If you buy into each club’s pitch, the Dons are a better fit for Shiel age-wise. Shiel would likely be 28yo before Carlton start threatening, which would still be a good situation for Carlton, but maybe 3 sunk years not such a good one for Shiel. The Dons timeline not so stretched.
He’s also got a lot more players around his age whereas at Carlton he’d have graham, jones and Kerridge in his age bracket. And they aren’t gonna be here much longer.

If we can pick him as a delisted free agent, I don't see why not.

If you go through our list next season we will have around 25 players under 22. We also have a group around 29-35.

Unless something happens I reckon (apart from Pick One) we will be trying to bring in mature type players

Just went for a beach walk myself, had a listen to Macquarie Sports along the way.

Not sure who was talking but he was saying that both GWS AND GCS having salary cap issues because of the big contracts they have to offer players just to retain them.

GWS clearing the decks to ease the issue, but apart from Tom Lynch, GCS haven't seemed to offloaded much. Maybe Scrimshaw to Dawks. If the Hogan deal falls through which means May potentially staying at the Suns another year, will they need to jettison a few others in the trade period?

I got no idea, but would like to think it could open up the door for a deal for Martin :thumbsu:

I would rather try snaring Brodie out of there if anything.....perfect for our needs

Edit with a few GWS’ers.
I saw that Roughead's going to Collingwood.

Real possibility we could go to draft with One (Walsh) then 69, 71 & 77.

Given the appointment of Agresta and what SOS did last year getting Garlett, is there some similar options out there? We have never seemed the type of club to pick up a good state league player like a Grigg or Nelson with late/rookie picks

So I log in and read some tripe about an AFL conspiracy that they stopped Dylan Shiel going to Carlton.
Ok. Let's break this down a bit and look at now this could happen.
Firstly, let's look at how many people need to 'kept quiet' about this
There's Dylan himself and the Management team representing him.. let's say 4-5 people. Then there is Dylan's 'dyed in the wool Blue' family.. hmmm another 5-8 people. Then there are the Giants who apparently wanted to deal with Carlton, another dozen or so.
Then there is SOS and his team. The same SOS who stares down all other recruiters and takes no shit from anyone... except the AFL so it seems. About another 15 staff.

So I make that around 40 people who would KNOW and not one whistleblower amongst them.

If I actually believed in that tripe I could be equally creative and say that the AFL had a quiet word in Sheil's ear and told him they'd make it WELL worth his while in a few years, and that he should tell No-one. That's just as plausible.

Now one knows, so why even spin a scenario to prove one way or another...

That used to be our better picks in the rookie but lesser results in the draft.
Garlett, White, Ed, Levi - could have been more.

Colquhuon was mentioned at one point.

On this and Shiel, people probably underestimate the importance of this in terms of having friends at a club.

I see people talk about reasons a player would go to a certain club like for money or success, but I reckon having mates is a big factor... I'm sure any of us would like a workplace you enjoy because of the people there.

Manager said devon Smith played a part in the decision.

At Carlton Shiel doesn't really have many players his age...at essendon he does.

The thinking is less about trading Pick 1 and more about using our future 1st to get Pick 2, and in turn seeing what opportunities arise to trade down. It would take something outrageous for us to part with Pick 1.

Walsh is a superstar, and every club would take him at #1. There is no trading down from 1 and still getting him.

So even if the SA clubs had pick 1, they would take Walsh?
