I don’t think it’s that simple Crush. The quality of the people involved means much more.

I’m of a strong belief that this group are driven to take us back to the top. They know it will take time BUT if they keep persisting and improving it will happen. They really believe they are building something and so does the club. They are all on the same page. The addition of Russell has possibly taken it to a new level.

It’s hard to put into words but they understand their position and what it will take. The pre season has shown it after such a tough year. The tougher it gets the harder the resolve to improve and make it to the top

I really believe that once they get the experience and win a few games they will take off. GWS went through a worse period and then took off. Our culture is as good, probably better.

Walsh is the classic example. Nothing phases him and he will trust himself to keep pushing until he gets there. Our group is much like that

Can't discount the human Psych mate …. it happens.

I thought I’d have something definitive on Willo today but donuts....sorry..I’ll keep prodding.
One little piece of info I did get though is that one of Russell’s first impressions of our playing group is that he thought there was a mental fragility amongst some of the younger and senior players. Not sure what that means though.

Its a really interesting topic. Paul Roos spoke about it many times at Melbourne. Hopefully we win more games this season to hopefully build some confidence in the group.

Has Walsh been playing the last 4 years in a side thats going no where with no finals or success in sight?

At day’s end, sport is 10% ability and fitness etc, but it’s played 90% above the shoulders.

Loved reading Judd’s book, about the state of mind a player needs to be in on match day.

Don't say stuff like that, i was cut down a little while back for mentioning that talent was important in comparison to what's in between the ears.

I don't agree with that.

O'Shea, Mullett, Graham and Kerridge were unfairly maligned for Carlton's short comings on a regular basis.

It was unfair on them. Graham was a back end pick, Mullett was delisted from his original club, O'Shea came from the VFL and Kerridge was only a fringe player at best in his time at the crows.

These guys were unfairly placed in the spotlight because we decided to trade out our most talented senior players in the likes of Tuohy, Gibbs, Betts, Waite etc.
Your point in relation to O'Shea, Mullett, Graham & Kerridge is valid. They were all on a hiding to nothing.

Of the latter 4 you name, only Tuohy was voluntarily traded by us the other 3 chose to leave & the last name should never be mentioned on our board again, unless of course it is in reference to premiership player Vin Waite.

Tuohy we lowballed for some idiotic reason.

We made the best of the Gibbs situation.

Waite we didn't want to give a contract longer than one year even when it would be clear that we could have used some of his experience in getting through this transition period.

Betts was fobbed off after Mick choose his mate Daisy. One of the worst mistakes made by this footy club this century.

Or just go back to being the VFA.
In the ideal world, but the reality is that only a handful of the teams would survive financially if they were to return to a standalone VFA competition.

Coburg, Frankston, Casey & the Northern Blues would probably not survive & it would be interesting to see how Box Hill would go minus the Hawthorn alignment, with the demographic of the Box Hill area having changed significantly in the last 20 years or so.

I would assume all of that would be in the considerations. But the old VFA is a very resilient thing and has survived all kinds of changes over time. I think they would adapt and re-metamorphose. One thing for certain though ..right now clubs like those have no identity at all. They are hybrid experiments and its a failure.

If winning mentality can cause a loss of confidence does it extend beyond the playing group?
