Yep

Just look who is missed from the weekend

Williamson KennedyCuningham Setterfield Schumacher Goddard Fasolo Kerr Phillips Lobbe Garlett Lang Stocker Macreadie Charlie TDK

We also have Finbar BSOS Cottrell developing

Sides never actually play their "Best 22" and for good sides it's different every week. It's so important now to have depth and a group of 30 plus that can step up any time. IMO we are getting there and that is a great sign
I’m very eager to see Stocker to observe his awareness and speed of decision making and quality of disposal under pressure in the Seniors.

Best 22 is becoming irrelevant now.

It's about having a best 30-35 and who is fit, in form and what is the best combination at the time. We are getting closer to that situation
To me, it definitely feels like the tide is turning with our list. For the first time in a long time, when I’m playing Match Committee in my imagination, I’m struggling to fit players in, rather than struggling to fill spots. It’s a seriously welcome and refreshing change!

However, and although it’s best suited to the list management thread, my only concern is that we seem to have more mids than we can accommodate moving forwards (especially if we succeed in securing a mature Shiel-type at the end of the year), and nowhere near enough natural small forwards (only a few that spring to mind, and some of them appear to be made out of glass). But perhaps I’m missing something? Anyway, I’ll revisit the list management thread to see if I can allay my fears.

Maybe he's got a few nicknames.
On the Kruezer interview, he referred to him as Big H.
I don't get what we call him, as long he keeps playing like he does.
I'm sticking with The Flying Scotsman. It's what Lou Richards would have done.

I think we're a long way still from not having a role for a big bodied on baller. The problem I have with Kennedy is that I'm not sure he is that talented big bodied mid we're looking for. It worries me that he is fit enough to be an emergency but doesn't seem to be wanted in a team that had lost four on the trot.

I don’t think we’ve seen a fit version of Kennedy yet, I haven’t seen enough to be convinced. The only change I’d be looking to make this week is Cuningham for Polson.

The week after, assuming we are looking to make a change, I’d select Setterfield before Kennedy.

When does Charlie Curnow get a game, in three weeks maybe?

Charlie Curnow may have had sluggish preparation for whatever reason the pre season was not exceptional so his performance has been a little dull.
He’s blessed with natural ability and enormous endurance.
Let’s give the younster a break he’s learning to cope with being an emerging AFL star not easy to do. If he’s ready to go play him, just may turn the corner with the new positive momentum on field.

Before we all get too excited and start having long hot baths with each other, just remember we beat a very ordinary Bulldogs team. Actually surprised me how backwards they have gone and how the media is not jumping on them. They never looked like winning on the weekend. The Hawks will be different. We need to ensure they do not jump us early. We will not score goals as easily as we did against Hawforn. Their thug coach will target P-S on the weekend big time. Just hope he does not lose it.....Clarkson reminds me of Little Finger....

Bolton: 'Levi, you were absolutely superb on the weekend. You moved around the ground well and took some spectacular marks. And your set shots for goal are hard to look past. As a reward for your efforts, the match committee and I have come to an agreement that you will make way for Charlie.

Casboult: What... why?!

Bolton: Well he is a green shoot. A part of our exciting future and... well......................... you're not!
Bolton: Levi, you played a good game on the weekend but Charlie is fit to play this week and as discussed last year there will be times we can’t squeeze you into the line up, but there will be many more opportunities to play senior footy this year if you maintain that standard of play.

Levi: No sweat Bolts. You have been clear and open with me about the direction of the club and I’m happy to contribute in anyway I can, so if that means playing with the NBs I’m happy to to go back there and help out the young blokes.

Bolts: You’re a legend Levi. That’s what being bound by Blue is all about.

His first 4 weeks of the pre-season/round 1 were as good as anybody in the team and his first half against Richmond was certainly as good as anybody in that team. One can argue his attributes all one likes, but 4 weeks of high-quality football is 4 weeks of high-quality football.

I feel very strongly about Cuningham's role in the team because the evidence is there if one is willing to look at it fairly. I'd be stunned and annoyed if he isn't named in the AFL team.

Don't think Kennedy has a role this week. O'Meara, Worpel, Shiels, Howe, Cousins and Morrison aren't going to cause us much trouble on the inside. Hawthorn will, though, hurt us on the spread and with their kicking, so we need to be very mobile defensively.
Cuningham not best 22? Maybe, but are Polson, Gibbons, O'Brien, Casboult all who played last week?
I don't think that's the point as much as; Will this player give us more than that player, for this match in this particular role.
That's the question that needs to be asked.

Kreuzer came back through the VFL and Marchbank didn't. All that matters is whether they're good to go or not........and the above.

Kennedy? Didn't look like an AFL player to me last Saturday.
Would be somewhat surprised should he be called up, just to 'protect' Cripps.
Cripps will need support but I dare say he's still relatively fresh with only 5 games down for the year.

Again I will say, I see Cuners as best 22, but as yet, he has yet to establish himself, that's not an opinion, it is fact

If Russell/MC, believe he is ready now, great

What I prefer, is at some point the weekly revolving door of ins and outs needs to stop. Lose and we want the axe to fall, win and we target the lowest possession count

Most players should be getting blocks of at least 3 games, or so, at any level before considering a change, it is now more about team continuity rather than just one player, playing well or poorly for a game or two

I think Cuners is best 22, but he has not played in a month

Surely other players would be ahead of him for selection at this point. I would rather he return via the VFL
I have him and brackets as our points of difference players......

Get cunners in !
Hopefully he gets a decent run at it from here on in!

Out of curiosity what do you see his role being? Will he be playing half forward and pushing up into the midfield? Or will Cuningham be playing predominantly as the deepest small forward with JSOS pushing up on the wing from HFF?

It's not about that at all. It's about selecting the best squad for the opponent at hand.
Statements like, 'Don't change a winning team' make little sense to me unless of course the spread, balance and quality of players are already in place.
This isn't a game of reward an individual just because the collective had the win. What does that really say? It says, we'll wait until we lose and then we'll make the necessary changes. You've now started a cycle of being reactive and not proactive. It's not a good cycle at all, as you always have to be aiming higher and not simply being content with the status quo.

VFL player review: Round 3

This has been dropped in the NB's thread but I think it may be relative and certainly more visible here.
Big wraps on Williamson & Macreadie here....and by default wraps on their management to get them to this point.

Charlie needs to come back to earth a bit and become more of a team player. The time away will do him good.
Cunners in for Polson would be my only change.
Surely you have just imagined that, or have you come to this conclusion after watching his 2 full games this year?

Plowman impressed me last game with his poise - but somebody needs to run the message to him that he needs to stop trying to break every tackle that comes his way.

Don’t think Ed will be going anywhere RB. His possession count is lower this year but he’s playing a different role too. I think the seniors in the team are hear to stay to offer support for the youngens.

I think there's a decent chance Ed gets squeezed out of our best 22 by the end of this year...certainly by round 1 next year.

High half forward and mid is what he was playing before his injury...was actually used at quite a lot of centre bounces.

Whether we change his role slightly due to jsos being in the team, gibbons'emergence as a mid and the fact our centre square combos of last week destroyed the dogs, we will have to wait and see.

Part of me thinks the only change should be - as many have offered - Polson OUT for Cunners, who deserves his spot back, but Charlie... man, if he's fit - get him in.

I don't think Cas should be dropped after that performance so I wouldn't be against giving Charlie a run in the mids/wing for LOB, who probably found himself in the bottom rung of performers on the weekend.

Yes we'd be tall, but Charlie has the running capacity and a shake up may spark him into action.

IN David Cuningham, Charlie Curnow
OUT Cam Polson, Lochie O'Brien
