Think glaring obvious is Marshall instead of Pierce.
Think the glaring obvious if you want to ruck Bruce , Josh Battle has to play forward .
Think the glaring obvious is you can’t play 3 small forwards
Thinking the glaring obvious Acres & Clark have to play in the midfield.
There was a passage of play today where we won the centre clearance, and Bruce, who was in the ruck, received a handball and kicked it long into our forward line... which only contained small forwards. Result was a rebound.
Having Battle in the forward line as another tall target makes sense if they want to persevere with Bruce as the 2nd ruckman.

Just a serious question how many posters went to the game & watched it live? Kent made numerous leads & wasn’t honered repeat efforts & posters want to drop him & Wilkie took some telling marks down back they stay in.

I sat behind the goals, Kents first two shots were OOTF. He looked slow and loose. Was like Mav without the running.

This is exactly what I was saying before the game; with Bruce in the ruck, our only “tall forward” is someone shorter than some midfielders (granted, with a big leap). That is not conducive to bringing down marks from quick clearances, and also makes it more difficult to get lead up passes.

I wouldn’t mind leaving Battle to keep working in the backline, whilst bringing Marshall in.

Acres should be brought in, and perhaps Clark.
Long could be pulled for disciplinary reasons, whilst Dunstan underwhelmed, as did Kent with his wayward kicking.

Perhaps something like
Out: Long, Kent, Dunstan, Joyce/Wilkie
In: Acres, Clark, Marshall, Brown

Agree on underdone players but all sides are doing it in round 1 probably because the VFL hasn’t started yet & practice games aren’t hard enough.

No disagree , with Stkilda we selected wrong team today , concession was seeing Richardson playing
Lewis Pierce at Full Forward , continually kicked down the line or completely sideways because they
had no tall players to kick to , continually kicked 30 metre kicks expected Players with the height of
J Lonie as lead up players ..result ...turnover ...further result goal to opposition.

Young would be stiff not to get a gig if Kent and Long come out.

My guess is Dunstan and Wilkie out. Acres and Brown in.
The Kent pass to Gresh was pinpoint. I wasn't at the game so I can't give an opinion on Kent but some others who were thought he went OK.
Long made a poor decision but I think he did enough to keep his spot.

I have to agree with all of this. I think adding Clark will help so much with ball movement. We did okay at times but others not so much, so adding in another attacking player will help.

I think Marshal needs to play. I’m actually hoping Longer is not to far off. At least with him you know we can break even on clearances.

In: Acres, Clark, Marshall, Brown

Out: Long, Mckenzie, Dunstan, Pearce, Battle/Wilkie
In: Young, Clark, Acres, Marshall, Brown

Sorry, Mckenzie and Long have to come out after the shocking performance, both gave away stupid free kicks and not good enough yet. Pitty one of Battle/Wilkie needs to come out.. as both of them played alright..

this Long out talk is misguided. He did some silly things, but from where I was standing he looked to do some pretty important things too. He also looked completely cooked early into the second quarter, so he'll be better for the run. Parker and Long up forward is the dream, don't mess with it, just give them time.

Brown, Acres, Marshal IN
Kent, Dunstan, Pearce OUT

(I'd get clark in there too but it won't happen)

Battle swings forward to replace Kent, Marshall to ruck, Brown FB

Jeez, Essendon will be under some pressure after getting flogged today. Not a bad time to get them.

The changes will be interesting. Brown will come in, but how they'll switch it I'm not sure. Don't see how Wilkie or Joyce come out. Maybe Battle back up forward? Will be very interesting come Thursday night. Suspect Acres comes in too but no idea who for. Marshall for Pierce is a must I'd say.

Very excited for the match.

We rotated Long, Parker and Gresham through the forward line always leaving one of them one out. It was one thing that stressed the GC defenders, they just buzz when they get anywhere near goal and add frenetic forward pressure. Long was like the overzealous big brother to Parker too, he was looking out for his mate as the GC defenders were getting physical with him to slow him down.

I'm a naturally upbeat person, and I said before this week that I was more worried about the GC game than the Essendon game, but I'm now officially worried about the Essendon game. Consider the similarities to last year - round 1, we just knock off a Queensland team that's the wooden spoon favourite on our own deck. Round 2, we come up against a team that has had it's pants pulled down interstate in week one.

*PS I just posted in the autopsy thread that Battle needs to go forward, but b/c I didn't post it in this thread, it's clearly not a Sandra.

Seems generous on a Saints win. I really think we have a good chance; Essendon were atrocious today. Run them into the ground.
Get on my friend!

They are shite and they are Essendon, which makes them Super Duper Shite!
Despite all the negativity on here today, We won a game where we played one quarter of decent footy and inspite of the some
Of the most blatant rorting by the umps without anyone really having a fantastic game!

That's a game we clearly would have dropped last few years, but somehow still managed to hold on against a pretty fired up
and talented young team who had been given more than a sniff by our wastefulness!

I may even take us by 25+ :sunglasses:

Essendon will cop the mother of all blowtorches from the media this week.

As stupid and unscientific as it sounds, in the Melbourne fishbowl, this nearly always translates into a win for the team receiving the blowtorch.

The only hope for us is if Essendon are really even worse than we realize and /or they’ve stopped buying into what their coach is selling (which looked a distinct possibility from what I watched of their game today).

Taking the above into account, I’d say the blowtorch wins out and we lose but we are not without hope at all. It’s a tough league to predict nowadays.

These Essendon distance covered metrics are really interesting.

I didn’t see much of their game but how can such a difference be explained?

Could it actually be down to fitness differences in the 2 sides? Surely most clubs follow a similar preseason program?

Was it down to game plan? Essendon didn’t get much of the ball and weren’t so interested in running both ways?

Or did the heads just go down early and they stopped trying?

McKenzie was a liability against Swallow who was on one leg. Also Savage did not have any meaningful impact. Geary if he wasnt captain would be another I'd be looking at phasing out as his turnover are atrocious.

Out: long/Kent, McKenzie/Savage, Pierce, Wilkie/Joyce/Battle
In: Acres, Clark, Marshall and Brown

We will get done by 7 goals.

It's a tough one to call. Essendon will be a wounded animal and will be dangerous. I would gratefully accept another one point win and think it will be close. Saints by circa fifteen - which would be an excellent result.
