End of Year Report on the FUTURE of Collingwood FC. All this talk on the draft has made me look back and see how our kids went...

Heath Shaw; Been the most consistent, VERY exciting prospect. Next year, or year after, midfield gun. But definitely the Buckley-type midfielder in a few years to come.

Travis Cloke; Our best young forward, a fight between him and Sean Rusling for that mantle of #1 tall forward for Collingwood in years to come. Both very exciting prospects. The 'Rocca/Tarrant' duo of Collingwood in 3-4 years, hopefully they are more successful in winning us Premierships.

John Anthony & Daniel Stanley; Both foggy prospects who have shown some on and off form in the VFL. JA has been getting more raps and is more likely of the two to debut this year. As some have spoken, he seems like the Clement replacement in a few years, should be interesting to see how he goes about his game in the next 18 months in the AFL. Stanley has also shown some potential.

Ben Davies & Scott Pendlebury; Midfield-trainees, both have shown that they are capable of handling the pressure cooker of the AFL. Pendlebury especially is looking to be a future midfield star of the AFL, hoepfully. I see Davies as going good aswell, no matter what has been said recently. Dane Swan would be in this category aswell.

Harry O'Brien & Nick Maxwell; The backline of the Collingwood FC along with Jason Cloke and JA in 2-3 years. Will be unbeatable if live upto potential shown. Julian Rowe, possibly.

Dale Thomas; Last but not least. A James Hird-type player (Not saying he will be Hirdy) He will be that magical player who pops up every now and then to win matches for us, not as consistently as Hird but in that sort of unstoppable when firing mold. No set position for this one, can be a midfielder one week, a loose backmen the next and then move up and play as a phenomenal small forward after. Chris Egan would be similiar, but more of a forward, relief midfielder.

What does everyone think?

2008/2010/2012;

Backline; Rowe, O'Brien, Anthony, Maxwell, Cloke
Midfield; Shaw, Davies, Swan, Pendlebury, Stanley
Forwards; Rusling, Cloke, Egan, Thomas

Couldn't have asked for any more of Heath Shaw of Dane Swan this year. Both improved out of sight. Will be two top liners for quite a few more years to come but you're dreaming if you think that Shaw will ever be a "Buckley type midfielder".

ATM T.Clokes kicking at goal isn't much better than Tarrant's. 6.12 is an ordinary effort. Needs to improve. Rusling is lightning on the lead but then what. Rusling hasn't impressed me much at all in 2 seasons. His 2nd efforts are non existant. They're both still young enough to have plenty of room for improvement.

Have only seen JA and Danny Stanley play once in the VFL. They both looked ok but their form wasn't crying out for immediate senior selection. Its a big jump to the next level.

Ben Davies finds the ball ok but his kicking needs a lot of improvement.

Scott Pendlebury impresses me. I like the way he stays cool in traffic. Will be a great in and under type and will definately benefit from a preseason.

Harry O'Briens a player I think will improve dramatically. I'm not sure if he's best suited in defence, his tackling leaves a lot to be desired but he shows natural attacking flair and might be better suited further up the ground.

Nick Maxwell is the reason J.Cloke can't get into the side. Thats a good thing because he can move the ball out of the back line and hit a target. His handpassing however is the worst at the club. Would prefer to have an up and coming key defender in the team with a bigger frame though. We need a gorilla to play on blokes like Hall and Gherig.

Julian Rowe will be lucky to stay on the list. He turns the ball over too much.

You're right about Dale Thomas. He WILL be a matchwinner. Not week in week out but he's certainly a player you go to the footy to watch. Reminds me a bit of Brett Burton.

Chris Ego frustrates the crap out of me. He has so much speed and talent yet is a lazy player. A couple of times during the Elimination Final I felt like jumping the fence, grabbing him by the ear and dragging him to a contest. Against Carlton I saw him stand still while an opponent ran passed him into the forward 50. One player who really needs to lift his committment to achieve his potential.

I wish I could share your optimism PieLeBo but i think our young stocks lack sufficient depth at the moment. We're still suffering from poor drafting during the 01-03 periods. As at the end of this year the following players will be...Buckley-34, Wakelin-32, Burns-32, Clement-30, Rocca-29, Licuria-28, Presti-28, Lockyer-27, O'Bree-27. Those nine players are (barring injury) the first nine picked each week. Most of these retire within the next 2 years. Morrison and Caracella retire this year.

We really need to draft/trade well over the next 2 seasons to contuniue making finals. How do you think the youngsters will compare in 2-5 years time?

Buckley/Shaw, Wakelin/Maxwell, Burns/Swan, Clement/Anthony, Rocca/Rusling, Licuria/Pendlebury, Presti/T.Cloke, Lockyer/Davies, O'Bree/Stanley, Caracella/Thomas, Morrison/O'brien.

Don't know who's contracts run out but Rowe would be the first to go followed by J.Cloke. Davies might survive if a senior player like Burns decides to call it a day.

I will argue this to the death.
Heath Shaw is going to be the next Nathan Buckley type midfielder at Collingwood, I didnt say player, no one can match Bucks any time soon. But Im talking about midfield. Heath Shaw has the smarts, the on-field leadership, slight courage, reads the play REALLY well, so can find space, and his disposal isnt worst then any of our future midfielders. He will be a captain of Collingwood before he retires, in my eyes.

on top of this heath shaw i personally can not see him developing much more either with swan, they will deff be handy players for the pies however, find you gun midfielders else where these guys will remain 2nd teir players. imo

My team of the future is:

B: O'Brien Anthony H Shaw (v-c)
HB: R Shaw Maxwell Iles
C: Thomas Stanley Johnson
HF: Cook T Cloke Rusling
F: Didak Tarrant Davis
R: Fraser (c) Swan Egan
Int: Nicholls, Davies, Pendlebury, Ruckman (???)

Stanley to take the Burns/O'Bree type role.
Thomas/Egan free-roaming roles

Thoughts?

Rusling, Egan, T.Cloke, Pendelbury, H Shaw, Swan, Maxwell, Obrien, these and a few others that play for willy that i havent seen will be our future plus some where out there hopefully we can pick up a fair dinkum ruckman. Rowe plus the two clokes to go and the midfield set up is getting found out so quality midfielders are a must for drafting, its not all doom and gloom but smart recruiting and maybe a trade will do for our future. P.S Morrison, Hall, maybe Walker could be looking else where.

Arn't you guy's forgetting Martin Clarke, Scott Reed any more Trades and Draft Players will get!

I can't see how you can be so sure these guys are going to be superstars? One has played very little footy and the other is like 16? We should be focusing more on our current players.
