Although not setting the world on fire  I'm pretty happy with how I'm going as a newcomer (& an old bustard). I'm already thinking of some changes based on the feedback and the experience so far (thanks to all).

My away design seems to be faring a bit better than the home one & has me thinking I should have perhaps stuck to my original home design:

Also, I thought I was being mighty clever;) using the thick ISC collar on akkaps' template as a smoke/ash plume, but nobody's commented on it so far :'(.

All told though, an enjoyable (& educational) experience.
That being your home would make more sense, couldn't work out why your home and away kits had slightly different volcanoes on them, this one captures the flow of lava a lot better.
I'm not sure I gave my thoughts on your kits yet so I might as well give them now. I think that the Volcanoes name has a fair bit of potential although I think that ultimately the restrictions of paint really let you down, if you had something like photoshop I would have played with the lava trails like the image below and you could have come up with a really kickass design, even using that sort of style on an established footy design like hoops or a sash.

Having said that though, I don't reckon your design is a disaster just missing some finishing touches, like something that I know I look for is continuity between the back and front of a design and you are kind of missing that. If you had found a way to make the edges of the volcano move into side panels on the back that could have looked really and brought the whole thing together.

Didn't get why you'd done that, but now that you've explained it I'll probably be voting for your design more often. Very clever indeed.

Thanks fancyscum: great feedback. I'm working my way very slowly towards Photoshop (which I was pretty daunted by when I did the free trial), probably via Corel DRAW (which I had a version of on my computer in the late 1990s/early 2000s and had some fun with it then - did the back of the ochre complete with gradients and thought that was mighty fine!).

This is such a cool branding story. Have you ever been to Anglesea? Great part of the world. I reckon I could retire there.
Yeah been to Anglesea a few times, nice down there.

My only bugbear with these kits / promos is that you've been using the logo for the American Target, otherwise they're very good

yeh i thought they were close enough that i could get away without people noticing it was the wrong one. i couldn't be bothered trying to find a vector of the australian version in all honesty

Circles aren't hard, Franklin Gothic Condensed (may need bold or black). You're welcome.

Learning to trace is very useful in these situations.
