"While you'll need to be an Optus customer to get all the EPL action, Optus research shows that close to two in three (63 per cent) football fans, who are not already Optus customers, are out of contract for at least one of their fixed broadband or mobile services," Optus managing director of marketing and product Ben White said.

"We're confident that when these fans see our range of great value EPL-ready plans, they'll be convinced that now is the right time to switch."

Yeah my mate quoted that to me. Seems garbage and fraught with risk to base their entire strategy off such a specific survey.

I'm out of contract with Voda in a month, but no way in hell am I switching to Optus just for this - my GF will get it for me for free through her Optus plan!

Hang on. Back up here. So people could just switch their cable to Optus, carry on getting Foxtel, and get EPL for free?

I brought this up a few pages back and got told I was an idiot and you needed a phone or internet plan with Optus.

I read that as cable as in internet plan, which would mean his internet plan was with Optus...

So your missus goes and supports Hull with you early in the morning and is now going to supply you EPL for free through her plan. Something tells me you won't be going anywhere anytime soon :)

I read cable as cable, that being Pay TV.

Nope. Optis Yes TV is available on any broadband provider. However if you want EPL you need to sign either a broadband or mobile contract with them at this stage.

So not cable.

If only the Liberals hadn't killed the NBN we'd have streaming we could rely on in far more places. Optus will tinker with their tech to let live games dominate bandwidth overnight, but that won't work this time of year with early games. And Foxtel still has UCL, cups, delayed matches of the 'big 5'...

But this whole process has been completely successful one way: people have considered Optus. And:
  • They overcharge like Telstra, but without the coverage Telstra gets thanks to the old government-build Telecom infrastructure.
  • My mate had a Fetch box given to him for free. It has to connect to his modem so he runs a cable the length of his house to the TV room, already annoying him, and then of course, it doesn't work well. G-lit-ch-iitch-tchhyy y.y.
  • If you are eligible for their Broadband it is $20 more than iiNet or $40 more than TPG (500GB) to get the PL plans. So they're deliberately keeping PL off their competitively priced plans. i.e. this is the Telstra business model - let's hope our customers are too intimidated by tech to not swap to the much cheaper options, but of course Optus don't have Telstra's back-up argument of coverage.
  • It's the same with mobiles: An Optus 6GB prepaid mobile deal is $40/mth. A 6GB postpaid 24-month contract is $80/mth. Why on earth would anyone be on a long-term contract deal? Presumably it's because they get a 'free' phone that covers the $1000 worth of difference (give it 6 months and that prepaid deal will be 10GB for $40). And to show how truly dumb Optus thinks we are, they have introduced a $85 rate, identical to their 6GB $80 plan, that gets you the EPL 'included'. But of course you need $5 for the Fetch thing to connect it to your TV. So that EPL 'included' is actually an extra $10 - a MASSIVE $5 saving!
The idea of a loss leader is it introduces people to your company in a good way. This has just highlighted how crappy Optus are, and how dissatisifed their customers are, and it's also unified a bunch of people who will probably now hold out for a cheaper offer even if Optus relents.
As an aside, I understand that people like to rail against the Foxtel "monopoly" (which is a not a legislated monopoly) and anything Murdoch-related but increased competition will ultimately leads to consumers spending more money. Do you think Sky Sports subscribers in the UK are happy that BT broke Sky's stranglehold on football and they now have to pay for two sets of sports channels?
Competition has already given everyone on Foxtel Sports BeIn for an additional $1/mth which all Foxtel customers have to pay on their base package.
It's crazy that they think the EPL is that big. They way they've gone about it you'd think nearly a 1/4 of the country actually tune in live every weekend!
Premier League is big and getting bigger. Don't believe Foxtel's comments to shareholders after they lost the rights. Just use your eyes and look at the streets and parks. An immigrant nation is only going to get more round-ball followers. The UCL has taken some of the attention away, but LCFC fixed that.

There's a difference between following the league and viewer numbers watching it live week in week out

I seen ratings somewhere where Everton vs Arsenal was the 11th highest rating Foxtel sports telecast over a certain period (76000 viewers). IIRC there was a United - LFC game a few years ago at 9.45pm that rated 200k +. It's definitely a significant market.

Not sure who used the term cable but either way it's pretty clear you need to sign an Optus broadband or mobile contract to purchase EPL access at this stage.

No doubt a few of the 38 matchdays get good viewer numbers but a lot of games especially the good ones end up being Sunday which becomes Monday morning so Foxtel will never maximise the potential.

You need to get with the times. They'll have Champions League, Europa, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, and the English Championship next season for free.
Which I'm enjoying. Might find a championship team to follow a bit closer (not Hull, wouldn't want to steal your thunder :p). Being able to record UCL shall be good.

As for EPL, either Spurs need to broadcast games like Liverpool do (that is right isn't it jod23?) or I'm finding a stream somewhere.

Optus are obviously using it as a vehicle for internet and phone subscriptions and will be hopeful of people switching over as their existing contracts expire but they're overestimating how many people are willing to pay that much to watch the Premier League at 3am on Monday mornings. Foxtel always had the AFL and NRL at reasonable times to really drive people into subscribing.

Prediction: Costs and barriers lowered within 6 months of the first ball being kicked. Be amazed if it's the same setup by May 2019.

You're kidding right? Cable internet has been around for years. You can purchase cable internet through Foxtel if you have Foxtel via cable (not satellite) right now.

Optus even use the terminology on their website:

http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-broadband/plans

I know what cable internet is. Funnily enough that link is to 'home broadband'. Broadband, internet, the net, etc. are all terms I use to describe an internet connection. Cable has always equated to Pay TV.

It's not worth continuing with, was just making the point it seemed like you were suggesting having your Pay TV with Optus would allow you to get EPL. That's not the case. Play on.

Cable referred to broadband that was installed via a dedicated cable, rather than ADSL (via your existing phone line). Pretty common knowledge I thought.

Get on board Brentford!

Say what? I've suggested completely the opposite. You have to have a broadband or mobile contract to access EPL on Optus Pay TV.
