I'm not that concerned about not getting a PP - we don't need to stock up on 18 year olds, older bodies might be more useful to us. I hope those that were saying they didn't want us applying aren't now whinging we didn't get one.

That said, I'm intrigued by the messaging that came from Liddle after Carlton's meeting with the AFL. He was very careful to say we'd discussed special assistance more generally, not specifically the PP - do we know for sure that we actually applied for one? Liddle said that once everything has been announced, he'd be in a better position to discuss the meeting - I'll be interested in what he has to say.

If we believe the wording of the AFL piece that they are still 'working out the details' on the remainder of a package, we may get some other kind of assistance to bring in an extra young player. It might just not be a PP.

Repeated in jest by a few posters here, is there actually any reason we couldn't pick him even if/when he nominated for the draft?

Would he need to agree to come to us before picking him, or do we say yep, I want that one?

What are the the actual conditions imposed on us - or is the AFL just making it up as they go along?
I don't think the conditions have been published. Let's keep our traps shut before there's a meltdown and they attach additional T&Cs

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I don’t really want a priority pick. Yes it would be beneficial but only if it were traded for a mature player but realistically, we did this to ourselves. Horrible list management strategies including throwing money at players like Thomas and Jones. A completely inept recruitment department that chose the correct player once in seven years. A board that jumped at shadows and sacked Ratten and brought in a coach past his time that destroyed our culture.

While a priority pick would be nice I’m not sure I can stomach an AFL handout that I’ll have to hear about for years. The constant outcry from the media that we don’t deserve it and that any success will not be of our doing but the AFL’s. I’ve never felt more comfortable about our list even though we were horrible this year. We have some brilliant young talent and need to bring in some older players and avoid injury but for the most part I think we’re on the right track.

IF the AFL give one to the Gold Coast then they’ll have no option but to give us one. I’d love nothing more than to get back to being successful without a handout but maybe that’s just me.

Completely disagree.

Hawks, Tigers, Dees plus others got them and it helped them to where they are.

And while Tigers, Cats can sign the likes of Tom Lynch for FREE and say "well that is the system" I don't really give a shit what other posters say.

We may as well milk "the system" too.

After all I'd rather Tom Lynch than Pick 19 or (as appears most likely) the best VFL player any day.

I.e. Reigning Premiers get best young CHF in the AFL for free - and other clubs whinge because we get the best player in the WAFL/VFL/SANFL????

FMD!!!!!!

If you like long shots, maybe so we could get Lukosius and on trade to Adelaide for a kings ransom? They have 7, 15, and McGovern. We could do that trade whilst retaining pick 1. Im sure there'll be a proviso preventing such a trade but on paper this looks possible atm.
That would be outrageous, love the conspiracy theory and wish it were true but no way.

Fair enough but if it's true that it was announced on Ch7 News tonight that we would be denied a PP, you have to admit, that's a little bit concerning.

True but as we know they report whatever garbage they want just to make news. The Australian football media can be sad and desperate sometimes. Like for instance when they all came out and claimed that we weren't going to apply for a priority pick when in fact we never said such thing.

There's no accountability, especially at this time of the season.

I don't trust the media at all, unless I hear or read quotes from official or reliable sources then I consider football journalists barely better than bigfooty posters.

This time of the year would have to be the worst when it comes to sensationalist nonsense.

Admittedly it doesn't sound good, you wonder what legal grounds Carlton and GCS' have if they are denied picks after clubs have already been handed PP under this system...

Where is the official word that we won't be getting a priority pick?

Carlton and GCS are as strong candidates as you can get for a PP, if it doesn't happen then you could assume that the PP is gone.

If this is the case then the AFL are really building a competition that is increasingly taking resources away from the bottom clubs and giving resources to top clubs and they have an increasingly broken system.

To add to that, the clubs at the top are there right now because they used the system to their advantage. Hawthorn and Collingwood both made out like bandits with priority picks for superstar players that won them premierships. Geelong did hugely well out of father/sons for premiership players, but now that systems been gutted as well. Swans and GWS have profited from the academy system, but the Blues don't get anything like that either. Now that all these clubs are entrenched at the top, they want to burn the ladders that any other club might use to climb out of the cellar. It's sickening, and the hypocrisy ought to be called out by the Carlton board in the media and anywhere else they can.

Bloody oath mate couldn’t agree more!! The system is screwed.
But sos has a great plan and we’ll get there and then I’m going to give new meaning to the word arrogance.

Maybe we will trade a mature ager or two to get back into the draft....now just need to find the player. Cam O’Shea types probably won’t net us a 2nd rounder??

Fine, just need a new law now that prevents free agents from going to the top 6 clubs.
Hard to believe that an organisation that has a draft and salary cap to help equalisation has this completely unfair system of free agency.
For carlton two wins you get vfl players,Richmond a prelim and get Tom Lynch and the AFL award the compo pick to Gold Coast at no cost to Richmond.....Bullshit

Andrew Walker was a priority pick.
Matthew Kreuzer also was a priority pick.

Hawthorn and Collingwood's success with lower draft picks, development and all round better recruiting led them to their flags.

Numb and confused. Hopefully more to come in the 'details' that benefits us, don't see it though. Will be details about not able to select 18 year olds such as Lukosious with state league picks. Just don't get why we were encouraged to apply to only get rejected. Makes no sense at all. AFL truly are spineless and enept if decision was based on stronger clubs whining about it. Very, very disappointing.
