So they must be players that have already failed at AFL level or completely overlooked by every club multiple times, for whatever reason.

Seems more like the AFL trying to sell hope to discarded players than a serious attempt to help struggling clubs.

If anything, it is tying up limited resources on long shots when we already are stretched for player development.
Precisely :thumbsu:

Wish we had a PP just so I wouldn't have to read everyone's outrage on Shiel Day.

Let's take responsibility for our position and not cry about getting the wrong free handout.

Oh so no consolation prize from the McGovern ment?

I'm only asking because you said you've told Aph your source re Shiel RB, but how confident are you in the source?

Not asking to reveal any further details about them btw, just a general comment.

Confident; I’ve even given hidden clues about the source within posts[emoji51]

It’s great that McGovern is coming too.

And I’m sure PR and timing is the most important consideration for the club : note that no one from the club has commented on the mature age pick plan yet.

Jon Ralph has alluded to club positives about this though apparently as well as Shiel-Blues.

Ralph is not the source!!! Just thought I’d bring that up [emoji23]

Agree with you, nobody want to use pick 1 for Shiel this year, but seem to think pick 1-3 is fine next year. Shiel will help our club no doubt but not worth a pick in the top five in either year.
Thats because by next year if we have added the targets we hope to this year in particular Shiel Setterfield and Walsh you could say by using next years first we should have stockpiled enough talent to not need that first pick next year .
We also need to stop thinking/relying on high picks solving all our troubles .
Next year we'll be heading into our 5th draft trade period of the rebuild if we havent stockpiled enough talent by then to be able to give up 1 high draft pick we are doing something wrong imo .
Its then up to development and coaching game time and bigger bodies to begin our rise .
Id also be quite confident that by adding Shiel and others this year having a fitter list and improved performances we will then be looking at addding a quality FA next year which in some ways softens the loss of our first pick .

An underager in Rowell was BOG in the TAC grand final. Like every year there will be outstanding prospects at the top of the draft next year. Don't think Shiel is worth giving that up.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s now time for FA to finish off. Hope we are pushing hard for Gaff still.....

The absolute arrogance of some on here is astounding.

To be a know-all is one thing, to tell others how they should feel/react/behave is another.

Get over yourselves.

Feeling a bit salty?

Gotta hand it to you, RB. No Bluemour drop and run here.

Seeing it through to the end, I rate it.

*only if you’re proven right of course ;)

It would have been good to get a PP in the draft but I’m okay with it. It’s one player. SOS would have had different scenarios worked out and now he’s clear and what will happen. IMO won’t effect the McGovern deal. Possibles were all media speculation which has mostly proven inaccurate.

If we can land McAdam and a good mid it will help our young group. We will still add Walsh and more youngsters

May not effect bringing Mcgovern in but it may effect any other possible ins as they may have committed to Mcgovern so will work to get him in .
Which may alter the outcome of other targets .
I for one would be livid if bringing Mcgovern in without that extra pick cost us a Setterfield Brodie or similar type mid .

Spot on. Trading next years first is the way to go for the various reasons you mentioned.

He is.

Other factors in play over just recruiting another high rated kid including Shiels assistance in developing team and kids, help entice other mature players and the fact we need to start paying someone with our banked salary cap.

What if he’s a Tim Kelly or a Sam Menegola or a Lambert? Up to us now
Why set the bar so low?

Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis, Ben Brown...

If we back our ability to draft, then the two (Sam Edmunds saying this morning on SEN it's access to 2 players) could potentially be worth mid-late 2nds. If, for arguments sake, we assume it's the equivalent of pick 29 & 30, well that's 1282 points which matches up to pick 12.

Not quite the same, but still a hell of a lot better than our current 4th and 5th picks which are mid 60s-70s. Even the players we land would have gone at say 30 and 40, that's the points equivalent of 1058 which is about pick 16.

I still don't get the massive melts over this. Our draft hand is better now than it was yesterday morning.

Yesterday we had 1, 24, 25, 65, 73 (not bothering with factoring comp picks, academy bids, shuffling or whatever) which is 4640 points.

Today we've potentially got 1, 24, 25, 30*, 40*, 65, 73 (again, not bothering with the extras) which is 5698 points, 1058 or 23% more than we had yesterday. Also a pretty decent spread across the draft. And I think most are pretty confident we'll have one or more future picks in play.

Even if we only get one player rated at about #30... we're still better off than we were yesterday.

That could translate to something like Walsh, McGovern, Brodie/Scimshaw/Butters/Taylor/etc, McAdams, Collins, SOS late smokey, Silvagni, then Fasolo FA (perhaps even Libba or someone?) and maybe we can turn our future 1st or second into some permutation of Shiel/Setterfield/Scully/etc.

And think of how upset Chris Scott must be. Just imagine his facial expression when he heard the news. Surely that makes some of you feel better?!
