Who would he select at 3 6 apart from Smith

If that trade is done, I expect GC to of course take Walsh, but pick 2 is the one I am unsure of at this stage. So if we had 3 & 6, I believe SOS would take any 2 of Lukosius, Smith, B King, Rozee. I would be happy with a combination of a small and tall with those picks

All of that is exactly why the thing in any shape or form isnt going to happen in my view. Its like shooting oneself in the foot. I wouldnt swap grannies magnificent apple pie for two fruit tarts of unknown flavour.

For a 2 year player Weits has already made it and, he wasnt drafted on position, he was drafted on talent and most judges had him as the standout.
The real mistake that occurs in these endless pages of opinion is to tie the form of the club to erratic form of players that are only just starting out. Ergo...we lose, therefore all the young draft choices are duds.

Keeping this in context and not making it about Weitering per se. It's more about being wary of buying a utility.
Weitering wasn't drafted as purely a third back tall. There were bigger ambitions for him and so they may yet eventuate, but there are now at least, some signs they may not.

I'd sooner get the best pure mid than someone who is perceived to be able to do a bit of this and a bit of that.
I understand the love for players to be multi-faceted, but for now at least, I side with getting players you see becoming elite in their field and complementary to the foundations that have already been built.

remember the days of the team being released with players names on a drawn oval? and they stayed in those positions all game? unless they came off.....to stay off? starting possies are arbitrary guesstimates these days - that's not all bad but I too would love a rock solid mid

I agree wholeheartedly. Its why I dont rate Smith anywhere near Walsh despite the bits of scoreboard excitement.
However I think its perilous to lock any player at 17-18 yrs of age into a defined space.

And running out to listen to the coaches address at the onfield breaks. Cigarettes and oranges and vehemence aplenty.

To my mind there's 3 standout players.
Walsh , Lukosius and Rankine.
If that trade (1 for 3&6) were to happen , you could expect GC to take Walsh and Lukosius with 1&2.
If for whatever reason Silvagni doesnt like Rankine , i reckon GC can keep their magic beans and we'll keep Walsh ...
what if sos has already headed off to market to see what he can get for the family cow?

You're not wrong. I remember Bortolotto being named on the bench a few times and spending most of the game there!

So Smith then?:D

And when a centreman, hardly left the square

If it is to be then fine, although I'd be initially disappointed.

I may well be proven wrong, but I just don't see the level of quality in Smith, I do in Walsh.
My viewing sample sizes aren't huge, but I can't help seeing Walsh becoming quite a, if not dominant, reliable and stabilising force for the CFC.

The fit is ideal for my liking and would have been made even better had have we attained Shiel, as some of the pressure comes off the younger guys in Dow & Walsh in the formative years, but that wasn't to be for 2019 but may yet become so, for 2020.

On those AFL things, Walsh is described (in a silly fashion, I know) as The Iceman, which is just what I like about him; Clever, Cool, High football IQ etc.

It happens on all boards that often two camps pop up, but somehow here more than most
Last year we had three camps and mostly two arguments. It was either LDU vs Dow, or Cerra vs Dow.
It all largely though amounts to nothing more than just lively debate and and a little board filler. :)

I don't think there is any problem on using a number 1 pick on a defender. Rance and McGovern would both easily justify number 1 picks. Weitering was talked up as a ready made "once in a generation key defender" (yes I know) so McGovern and Rance levels it probably what we were expecting.
Weitering will be a fun. He’s only 21. Will be as good or better than Rance/McGovern. Look at Rance up until 21 - poor kicking, poor decision making, fell over in contests. Weitering lost confidence getting thrown back-forward-back but finished the year well with improving form. KPD just take time.

some bad habits remain just that

I know you are a fan of Walsh, like many others. If we keep pick 1 and select Walsh, none of us will be disappointed.

Personally, he is not the best player in this draft, nor the best midfielder, but he is a very safe selection and MIGHT be the best fit.

If we had picks 3 & 6, I doubt SOS will select Rankine

Let's say Gold Coast take Walsh and Lukosius (1 & 2).

Who do you think we should take at 3? and then at 6 (with guesses for what Saints and Port do).

If Port are thinking of Bailey Smith we need to take him at 3, and then maybe we take Jye Caldwell at 6?

I don't see a need for either King brother; I am bullish on both Weiters and McKay whilst I still think we are weak in the engine room.

I would take Smith at 3 and either Rozee, B. King, Caldwell at 6

Remember drafting is not about the short term.

Weitering a KPD and I see Macreadie as a Westoff type.

King would be a replacement for Jones, for a guy at 200+ cm, can play both ends and has a sub 3 second sprint, will be a very good player
