If Melbourne wants to pay $800k for Lever, then that is what he is worth. It's not different to someone paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a rare coin or stamp. Just because I believe that is a silly price to pay for such an item doesn't mean that it isn't worth that much. It is worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

Who knows what the cut off point would be? How close does the AFC have to get to what other clubs will offer, in order to make it far more convenient for him to stay in Adelaide, than to uproot and move clubs and home, so that the dollar difference is worth it to stay?

It's the money. Make no mistake, it's always the money combined with the potential money. The potential to cash in on the location like being in the hub of the AFL media for instance.

Crows need to get smarter. If players we want to keep won't sign with a year still to go on their contract we should trade them to the club of our choice for the best players we can get. Or we will continue to be the laughing stock of free trade.

I don't know how many times I have to say this.

You can't trade a player under contract if they do not want to be traded (and the same holds true for uncontracted players too). In addition, you can't trade a player to a club they don't want to go to.

Basically, they are still negotiating and are a ways off OR he's decided to go OR he's still undecided. Otherwise the line of, "The deal will be done soon, don't worry guys." would have been trotted out. Saying he wants to stay at the club publicly doesn't weaken his position at all. In fact it puts pressure back on the club to come to the party.

I imagine it happens all the time. No club bats 1000 when trading or drafting. However, clubs know and accept that will happen. They just hope that they get more right than they get wrong.

Clubs also know that you usually have to overpay slightly in order to get players to switch clubs. Adelaide knew that they were overpaying Betts a little, but also knew that was the only way to get him to switch clubs at a time we were desperate for a crumbing small forward and also needed to get creative due to the Tippett draft sanctions.

In the Tippett example, I doubt Sydney would have got Tippett if they knew they were also going to get Franklin.

We - the supporters - just have to get over it. All this speculation "will he/won't he" is nuts and will just do your head in. Seriously, it's the players' future we are talking about here. They have to do what is best for them. LONG gone are the days of Club loyalty (and that goes both ways). Free agency made damn sure of that. It shouldn't surprise us, nor disappoint. We would more often than not move jobs when the offer/contract length was significantly more than what we are on currently. Or at the very least, we'd entertain the thought of moving. Lever's manager is doing his job. Shopping him around and seeing what's on offer. Then they go to the AFC and say "this is what we are being offered elsewhere". The AFC has their say as to whether we match it or not. And finally, the player decides. This is a fact of life. In many ways the timing is a bugger (with the EBA just being finalised and more money in the pot to lure players).

It was interesting hearing Paul Roos say that he would never play a player if they have already said they are leaving!

In reality, if players knew that was the case then they would simply not tell their club that they were leaving.

So the club is then faced with a choice, does it want to know that players are leaving so that they can plan for it, while still benefiting from that player playing for them now. Or does it want to be kept in the dark and forced to scramble when it gets told at the end of the season that a player is leaving?

Yes, the club could give ultimatums such as, "Sign before R20 or you don't get selected any more." but most of us know how well ultimatums tend to work in negotiations.

Media people (I was going to say journalists, but I'd be using the term very loosely! ) need to fill column space every day and create headlines to sell papers. So even if they don't have any new info, they still need something to take up that space in the paper.

Except from Jake's perspective he can still play footy for 10 years, be closer to family and potentially get paid even more than Adelaide is offering.

The downside is he'd be leaving a club that he knows he fits well into the system, a club he is happy playing for and one with a good chance of success. His new club may have all those things too, but he won't know for certain until he's made the choice to leave. So there is a risk there.

I fail to see how Jake's generation has anything to do with it.

Yep, my take on it based on recent comments from people like Lever and Roo are that Lever wants to stay at Adelaide but, at the moment, Adelaide's offer is too low for him to sign.

So, if Adelaide improve their offer he could stay. If they don't he's likely to go.

Adelaide are likely weighing up whether it's worth paying Lever the money to stay, and what it will cost them in terms of mid-tier players being pushed out, or leaving them without enough cap space to recruit another A-grade midfielder.

I believe most clubs use it. But clubs decide how the dollar value is worked out from all the statistical inputs.

For me, the supposed influence of partners is mostly presented with way too much certainty, and is always accompanied by a nasty 'pussy whipped' narrative. Not by everyone, but a hell of a lot of the discussion is driven by people's preconceptions of gender relationships. It's generally just nutty gossip about the personal lives of people they don't know.

From my side the nutty gossip comes straight from people or a person who should know. So gossip it may be, but it is club level gossip.
Have heard that Jake would love to stay and that money is a secondary factor in his decision compared with the wants and needs of his loved ones.
