Is it OK if we tell others what we think?

OK, I think the AFL have taken an each way bet by giving us a meagre consolation package when their practice, in the past, has been to offer no worse than end of first round picks to clubs that have been largely uncompetitive for a number of seasons. The compensation offered us is, historically, at best the equivalent of a late second round pick and they have also dictated how we are to use it. Seems to me they have even prevented us from bundling their meagre offering with anything in order to improve our chances of actually getting the players we have identified as needed, instead telling us that "this is where you need to look, we know best".

I also think it is painfully obvious that they have caved in to the demands of other clubs and their supporters. Interesting to note that this is the same organisation that refused to listen to those same other clubs and their supporters in allowing * the number one pick after the disgrace that club forced on the League and footy in general and, in their manipulative use of FA compensation, have engineered picks (and subsequent trades) that are questionable at the least.

Again I think, on the surface, that their leaking of these details to certain sections of the media and failure to get on the front foot and announce their decision is also an absolute disgrace. If they are going to make decisions like this they should, at least, get on the front foot, own them and come clean on their rationale.

I don't subscribe to the view that they have a vendetta against us or any other club. I just THINK, and have THOUGHT for some time, that they are a makey uppy organisation that can't lie straight in bed.

It is evident to me now that we must continue on the path we are on in spite of this rabble, and not rely on any assistance at all from them.

That is what I think.
You can think what you like, I happen to mostly agree with you.

There’s no need to tell others how to think though.

Unless I’m lost and this is the Carlton BF cult?

Most people aren't angry about not getting a PP. The anger comes from the Club being pressured by media and the AFL into reconsidering our original stance on the PP, only to be made to look like pathetic fools and publicly humiliated. Its the AFL's arrogant, almost dismissive attitude of 'Here, have some C Graders, that's what you need. You've got enough talented kids. The good players only want to go to the top teams, not you'.

:clapping:

So Adams is the bi-product of Pies getting a PP in 2005

A couple of things to consider:

Our past inept list managers, overpay for Thomas, giving the Pies a 1st round pick, so they don't match, I call that good management by the Pies

Carlton being able to trade, mature age player picks for picks/players

Control what you can, don't worry about what you can't

Lonie and McAdam for small forwards this season?

Unless Lebois and Polson are going to carry the load for the season...

Hypothetically, let's say Hawthorn are hoping to pick up a certain state league player with their 2nd pick (thirty something). They could remove the uncertainty and trade that pick to us for the player.
Not sure if I prefer this approach to just taking the players ourselves.

The AFL have made the state league ruling because we have said we need bigger bodies at the age group of 23-25.
They don’t expect us to ontrade these players and I wouldn’t be surprised if they stopped us, if we tried too.
I would seriously doubt clubs will trade for these players.

  • Carlton and GC to get "access" to mature age state league players who can be on-traded to other clubs.
  • No priority picks have been 100% confirmed or denied by the AFL, but media speculation is that they won't be awarded.
  • GC likely to get Pick 3 for Lynch, and whatever they can secure for May in a trade.
  • RoyalBlues has assured us Shiel will officially request a trade to Carlton today, and that the club is still confident of landing McGovern.
That's about it.

  • And me foofa valve busted again

Fair to say that there was probably not one person on this board that felt we were overpaying for Daisy. All I recall was euphoria.

Perfect summary.

With the addition of we'll look after our Franchise clubs if their player(s) depart to a top team, even if they player is ranked below Cale Hooker and Rory Lobb as a forward and they pay him less at the team he goes to.

That is not fair to say. There were plenty calling it lunacy, even without the benefit of hindsight. He looked cooked with a very dodgy ankle.

To his credit he has worked his guts out to make it a better deal for us, but it was a stinker at the outset.

Big bodied state league players?
Tim kelly and Lambert are the names that keep coming up,can anyone name anybody else that can make a significant difference straight up?
Mihocek from last year would have zero impact at carlton.
We’re dreaming if we think this will help.

It's beholden on us to find the next exploitable loophole, and to make the most of it before the thing's closed.

It's never enough to just be better. Got to play smarter.

Totally agree. North exploited the ten year rule beautifully back when it lasted for virtually 5 minutes in history.
Unfortunately right now the clubs up top in last few years get to exploit the present free agency version that gives them a free hit in some sense. Us down other end of ladder out of luck at present for getting a gig there. If it shuts down just as we become a contender will be spewing.

Mick Warner in the HUN an hour ago wrote that Carlton and Gold Coast have each been awarded access to two state league players, which they can either keep or on-trade. Given it's an updated article this morning, hoping the tradeable part is correct, as it opens up possibilities.

Also that Carlton has released a statement - “As a club we’re appreciative of the assistance provided by the AFL and it is now incumbent to the club to facilitate list management outcomes in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club.”

Time for SOS to earn the big bucks :)

Edit - Also interesting that in the hard copy HUN this morning, Ralph and Warner article says, 'Mitch McGovern has told Carlton he wants to find his way to Ikon Park. And the Blues are confident they can secure him using their new draft allowances". This part is not in the Warner online HUN article.

Think that is a generalization

We short changed Betts, 50 K a year, yet offered Thomas considerably more.

Staggeringly list management decision

SOS, may have also offered similar to Betts, but I doubt he or any other team, would have offered Thomas the deal he got

Haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure mature age players are drafted in the 2nd and 3rd round pretty much every year. They were a key component to hawthorn's 2013-15 team.
We’re talking about late developers, not failed recruits/delistees.

Tell Lukosious will give him an extra 200k per year for the first two years if he elects not to participate in draft and stays a SANFL player and we take him with pick 1 in the PSD.
