So essentially the question is would we rather have

Though the last couple of years might be questionable - though that is debatable - surely you still just have to go for what you think is the best available talent at the time. I think that Option 2 is the better one.

Wasn't in the top 5 on the ground in the Coach's votes for that game and was 5th best in the B&F voting for that game.

He did kick 4 goals, but Betts kicked 5 and Cameron kicked 4. Still not exactly what I'd call tearing a game apart, especially when we won by 14 goals, with the game over by half-time.

SA's population grew by 1 third to 1 quarter of the amount most other states did. It means more people are moving away from SA than are moving to it. I just figure the same applies to football players as they are people too.

If gov left you would be disappointed he was a speculative pick that was shown a lot of faith by the coaching staff he wasn't ripping it up in the twos and if he didn't have the players around him like he does in that forward line how would he travel. However picking him was the right decision

Lever if he leaves may have been the wrong decision to draft him, should we seriously consider the best local talent at the top end of the draft

Milera good pick he won't be going home unless he leaves us to play for centrals, we picked Galluci the first SA kid picked after him was Hayward we had Doedee the first SA kid after him was burton

Should we be looking heavily into this and weighing up our options

I hate to look at the non SA players who have left who are currently playing in the AFL which were top end picks, danger, Davis, Gunston. Tippet was pick thirty something so he doesn't count

The only question is how much of a gap is there between the one we picked and the first SA kid available, the ironic thing is the SA kid actually looks better than the kid we picked on both occasions for the last two years

So just because Burton was born in Adelaide, doesn't mean by the age of 24 he wouldnt be looking at relocating to another state. He has a high paying job, he could base his football in any of the major cities in Australia.

yeah but most people leave SA for employment opportunities, not because the coffee is shit (which it isn't ) - both SA clubs have the same amount of cash to give players as every other club in the country so you'd think that would be mitigated a bit.

of course the problem though and why it is a similar situation is that there are way more side-gig opportunities and pathways into being the next B-Grade boundary rider in Melbourne than there are anywhere else. It's a clear advantage that makes the salary cap for Melbourne based clubs go that little bit further, and even more so for the Collingwoods and Hawthorns with more influence behind them.

I can't see the Crows trading him for anything less than a first rounder. West Coast couldn't offer him $500k+ and, at the same time, claim he's not worth a first round pick.

We won back to back flags with the majority of the team from SA, West Coast won their flags with mainly West Aussies playing. There's nothing wrong with picking our best kids, after all we are a footy state and our kids are pretty bloody good.

We also got all (or most) of those SA players through our inaugural start-up concessions - some of which are probably equivalent to first round draft picks if the current system was in place then.

How much would 'beating freo' come into play as part of this if gov just says 'home' as opposed to naming a team ? If it's a one horse race sure you have more power but if it's a competition, a bit like Polec coming to SA a few years ago...

That's just factually incorrect. McGovern averaged 1.2 contested marks per game last year. Jenkins averaged the same, while Tex averaged 1.9 contested marks per game.

Both players also had McGovern covered in every other statistical category except tackles.

If tex or jenkins had to take the marks Gov had they would be well under.
They do get some contact but tex and JJ has maybe one huge mark every 3-4 weeks

Not denying that but the analysis gives unfair weighting to those that leave over those that stay . Not sure of the numbers but I think at least half of our squad would be from interstate. As a club you have to back yourself in to hold the best available talent and if you can't then get the best deal . Buying local only will be a major step backwards

If we had of gone Burton over Doedee we would be better off. Kid is favourite for the Rising Sun.

If bid hard for him we will lose a pick that we could potentially use on finding and developing a kennedy replacement (good draft for KPP's) or finding another mid that they need. I think the we personally know that we got bigger issues to fix than go all out for a talented medium tall
Personally id be happy for freo to over reach for him. In that way we can go for JJ from the dogs and address our issue with foot speed.
