Not shots for goal. Just have it in general play, problem solved
When teams have the ball they generally move it quickly down the ground over the top and go for a score. Its when ball in dispute that it gets tedious. Who is the clock running against then?

Reduce interchange and move the kickouts to the centre of the 50m arch.

Moving kickouts from behinds further up the field will mean much more space for the team to spread out into as a result it will be harder to zone the whole field. Since the interchange would be lower, it would also make it physically a lot harder to zone for a whole game.

No need to make the goal square bigger, just stop using it for kick ins. Put the man on the mark 30m out from goal, then re start the play.

I'm a fan of this because Buddy will start kicking goals from kick ins at the scg :D

Extending the goalsquare/kick-ins seems to give an undeserved advantage to the defending team.

i.e. The attacking team has managed to get it all the way down their end for a score, and now the biggest kick in the opposition can just launch it all the way into their half from the resulting kick-in.

You may as well just take it back to the centre square for a bouncedown after every behind.

Oh dear god, have I just come up with a brand new rule that someone might take seriously?

Moving kickouts forward might mean clubs prioritize goal kicking accuracy a bit more than they do now...

Part of the problem really is how difficult it can be to exit the defensive 50. It reduces scoring. Aiding teams getting into the largest part of the field and the center of the field will without doubt aid in higher scoring and more free flowing football. Which is what makes AFL a great spectacle

Can we please leave it alone for a few years and maybe it might self resolve. Instead we will inject another 10 rules every off season in an attempt to catch a tail that isnt there.[/QUOTE

Exactly, but what rules that are in place now need to be enforced to the letter of the law. They must remove this crap about knocking it out and play on. Enforce the rules and the game will open up.

Removing the prior opportunity rule will mean players will be reluctant to take possession in congestion and might actually make the rolling mauls even worse. Could get passages where 15 blokes are in a pack just soccering it around.
Particularly because they can’t pick it up off the ground.

Basketball with all it's shot clocks and transitions is probably the fastest moving and scoring sport in the world... it's also by far the most boring.

Yep. One of the few sports in the world where teams don't actually have to work to get the ball into their attacking zone. It's essentially a given.

I have zero confidence that tinkering with rules will improve the game substantially. None of the so-called improvements that the AFL has introduced have done so and many have had "unforeseen" consequences.

If you ask ten experts (past players, coaches, media dudes) what changes would most improve the game, you'll come up with ten different answers, many of them diametrically opposed. At least part of this is because they don't agree on what the game should look like. Everyone has their own views on the good bits and the boring bits.

I don't think the game is in as bad shape as the media would have us believe but, this year in particular, I've found it a bit duller. It seems to me - watching not just games featuring my own team but right across the competition - that games have less flow because umpires are pulling technically correct but often pedantic frees from pretty much every marking contest. When I hear the view expressed that umpires should pay every free that is technically there I shudder that it could become ten times worse. Clearly, if you have rules it helps if they are consistently applied but maybe the game just has too many rules on how the ball can be contested.

As far as congestion goes, I doubt that reducing the number of players per team will do anything other than leave space out on the wings that rarely gets used. Teams will still cluster around the ball. I reckon the only way to significantly reduce congestion is to mandate that every AFL player must also have an external full time occupation and that they're only allowed to spend 15 or so hours at the club each week (outside game day). Clearly that ain't gonna happen.
