Found this recent Twitter feed from the Australian High Commissioner for South Africa, which does show AFL South Africa in operation. He was visiting apparently.
The photos on the feed were taken at the Senwes Cricket ground at Potchesfrom where their Headquarters are located.
The School Sport Australia Australian Football U16`s did tour in January this year to South Africa.

Their web site is not up at present and their Facebook and Twitter pages not updated this year.

For those interested it appears that AFL South Africa under Footywild may have switched to the "Messenger App" in Facebook for Android, I Phone, Win10 Desktop and Win 10 Mobile.
Cannot confirm this. Not into Facebook.

Good find. Is that Nelson Mandela on their jumper????
Wonder what the papers Circulation is in that area. Could not find it on the site.
The football has a logo on it likely to be the League involved, also unsuccessfully tried to decipher the writing on the RH upper above the logo, which maybe Afrikaans.
Noticed the ball likely to be a Sherrin because the Burley Yellow on the Burley web site is paler than the one in the photo.
The only possible thing against the leagues like this one is their relative isolation, which is where coaching the latest methods is crucial, but they must be doing something right to finish 5th in 2014.
We wish them well in IC17.

where coaching the latest methods is crucial,

Coaching methods as in methods or strategies?

One thing I love about the International Cup is the flavour - the different styles, different jumpers different languages.
The North Americans, Western Isles and N.Z. play the Australian stop, prop and possession game.
Some countries play a rugby style game getting numbers at the ball and pushing forward through strength.
Some countries play a very athletic attacking game to get the ball into a scoring position as quickly as possible.
The Australian style requires too much skill to keep possession and relentless switching.
The old VFL style push it forward at all costs works best for the I.C. and those rugby style playing teams
advance quickly when they realize that using the ball (e.g. more passing) can save themselves a lot of energy.
The attacking teams like the PNG, the RSA and Nauru beautiful to watch and very competitive.
Looking at Sweden you can see the influence of handball (the sport) in their play.

We shot a email to the Author/Journalist of the above article giving him some web sites to follow.
Just got a reply - He is going to follow the Lions at IC17 and thinks it would be good for S.A. to have more of our game. We think he would like more variety in the sports scene over there.
He is impressed with the crowds at the AFL and liked the fact we call it Footy.
Might see some articles when the IC17 is on.

Great stuff. Do you know how is he going to follow the I.C. ?

This article covers the official departure of the South African team from Potchefstroom.
They were hosted by the NW405 Municipality which was formed last year. Several local prominent officials were present which may or may not mean anything.
The local Journalist Wouter Pienaar wrote the story. Lets hope he continues to cover our game over there.

Time to discuss South Africa in the IC17 against a background of grassroots problems???? we hear on the grapevine.
This country was to be the shining star in the International footy world, and at one time had a lot of interest from here, such as sponsorship from 4 AFL Clubs- Eagles, Dockers, Blues, Magpies and other sources. The AFL Clubs shown are no longer involved to our knowledge. The AFL still provides sponsorship.
However it appears that their 4 Province National League is operating and other lower level comps are running, so we exactly do not know what is happening.
South Africa is in the main Pool in Div 1 with 10 teams.
These teams are considered to be largely the most advanced in our overseas game A.T.M, and to be in this Pool is a tough gig for some teams.
The South Africa program :
Rd 1 - V Great Britain - Which they lost. Probably this may indicate a slippage from the Lions, because the GB team are partly drawing from a pool of newsish players located in the Regions in England, but it is hard to work out for sure.
Rd 2 - V USA- Which they lost. The US team is a big one and mobile and may have turned the corner with their development. However these IC17 teams should be playing each other annually, and we suppose they will one day.
Rd 3 - V Fiji - The South Pacific team is from a Rugby country, and they tend to be very physical which will bother the Lions.
Rd 4 - v PNG - Perhaps the Mossies will be too skilful and quick at this time and are one of the BIG FOUR at this comp.
To sum up something has happened in S.A. for a team to slip backwards, but they are isolated and have been getting visits from School teams etc. To improve teams must play against better opposition.

I think SA has gone backwards -easily defeated by GB; & won by only 3 points against Fiji, who had more scoring shots.

SA had c.18,000 participants c.5 years ago, FootyWild booming etc. Things have gone quiet.
What has happened? Has the AFL reduced investment?
Why have West Coast & Freo. not had more involvement there?

Relatively backwards.
But you would have noticed the HUGE improvement in G.B and Fiji and guess what, there's been huge investment in Fiji
easily seen in the woman's and of course Fiji men weren't that bad.

It's very disappointing that nobody is reporting the games here and describing what's happening at the grounds
rather than people drawing "conclusions" by looking at results.
Up until Saturday's defeat of USA by the PNG the "Australian" style was defeating the "indigenous" style
which is a reversal of 2014's clashes.

Time to divulge your "grapevine" sources.
Why don't you attend a few games and see for yourself.
Ha Ha you pay my airfares and I will and raise the average daily temps to about Perths.
The grapevine sources are never ever disclosed -Ha Ha.

The AFL is still investing however levels not known.
The 4 AFL Clubs -Eagles, Dockers, Blues, Magpies back in the period agreed to sponsor a Province each to get the game established in those 4 Provinces, which still exist today and a Provincial comp was set up. That comp has morphed into the 8 team National League they have now.
However that AFL Club Sponsorship is well and truly over.
In that period the SA Lions did a tour to WA/NT and played a match at Subi from memory and they were all going well then.
What has happened since then -Have no idea but they are isolated to a degree which affects coaching ideas etc etc.
Frank Costa from Geelong urged the AFL to invest healthy sums over there a while back but that never happened.

AFL investment is 5 million Rand per annum.

AFL investment is 5 million Rand per annum.
With todays exchange rate it equals A$477128 dollars per annum.
We do not know if AFLSA has attracted any local sponsors to add to that amount.
Presumably it is used to cover operating and local Footywild expenses, and we do not know if any monies are left over in each year.
A few of us long time watchers have pondered why no expansion to more Provinces from the present four, and taking a guess it maybe that no more funds are available to do that.
Frank Costa in his proposal to the AFL a while back emphasised the favourable exchange rate for the Aussie Dollar and he was right.
Thanks Footy9`s for the info.
Has anybody found the AFLSA activities on the Facebook "Messenger App".

LOoking at Sth Africa's spanking at the hands of PNG today, you would have to say Sth African footy has definitely plateaued, and that's putting it mildly.

But we have to be honest - the closeness to Australia of places like PNG and NZ makes it easier to have cross-fertilisation than other places.

Even our close ties with places like England, Ireland, Canada and the US make such cross-fertilisation possible (and no doubt, China will soon be in the same boat).

But with South Africa, we don't appear to have those same opportunities. You'll find aussie ex-pats helping out footy leagues in these other places, but my guess is that you won't find too many aussie ex-pats helping out footy in Sth Africa. It makes things that little bit more difficult, such that to get a big jump in quality from where South Africa now is requires a lot of money, probably too much for the one place which has little scope for competition nearby (different to Ireland/England/Denmark and Canada/US, who get to play each other often and that additional competition helps improve the quality).
