I feel like Dahlhaus cheated us.

Phoned it in.

Man management at the Dogs is a real issue. Just seem unable to get the best out of diverse personalities like Dahl, Stringer, Libbba (17 phoned it in), Adams etc and they just end up rissolled or in the twos.

Don’t think the club can do much about Stringer not being able to keep his dick in his pants. The Dahlhaus one does stand out tho, wtf happened between 16 and now?

Still yet to work out why we need to move someone on coz they are a pantsman

Laughable that we think we are a moral compass if clubs moved every player on that cheated there wouldn’t be enough to field 22 players.

Yes there were other issues but I always thought we just put him in the too hard basket and didn’t really try.

Looks more and more likely he upset Bev and that means your out at our club.

Dahl phoned it in coz we threw him on the trade table at the end of 17 and then weakly denied it.

Just seen that Melbourne v Richmond is now a permanent fixture for “Anzac Day eve”, so another marquee/stand alone game for them on top of Queens birthday & Dreamtime at the G.

“Equalisation”

Our supporters don't turn up in numbers unless on the back of a flag and sometimes finals. Our club doesn't have much resource to pull its weight, didn't even turn up for pre good friday hospital help

Supporters need to accept club has it's faults on this too.

Performance doesn't help crowd numbers.

About the first time I agree with Hocking, even though part of it is the AFLs doing...

THE AFL may look at recruiting senior club figures as part of a push to shift public perception around umpiring.

While football operations boss Steve Hocking is cautiously optimistic about the effect of the widespread rule changes so far this season, he is increasingly worried about the commentary around the umpires.

Hocking said he would talk to the AFL Coaches Association about potentially recruiting some of its members to be part of a campaign.

"We have some genuine work to do in that space and it's not within the nine games on the weekend," Hocking said.

"It's how umpires are being talked about, reviewed constantly within games – critically.

They do an unbelievable job ... we need to change attitudes.
"It's an industry thing."

Hocking said it is becoming an urgent problem in the game and added that it was not a matter of making umpires at the top level full-time.

He said players are "super-smart" at exploiting the rules and this puts even more pressure on the umpires.

"If we want a genuine funnel of umpires coming through, I think we need to change our language," Hocking said.

"It's bloody tough to get people to sign up to be an umpire."

This is obfuscation by Hocking. Most criticism we hear is not of tbe umpirires but the difficult job they have in interpreting such crap meaningless or just open to interpretation rules.

Remove hands in the back rule - brings umpire interpretation and error back in.

Contact below the knee rule is a farce. A player can simply run through a player on the ground get him in the head and fall over and get the free. Idiotic. By all means penalise players who jump on the ball and dont get it out or who slide into peoples legs dangerously but FFS dont penalise the guy going for the ball who gets hit in the head by a players shin.

And the ruck nomination is a complete waste.of time that delays the game and makes the ump look like a knob.

Fix the rules Hocking, and make an umpires job easier that way you dickhead .

Completely disagree. Most anger is directed squarely on the umpires. I've never heard a fan yell abuse at Hocking for a call or heard some nuffy on bigfooty blaming Hocking for a loss.

Yes it is partly of the AFLs own making, but umpire abuse is rife throughout all levels of sport in Australia.

Seems like you don't completely disagree if you accept it is partly of the AFL's own making.

No-one at the game is going to think carefully about the causal chain of legislative incompetence and then yell abuse at an AFL exec who probably isn't even at the ground. The game moves way too fast for that. The umpire is an immediate and visible personification of authority for fans to vent their frustration.

Is that fair on umpires? Of course not, but what BRWB is suggesting would at least go some way toward alleviating the anger and frustration with some of the illogical new laws that go against a general sense of fair play.

Having said that I have sympathy for umpires and I do think the Hocking initiative to minimise abuse has merit. Let's see how it plays out.

The difficulty is always going to be that fans will still want some way of venting - at umpires, players, coaches, etc. It's an intrinsic part of footy and I don't see how you can stop that. The risk of direct measures is that they might make the whole fan experience at the game even more controlled and antiseptic than it has become in the last 25 years and would quite likely keep fans away. So Hocking's less direct approach makes sense.

I agree there must be limits to venting, but the AFL must be wary of being too heavy-handed. Take the passion out of the fan experience and what are you left with?

Should have been clearer. I Completely disagree that most criticism isn't directed to the umpires.

OK, I'm with you on that as far as match day responses go. Especially at the ground.

People do think a bit deeper about it during the week though. Apart from the odd individual (eg Razor Ray) I don't think there are many umpires who are individually demonised once the fans go home. Next week it's someone completely different who cops it.

IMO fans do understand that the laws are complex, ambiguous at times, difficult to adjudicate and subject to relentless meddling and re-interpretation (even from one week to the next!) by the execs of the AFL. That doesn't stop them giving an umpire a blast, of course.

I agree that a lot are better during the week but I think the damage is well and truly done by then.

Umpires are harder and harder to find and a lot has to do with attitudes and the way they are treated by fans. This is not just in the AFL, local sports are natoriously bad with fans and parents constantly abusing umpires.

But I will also say I have read on these forums numerous times, about how the umpires cost us (or Hawthorn, or Sydney or...) the game.

Imy point was if Hock wants to make umps job easier, fixing the rules is a good place to start.

There's no way any rule can be interpreted correctly 100% of the time, due to the 360-degree nature and speed of the game, individual player and team styles, crowd noise, how individual umpires perceive the game in progress while trying to obey micro-management from AFL house. It's amazing they get anything right. #freekickbulldogs

Anyone else think that this game- if you removed the first 15 mins or so - would be a contender for worst game in a long time? Big build up to a prime slot, start of Anzac round and there have been about three goals in over an hour of footy. It’s been shit to watch.

I agree, but after last Sunday, I think we can keep our heads down on this one.

We’re not being given multiple standalone, marquee games. At least our shitness is hidden in lesser timeslots.

Pros and cons of being an “irrelevant” club. How badly would Freo need to beat us to warrant priority conversation on the footy shows? 100+?

@ the game.

Wtf happened to Oliver? He refuses to kick the footy.

Dees only run one way
