Agreed with the rest of your post more or less, but I don't with this.
Our issues in 2016-17 have more to do with slow gameplan to allow for our poverty of good users, moving the ball slowly in order to avoid turning it over. Our issues this year were quite different, and have more to do with midfield poor disposal into our forward half (either a hacked kick from a clearance, an inability to get someone free of congestion, or our inability to maintain a chain of disposal from one end to the other) than they do our poor forward craft. Fix that - make stoppage plans that work!!! - and improve our ability to move the ball from back 50 to the forward line faster than a sloth doing a crossword, and we'll be well on our way to improving if not our volume of entries (although that'd improve too) then our quality of entries into forward 50.
Sure, we need to improve our forward craft, but as with everything you cannot have all time greats at either end if you can't get the ball to or away from them. Need to work on moving the ball without stuffing it up, and need to come up with better plans other than Cripps wins the clearance to win the hard ball.

100% Correct. When Kennedy is retired Judd will still be kicking goals for us. Also the impact Judd had on Crippa and many other players and the professionalism he brang to the club . Also at the time Carlton sold out of number 5 jumpers at the annoucement of Judd signing. Also Fisher and Dow idolised Judd and he has had long talks with them. Funny enough the week after Judd spoke to Dow he went out an put in his best performance to date. Its not all just about what happens on the footy field. We won that trade and are still winning it and will be winning it for a long time to come.

Given our choice came down to Walsh or Lukosius, which player would have more of an immediate impact and which player has the highest ceiling?
Walsh is a mid and he plays his best footy in that position. He has been playing under 18s all year. I’d say in 2019 we could expect him to have about the same impact as Dow had this year, i.e. 12-15 possessions on average. His hurt factor early on at AFL level would be medium.
Lukosius has versatility. He can play anywhere, i.e. Wing, Half Fwd, Half Back. He’s also been playing against bigger bodies in the SANFL this year. At AFL level Lukosius is also probably good for 12-15 possessions per game, but his possessions would have serious hurt factor. His kicking is absolutely elite and could be used from day 1 to setup plays and hit forward targets. For these reasons I’d say Lukosius is potentially a more valuable player straight out of the box.
As far as their long term potential goes, I don’t reckon you could split the two.
Of course with Lukosius you have the go home factor but the club has to back it’s culture and select the best player available. I mean look how many interstate players Carlton has already. Would you pass up Cripps because he’s from WA?
So Lukosius to my mind is a better selection for where Carlton is right now.

Another thought I had regarding us dealing with GWS on Setterfield is that we got it done quickly with no fuss. As did we with Adelaide. I think this is also a deliberate strategy by SOS, considering GWS are still battling * to get the Sheil deal done. It will hold us in good stead for next year when we will have a crack at maybe Kelly ... or Greene?
I would rather Josh Kennedy and Trent Cotchin for the last 10 years on field than Judd. That's what we could have had.
I said 66:33 in WCE favour, still means Juddy has been great for us, but Kennedy and Cotchin together have been greater.
Mind you, I think the same will be for Shiel, Walsh & Setterfield (similar to Kennedy+Cotchin) will be better than Shiel (Judd). Just one man's opinion.
Was Dow as prolific a possession winner as Walsh at 18's?

I also tend to look at what he brought off field at the time. We had some 'rat-bags' who were leading the kids astray. Judd comes in and instantly the kids (and mature aged players) all follow his example off field, stop the piss-ups, start taking training seriously. He lead by example, not to mention the number of memberships he would have helped to bring in. This stuff is priceless and exactly what we needed at the time.
I guess anything is possible, especially with what GWS are currently wanting to clear/cleared off their list
Shiel, Lobb, Setterfield, Scully, Patton, Finlayson
The only thing having Cotch and Kennedy in the team would have done is hasten our demise.
You think either of Cotch or Kennedy would have become the players they are today in the Carlton environment of the last 10 years?

It really isn't a simple thing, assessing the value of that trade. Their side of things is far, far easier than ours is, because most of what Judd brought to Carlton was off-field. Willing us to victories that would've been unobtainable in his absence is about 40% of what he did for us, and while it's a shame our list management was so poor while he played for us I'd still make the trade every time.
Just, Fev instead of Kennedy.
Highlighted by the Champion Data crew. His game-saving last quarter intercepting mark Numbers against Norf as an example (plus the last round vs us, doesn’t really count though).
All club propaganda has been as a forward however with swingman versatility.
I got a good feeling about this one.
IIRC Dow only played 2-3 TAC Cup games.
In terms of talent, I rate Smith/Walsh ahead of Dow at the same age

Between the arc play has been worse than defensive and forward line work - totally agree. I didn't refer to what is required to fix this - because the draft so far hasn't delivered anything that will - so far. Pretty obvious the kids understand how far back they are in terms ability to play genuine midfield role for 4 quarters. That is why they are all back training already I would guess - good on 'em for doing so - but a pre-season or 2 doesn't make up for lack of required physical attributes - fitness isn't size. Other teams brushed off attempted tackles of SPS/LoB/Fisher/Garlett/Murphy/Polson at will...Carlton has amassed a great collection of classy short people in comparison to most opposition midfields.
Ironic - since people on here regularly chastise the Club for having 'too many talls' ...no, Carlton has too many smalls actually - in the wrong places.
