Looks like everyone that made the Pro Bowl is out injured. I'm still sick at how we just faded out like that.

Being a North fan andana, you should be use to it by now.. ;) My Steelers have a bad habit of serving me the same. Raise hopes and then… splat on the road (except for 2005 post season of course).

Yes, sadly I am also an Arsenal fan so it's a sad life.

Any way at least Mack won something.

So we've added John Pagano to the staff as assistant head coach - defense. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Wade Phillips was considered for the same position before signing a deal to be the DC for the Rams.

Am I in love with the Pagano hire? No, but he's solid. He's had two top 10 defenses in terms of yards allowed, but the highest he's had in terms of points allowed was 11th. Apart from this season, his defenses in terms of points allowed have been between 11 and like 16. and let's not talk as if he's had a lot of talent to work with, because the Chargers haven't had much talent on that side of the ball.

The biggest takeaway from this is that Pagano runs a similar front schematically to that of Wade Phillips, whom Pagano worked with for 3 years (2004-2006) whilst Phillips was the DC in San Diego. It certainly appears as though Jack has identified problems from a schematic point of view and is trying to rectify it with this hire.

So what is Norton going to do. JDR didn't seem to rate him during the season. Why is he still with us.

Some doubt about this the further along we go.

Hard to believe anything we hear at this point. It truly depends on who you speak to, because everyone is giving a different story on things.

Khalil Mack, an All-Pro no matter what position he’s rushing the passer from, has been named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. The third-year Raider finished his 2016 campaign with just 11 sacks, but terrorized quarterbacks with his speed rush and ability to dislodge the ball on contact.

The former No. 5 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft has been a revelation as a professional. Oakland has been able to line him up at both outside linebacker and defensive end to slice through blockers and force bad throws. Mack’s athleticism and strength give him the speed to rush around the edge or the power to cut inside and engage blockers one-on-one.

Mack got 44% of our sacks. Could have better stats if he got some of those holding calls.

A.Smith to be reinstated in March. from an inside report. ?

Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack is Pro Football Focus' fourth-best player from 2016.

Generating pressure is often not enough for some when it comes to judging pass-rushers — they need to see game-changing, impact plays, wrote PFF. “That’s the step forward Khalil Mack took in 2016. He won the game against Carolina for Oakland with an interception of QB Cam Newton on a simple quick screen, and then later by forcing a fumble on a strip sack to seal the result. No player generated more pressure on quarterbacks than Mack did this season, but he also made the signature plays that Von Miller has made a habit of in the past; those moments had been relatively lacking from Mack’s tape in previous seasons. Khalil Mack was the game’s most complete edge defender this season, and a true impact player for the Oakland defense.”

I don't know why everyone is excited by Aldon Smith's return.

He looked a shell of the player he was at the Niners when he was with us. The beast Justin Smith surely helped inflate his numbers and affect. That looked so when he played with us. Didn't impress. Wasn't a one-man wreaking crew like the REALLY good players are.

Think Aldon returning is a mirage of hope. We're better off finding gun 3-4 ends that help Mack create more havoc, and finding another OLB to compliment.

Aldon isn't going to make the same impact that he made when at the Niners in his early years. But he's still a solid player. Seattle had 3 edge rushers (Michael Bennett, Bruce Irvin and Cliff Avril) when they won it. Mack, Irvin and Aldon will be used in a similar fashion going forward this year in Oakland.

The biggest impacts we need are interior linemen and at least one 3-down linebacker.

It'll be interesting to see how good (or bad) reggie is having to draft in the late 20s. He's had a bunch of drafts picking at the very top of each round, and has had just a FEW great picks over the years. So many that didn't amount to much. Really, just Carr, Mack, Jackson, Cooper so far are Bona Fide studs.

Teams like Packers, Steelers, constantly have to pick from the late 20s every year and their rosters are generally more loaded with talent than teams picking in the top of each round for a decade like Browns, Jaguars, etc.

Imagine the carnage Phillips would have caused with Mack? It would have been his new Ware/Watt/Miller

The constant of those teams is that they have a franchise QB whilst the teams picking at the top of the draft are pretty much always in need of a franchise guy.

You say that RM has found 'just Carr, Mack, Jackson, Cooper' as if any team could find those guys. Look at Jacksonville for instance in terms of their first round picks since 2011: Gabbert, Justin Blackmon, Joeckel, Bortles, Fowler and Ramsey.

In contrast, since RM took over as GM our first round picks have been DJ Hayden, Mack, Cooper and Joseph. No brainer on which group I'd rather have.

It's easy to draft players when you take hindsight into the equation. To get your franchise QB, the best defensive player in football last year and a true #1 receiver in the league who has set records which haven't been seen since Randy Moss. If it was so easy, every team would have big turnarounds from mediocrity to success within a very short time frame.

I actually think RM isn't going to have problems drafting later in the first round. He's found Carr, Edwards, Jackson, Carrie, Rivera, Murray etc in the lower rounds, and that's before we look at many solid undrafted free agents such as Jalen Richard.

This team isn't just built solely on a few nice picks at the top of the draft.

Nice response.

Mind you, without Carr, Mack, Jackson and Cooper, this team is shit. Even just without Carr, the team couldn't win a game.

How many teams not named New England have had their franchise QB miss games and not skip a beat?

Dak was an MVP candidate this year with an elite running game from Zeke. Do you think anyone expected such a performance from a 4th round rookie?

You think Tannehill is a franchise QB?
Just giving you two quick examples, of teams who have go on and continued winning games without their franchise QB.....BECAUSE....the team is pretty talented around the roster to make up for the loss of their starting QB. Whereas Raiders crumpled. Showing there's still a little way to go in Reggie's talent acquisition skills before we can keep motoring along after the loss of a star player or two.

Connor cook didnt have pretty much a whole season to be ready like Dak did. Got thrown in at the deep end, and mcgloin is not a starting qb. Also out running game was not close to as damaging as the Cowboys.

But you are right. Plenty of work still.to be done.

So in other words you think that Tannehill is a franchise QB. Right, got it.
