If you know his father you might have an idea.

Also 1st rounders = $$$$

Maybe Robert Scott will become the Lavar Ball of the AFL

Just googled and saw 1st rd picks can get $88k p.a. while rookies get at least $71,500 p.a. - hardly much of a difference in the grand scheme of things

Tell that to an 18 year old just out of school!!

A kid with his head on straight would understand that if he's got the goods he should make $3m over his career and shouldn't get too fixated on $10,000-$15,000 in his first 2 years.

Maybe Robert Scott is going to be a bit of a handful...

You are not factoring in match payments. $4300 per senior game.
Higher draft picks are more likely to get those games. My estimate an extra $55900 for Ainsworth , $47300 for Bowes last year. But think its great someone like Spencer picked up an extra $22500 as a rookie - not likely to happen if in a normal injury year.
Draft position counts - in selection - and in likely earnings.

In that case the Cats are likely to be out of the running as they should have a 'win now' team for the next few years so he might miss out on his precious match payments.

He's likely to be our 3rd draftee (or if Lynch leaves our 4th draftee) taken in 2018, so he may have to get in line while we cycle through the more talented players (higher draft selections). Plus with our 2016 4 x top 10 draftees likely to be more ready in 2019 there becomes a critical mass of how many youngsters we can play early in his career.

If maximising dollars in the first couple of years of Bailey Scott's career are the most important consideration for Robert and himself he would be best off going to the Kangaroos - they need plenty of outside run.

Lots of water to go under the bridge - but my thoughts were exactly that - he is most suited to North's needs.
But if he performs for Queensland and Allies and he wants to stay local given family and friends and the Academy - I think he may choose the Suns - particularly if we show progress this coming year.

I think my OP has been taken out of context. I suggested ANY 18 year old would not lightly turn away from $10,000. Not specifically referring to Bailey or Robert. But as Sunraiser has now pointed out, higher draft picks do much better than that. This can even carry through to trade time should that happen, although after a few years, proven performance will be signicant and a '1st rounder' may not carry as much weight without runs on the board obviously.

My main point is, from what I've seen, Robert pushes Bailey to succeed and is doing everything he can to make sure it happens, from his coaching and using his contacts. Nothing wrong with that. I would do the same. Has caused a few 'issues' with parents/other players along the way, but Bailey looks likely to be drafted, so good luck to the kid.

Personally I don't expect him to be an absolute gun (see big Graham for that). I see him more like our Naish ( outside flanker). So 3rd-4th rounder. If he nominates one of the other clubs, no big loss imo.

Suns cannot afford to lose any Academy player we've developed. I'm hoping Bailey will stay with us - especially after all the work his Dad has done promoting our game on the Gold Coast and working as a coach with AFLQ. (think he was U16 mid field coach when Brad Scheer won Alan McLean Medal as best Div 2 player in 2014)...

Further to Scott situation - what have Geelong/ North contributed to his development in last few years ?
Part of the reason I raised issues about his AFL National Academy placement being at 3 clubs (Geelong, North, Suns ) - was because it is not in keeping with how other local National AFL Academy members have been treated in the past.
Bowes, Scheer, and Crossley all undertook their one week club National Academy induction with the Suns . All were subsequently drafted by the Suns. Why is Scott's case different - other than to give a couple of Melbourne clubs a leg up...?

Without downplaying the efforts of Scott with SEQ, developing Brad Scheer aa a player was not one of them.

Agree he 'should' stay with the Suns, but the father son rule has its place, so the unique situation.

Nick Blakey is in a very similar situation. His father, John, only played for one of the existing clubs his son is eligible to join (North) but obviously has a history with the Lions through his Fitzroy days and his initial coaching tenure in Brisbane. Then you have Sydney who have developed him through their academy so Nick will need to weigh up his options over the next 12 months, just like Bailey.

I recall a poster in this thread who had connections at the Broadbeach Cats revealing Robert Scott was very bitter about his experience at North Melbourne and didn't expect Bailey to join the Kangaroos as a result. Then you have Geelong who are competing for a premiership right now so Bailey will most likely have to bide his time in the VFL if he chooses the Cats. Whereas with the Suns he could arguably cement a place in the midfield pretty quickly and play with all his mates he grew up with in the academy.

A couple of years ago we saw Bailey Rice, who was eligible to join two clubs as a father-son selection, choose St Kilda just a few weeks before the draft so it could be a slow burn for Suns fans when thinking about Bailey Scott choosing his destination of choice.

Bailey Scott is over in America with the NAB Academy right now. Has anyone heard which way he might be leaning for his decision later this year? I really hope it's us! I can't imagine North Melbourne are in the picture unless they do a dirty deal under the table and offer him money. I think it's really just between us and the Cats.

Theres been a lot of guys at this stage that touted top 20-30 that dont even get drafted , his needs a good year behind him in NEAFL and QLD , i would seriously doubt he would be shopping himself around at this stage , if all going well we would have to be in the box seat as he would be familar with the players and staff and stay at home .

A guy on the Association Football AFL thread said Scott has gone down to Geelong to play for the Falcons this year.

In between their rants about how the world is unfair and every northern club (especially Sydney) is a meaningless joke, the North board reckon they're in the box seat because Scott is a North fan. Can't say Iv'e heard anything from Scott himself about it yet.

Not the same Bailey Scott, but at least the Cats might get someone of the same name :rainbow:

See i would have thought we were in the box seat because he's living on the coast.

They said the same about GWS’s Josh Kelly last year, offered him the world and he was a North fan and he said GAGF and don’t forget the Davis Swallow was going to North according to them since he was drafted in 2010

Good the club does this , gives some of the academy boys a 2nd chance so to speak , paid off with Maz Spencer , hopefully one of those boys step up.

I was a little surprised that we didn't take more of these boys as rookies, but now I see why. There's a big crop of eligible 2018 draftees coming through the Academy born in 2000, which makes me feel even older than when the club hired a coach younger than me.

Did anyone hear about the Suns trying to poach Angus Blyth from rugby union two years ago? He stands 204cms and had never played Aussie rules before but the Suns were willing to pick him up as a Cat B rookie. Apparently he was really close to signing with the Suns but managed to get a Queensland Reds contract instead while he was a schoolboy at TSS.

I guess it's good to see the Suns are keeping an eye out for local talent in other sports as well as developing their own through the academy.
