Analysing the team yesterday. I'd have to say it was the same skill level as last year if not worse. If anyone is thinking that our midfield will dominate this year, you are kidding yourselves. We have the same core players as last year. Shuey is our only complete player, Redden is not a top 10 clearance player in the league. Gaff is soft and his disposals don't hurt you. Duggan for some reason has remained as a defender, Venables looks ready but I doubt he'll have much of an impact. Possibly Jetta is our most in form player so far.

The defence will save us again this year, and the forward line, which was effective last year but didn't have the supply, has been changed I suspect there will be chemistry issues and struggles with the forward line as we try to integrate Rioli, Ryan and Waterman. Darling has also lost a yard or two of pace.

I'd just like to say that although I really, really, really disliked watching the game yesterday (thought we were shocking and lacked any coherence as a team or any motivation as a team to win, particularly when freo started pushing out in front) I think the outcome was good.

The shocking loss has effectively brought many of us fans, me in particular back down to reality. The Eagles team is now a young side with alot of inexperience and we are now quite a way from our next flag. I also hope that it has brought the eagles team back to reality in realising they just copped a 10 goal flogging from Freo who is nowhere near a top end side. Before the game I had eagles slipping into top 8 and possibly, pushing top 6. I now place them slipping to 10th, possibly with a late season charge pushing for 8th. Think it'll be a difficult year to begin but hopefully we can begin to recreate last years form.

Positives:
- Ryan looks a goer - he presented strongly and seemed to be constantly involved or around the ball. Just needs to polish up his skills and get used to AFL levels. His set shots were off and he didnt take mark of the year yet. Think its just a matter of getting AFL game time and getting his confidence up.
- McGovern continues to live up to his hype - hopefully he can spur Sheppard back to his best as well
- Valuable game time into our youngsters

Negatives
- Our midfield efforts and our forward entries
- Our tackling ferocity and desire to win the football and the game
- Our lack of team coherence in strategy and good ball movement
- Our regular and go to players seemed to be way off from usual standards (yes looking at you Sheuy)
- Jack Darling continues to disappoint me. He lays a good tackle and puts on pressure but otherwise doesnt behave like a good forward and kick goals and take marks

I agree the skill level was particularly down, didnt look like a side capable of playing finals at all. Definitely the wind had some contribution as watching how much the ball curved on some shots was astonishing however still lacked as last year we at least showed some glimpses of smart, clean ball movement going end to end quite a couple times.

I have high hopes and faith in Redden - he definitely let me down yesterday but will work his way into a vital inside cog of eagles midfield. Can see him averaging 25 disposals a game. He definitely has big shoes to fill though with both Priddis and Mitchell leaving.

Gaff is a gun. Enough said.

Redden being a vital cog of our midfield terrifies me. He's horrendously average.

So therefore he's not a mid?
He has many good attributes , I was keen on him , But you grabbed him and we took Crowden , He is strong in the contest , he finds the the ball ( much underated)he could develop the necessary tank to play midfield. This lad is a good pick up .has good goal sense . Be patient with him . I feel he could play 100 + games for you guys

We looked slow and Freo looked fast. Chasing ball and tail does that.

Sandilands makes Freo twice as good than any other ruck.

What is a concern is Freo were without three of their most creative and quicker players, S Hill, B Hill their current B&F and Bennell. If you add these three and take out the bottom three that group looks real fast.

My prediction is that by year end we will see Watson, Petrucelle and Nelson in our side permanently. All add speed and have a decent two way running game.
Bit suss on Nelson atm hopefully he can gain some form.

He's a pure mid like constable however he doesn't have the size or strength constable has abd produced similar results whilst being roughly 18 months older.

Don't get me wrong I wanted Brayshaw but I have nfi why we continue to overlook pyre mids.

So far constable is backing up me wanting him with our second pick very well.

If me as an amateur can continue to produce better results talent scouting midfield talent than an afl club then something is very wrong.

Just redoing a few we forget redden and Shep were excellent in JLT1 as were a few other of our mids.
we had a quiet day with no team effort, our seniors generally treated it like a training run (sadly) it is meaningless unless as a predictor.

If we had picked him we would probably be playing him in a forward pocket right now and he'd be getting about 3 touches a game.

Agree I’ve liked what Redden has done when he got his opportunities late last year ..His game v Port In JLT also showed good signs he was getting back to his best ..

We've been "quite a way from our next flag" for a decade.

The weakness remains exactly as it has throughout that period. The club however takes 2 tall forwards with its first 2 picks and then a small forward with its 3rd pick.

I get that we can justify those selections in isolation but "it's the midfield stupid" should be our recruiters motto.

Tempering expectations is fine but to use expectations should have already been low for a decade, so the weekend should have been no real surprise

Yes, Constable's 0 league games have been very impressive thus far.

If we had of played 3 stinkers I’d be worried but a win against port who were cracking in is a good sign.

The kids played well in the scratchy against an experienced Freo side so two of those games we’ve had plenty of positives.

The game against Sydney will really show us where our midfield is at.

2006 - Freo beat us by 62
2007 - Freo beat us by 40
2008 - Freo beat us by 44
2009 - Pies beat us by 62
2010 - Beat Bombers by 35 , then flogged by port by 78 points
2011 - Beat Hawks & Freo in the round robin games ( Short games) Then beat GC by 37, lost to pies by 26
2012 - Beat Bombers & Freo in the round robin games ( Short games) , beat port by 10 , beat saints by 33 then lost to crows 34
2013 - lost to Geelon & beat Freo in the round robin games ( Short games) , Lost to Pies by 20, lost to port by 6
2014 - Beat freo by 84, Beat swans by 38, beat freo again by 21
2015 - Beat carlton by 31, Lost to port by 40, lost to freo by 19
2016 - lost to crows by a 100, beat GC by 2, beat bombers by 105
2017 - Lot to GWS by 33, beat Freo by 55, beat Demons by 25.

Received a fair few floggings over the years!

Some classic chicken little stuff happening here. Things are never as good or as bad as they seem.

What makes it even depressingly funnier (in a crying/laughing crumpled up in a heap in the shower kinda way) is that the reigning premier just won the flag with a team structure that reduced the number of KPPs and Ruckmen in their 22.

In 2015 (I think) Jack was injured for a while and Fraser played CHF. While he did not kick many goals he provided a strong contest and brought the ball to ground. Hill, Cripps and Lecca all benefited and all kicked goals. The system seemed to work and we were less predictable.
I am not saying Fraser is a gun but he successfully played a role and it was effective from a team scoring perspective.

I was not having a go at McInnes. Really hope that he finds a spot in the team (probably not as a forward or a second ruck) - if he doesn’t then 2011 draft is a total disaster from a WCE point of view. No doubt Fraser played well when he filled in for Darling in 2015. I was merely pointing out that we don’t necessarily have to bring in somebody like Schofield or EMac (if fit) if we want to send Gov forward.
If we didn’t have ruck crisis then there is fair chance that he would have been delisted at the end of last year. Given Schofield’s and Emac’s ages and also the uncertainty surrounding Gov, may be it is worth trialling McInnes as a defender. After all wasn’t he a defender before the draft?
McInnes spent 7-8 on the list as forward\ruckman so if it is not working then it might be time to try something new.

You don't have to prove who you support , With that name he is not a Dockers supporter , I can set up a false profile pretending i am a Eagles supporter , But if i call myself the slime or the toilet you might get suspicious . The shockers was a derogatory nickname for Freo in their early years , He is not a Dockers supporter . if he is he is a F******t
Thanks for the explanation Tiger. I was referring to the part insanity plays in being a Dockers supporter and if pretending to be a supporter had any similarity at all to catch 22.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he would have to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle. “That’s some catch, that Catch-22,” he observed. “It’s the best there is,” Doc Daneeka agreed.

On reflection it wasn't a catch 22 situation.

Surely McInnes has to be a KPF with Kennedy out, and until he comes back. This is not to say that Waterman and Brander aren't bad players but neither has currently enough presence to do the job. Waterman simply isn't big enough apart from being completely inexperienced. There is probably a position for him on a flank with Rioli going down again. Putting Brander there at this point in his development is throwing him to the wolves and he would probably get devoured. If Naitanui returns for the Sydney game which is very uncertain then neither he or Lycett have ever shown much as forwards. So with the available cattle it has to be McInnes. I think they will go with Waterman and both he and the team will get killed. My five cents worth.

Agreed we havent drafted a genuine mid for more than a decade. As someone mentioned before since Judd left it should have been a priority.

I thought partington, koby Stevens, sheed at very least were genuine mids. I could go through the draft and list them all if u really want but I don’t want to.

I think you were meant to say that we hadn’t drafted a midfield champion in a decade. Which are different things.

This isn’t an assessment of our drafting ability but at least get the facts right.
