It will be managed and just like the $6 million dollar man he will come back stronger, faster, better etc etc etc.

The follow on risk with GF is coming down with chronic fatigue syndrome if the recovery isn't managed well and the sufferer ups the workload too early and too much. If managed properly then one could expect that he will be back to full fitness in about 3 months. Whatever he shows this year will only be a taste of what he will show in years to come.

Haha I had a similar situation, found out I had glandular fever and it finally made sense why life just seemed to be so much more hassle for me than everyone else. The chronic fatigue was an absolute bitch, I just thought I was being lazy.

Apparently once you have had it once you aren't supposed to be able to get it again, but it does come back within the first 12 months for some people... that's the theory at least. I've had blood tests confirm it on three occasions, over about 5 years.

My glandular fever presented as a severe Tonsilitis infection that last 1 month & required procaine penicillin injections in my ass every day for a week & 20 days of Augmentin Duo Forte antibiotics

Had no long term effects. Bailey should be fine but you never know how it's gonna hit you

I had GF when I was 27. Wasn't too flash for about 3 months, and then it left as quick as it had come. I still went to work etc. Just had no energy. Think mine was pretty mild on reflection.

The doctor at first told me my liver readings showed I must be an alcoholic, and started ticking me off. Then a quick u-turn when he looked at the next page of results. Ooops...you've actually got glandular fever.

In QLD on Friday.

Look forward to some in depth reports especially on the likes of Acres and Gresham

Yep I'm going to the Intra club. Really looking forward to it.
It's Sinc's 21st birthday the day of the Intra club too! :D Shall we all sing happy birthday in harmony?...
Can anyone fill us in with how The Sinc is tracking this pre-season? Haven't heard anything on him at all, want to see him in the midfield more this year.

Mega disappointed at the timing, the Saturday morning ones were a huge success with great turnouts. It will be the first intra club I've missed in years so no in depth insights from me this year. Hopefully the club puts it up on the website like they have in the past.

Saints play it safe with injury-prone recruit

ST KILDA recruit Nathan Freeman will not feature in the NAB Challenge as the Saints take a conservative path with the midfielder's recovery from hamstring troubles.

Freeman, who was repeatedly sidelined in his two years at Collingwood, strained his right hamstring again in December during his first summer with the Saints.

Looks like he is again 2 weeks away from the main group. Can the people ITK elaborate more on this because it seems as though every week he seems to be 2 weeks away from the main group. It's been a month now that they have been saying the ol 2 weeks away line.

I was told late last week he could play nab 2, richo in the interview even says he could play. They are just being conservative because there will be alot of expectation on him when he is fit

It will be interesting when he rejoins the main group and with this super conservative approach how the hamstring holds up. He has already had a minor hiccup without being involved with first team training.

I was the same. Had mine in 2013 and I didn't fully recover until late last year.

I had just put it down to me being old and fat and trying to run around after a toddler, but once diagnosed it made perfect sense.

My doc sent me in for an MRI: showed cysts all over my liver and my pancreas was twice its normal size. I then had to go see a specialist to make sure it wasn't actually cancer! Pretty scary stuff for a day or 2. But all good in the end.

I'm sure Bailey will be fine, it'll just take time. Not great news for me as his advocate. I may have to swap my avatar of him to that old geezer dressed up as captain snooze!

Edit: actually I've just realised my wife must have it now too. It would explain why she always comes to bed with a headache and wants nothing to do with me. Yep. Makes sense. Poor girl, she must have had it for years now! :)

It clearly wasn't a 'minor strain' as the club first reported. We'll be lucky to see him at all this year.
