I'm 47 1/2, but not in any hurry for membership. Not quite ready to embrace my closeness to the end.:p

How about I send a Junior Associate Membership form through the post? You won't have to come to meetings, but can drop in here anytime you like and you will have the prestige that goes with belonging to the wisest clique on Big Footy.

Look, I don't want to join, because frankly, I'm not ****ing 50 (stop trying to make me 50):straining:. However, I do appreciate your hospitality and would like to sign the visitors' book from time to time. Perhaps the over 40s clique could share reciprocal rights.;)

Excellent. We'll drop you a line in two and a half years about the other.

I never realised how many "firsts" and "milestones" involved Brisbane Bears v Geelong.
Here is the first ever night game played at Carrara:

Then there is this, fortunately it's not the whole game:

Then there was this! Some very familiar faces in this Bears side.

Junior Associate Membership Papers are in the post. If you are 45 now that means you were 14 or so when Micky Conlan kicked the winning goal against Essendon in the 1986 Elimination Final. If you can remember that then you are in. If you can't because your memory is fading, here it is again.

I was there. Remember cheekily saying "never in doubt"as we left.

I was there with my Dad. We had seats that were allegedly under cover but they weren't (at the very front of the second deck). We were saturated by games end. And before Mickey kicked that goal we were pretty miserable because although the scores were close it just felt like one of those games where we would succumb to a sucker punch in the wet. And to be fair a few things went right for us in that last quarter. I'm not sure who was more shocked at the siren - us or the bomber supporters. We kept our heads down leaving the ground I can tell you.

One of my great regrets was missing Mick's goal.

We'd scored (legit) undercover seats on the outer wing and Dad, true to form, at the 25 minute mark, upped and headed for the concourse so we could make a dash for the car as soon as the siren went.

After making it downstairs, I remembered I'd left my Walkman on my seat, so I quickly turned around and made my way back upstairs WITH MY BACK TO PLAY.

Nekminit, colossal roar, turned around, see Fitzroy players hugging, Fitzroy supporters hugging, checked scoreboard, double checked scoreboard... yes!

Made way back down to join Dad and chew nails as the last minute of play unwound. Siren. Most euphoric feeling of my life - and that isn't an exaggeration.

Obligatory abuse from Essendon supporters while leaving ground.

Was the best two hour trip back to Preston ever.

More on that famous goal and amazing Elimination Final. It's worth watching the whole game if you have the time. Essendon were the reigning 'Back to Back' Premiers and Fitzroy had finished the season needing to win every game for a number of weeks just to make it. With Quinlan and Rendell out through injury, few people, apart from the Fitzroy faithful, gave us any hope. At times the football wasn't pretty, but it was played at 100% intensity throughout. The commentary from Peter Landy, Lou Richards and Bob Skilton is classic and miles ahead of what we have to put up with today. Not always eloquent, but it conveyed the raw emotion of the game beautifully.

The players aren't to blame for our loss tonight against Geelong. We were robbed by the umpires.

On the upside, how good is McCluggage at sticking his tackles! When he tackles an opponent they stay tackled. A couple of great efforts last night, rewarded with free kicks. This was another area where others need to improve. Geelong brushed us off too frequently or simply waltzed around and through us. As our younger players mature physically and grow in confidence, we will naturally get better in this department.

Bernie Quinlan was without doubt the most complete and greatest footballer I have ever seen. Quinlan was a sensational mark, quick over the ground, strong, he had a great football brain and of course was the greatest kick of all time. A Brownlow Medal in 1981 and back to back 100+ goals in '83 & '84 were amazing achievements.
His performance in the 1983 Qualifying Final, which we lost narrowly to Hawthorn, still ranks as the single greatest individual performance I have seen. Quinlan kicked 8 goals that game and a remarkable 5 in the last quarter. The last of these is at the end of this clip, where he puts Fitzroy in front with multiple Hawthorn defenders trying to drag him down.

The other thing about Quinlan was that he would perform in all conditions. Check out the last quarter highlights of this game against North Melbourne at VFL Park. Freezing cold, dark and wet, Quinlan was still marking it like it was a dry day. Superboot kicked 7 this day.

I played in the little league grand final that day( v hawks) for Fitzroy. Chris Scott played was in same team. Lost by a goal to the bombers. Winners got to be a part of the Grand final parade and guest appearance on junior supporters club.(remember that show) Good times indeed.
rusty08 as a 'past player' you are granted automatic membership. That would have been such a thrill. My oldest son is getting a run with his Auskick club at half time in the Essendon v Fremantle game later this season. He is pretty excited about that, but to have played Little League for Fitzroy on GF day, well, that is a whole new level of celebrity.
