The rule is 17.7.2 if you wanna look it up.
Ive got no problem with the free kick, could have even called it a push in the back.
Wasn't a standard speccy, was essentially an uncontested mark except he put his studs in someone's back.

I dont know how the tv vision was as i guess it depends on the camera angle, but it was right in front of where i was sitting and it didnt look like it was anything like a Toby-esque flying grasshopper kick, thats why everyone was going nuts.

McDonald jumped and Howe kicked out his foot straight out and put his studs in his back.
I don't see why anyone is upset about it to be honest. Very rarely is a speccy taken by raising your studs like that, it wasn't like he jumped on his back, the action seemed unnecessary even if it was only instinct.
Everyone lose their minds when Greene did this in someone's chest last year, not sure why it's different in the back.
If people cant see the difference between a Toby Greene eyes on the player full front on kick to the face of an oncoming opponent and Howe going for a leg up speccy from behind eyes on nothing but the ball and the leg was up for momentum (and still not enough force so that the opposition player fell forward to the ground) then i dont know, obviously they are happy with the over officiated over-sanitised rolling scrum that the games become.

The only reason for the leg up is to push out his opponent. This is not going to ruin the speccy. 99% of overhead marks are taken without having to throw a leg out like that.

What a disgraceful decision against Howe. This isn’t soccer, it’s not just studs up is bad full stop. It’s been a mark for 150 years and the rule bought in still allows for this mark to be paid.

This decision was a load of bollocks. This was nothing like the Greene studs up idiocy. What is going on with this game? The AFL have had a very poor season, they are under siege and have lost the plot completely. The umpire shouldn't be blamed for this one, the rule is insane!
Ridiculous. The 'Greene' rule was brought to stop front on using your boots studs to fend off a player and potentially injure them. Where in this incident was Howe 'likely to cause injury' according to the rule?? The decision yesterday was not in the spirit of why this rule was brought in.
Cant wait for the next one when a player steps on someones shoulders to take a hanger but because his stops were up it will be deemed a free kick to player used as a ladder. AFL you are wrecking this once great game, bit by bit.

Didnt say I liked the rule but the mob rampaged over TG for a legal move, they changed the rule and now the other penny drops.
We all did try to warn you when everyone was saying the rule needed changing

Reading "sprigs" is giving me anxiety.
When hearing about the rule I was under the impression that this style of mark was illegal, but after reading the rule, It is so vague.
Don't see it as a bad thing to stop this kind of mark but for gods sake change the wording of the rule

I wonder if Jerker Jenkins had a sore back after that mark? That looks pretty clear to me that Jezza's footy stops would've made contact to the lower back area and upper thigh? If the AFL provided clear information at the start of the season concerning the rules, including clear examples on the DVD, we wouldn’t need to be having these discussions.

"studs up" is #AFLidiom bastardising the association football (soccer) term encompassing the sliding dangerous tackle which usually perpendicular to knees. Sure there will be non-sliding examples.
As usual AFL fucks up new rules, the sliding and taking out legs/knees should be going through the knees in the perpendicular, or a minimum an egregious dangerous tackle like Andy Cole versus Simon Colosimo. It must be through the hinge scaffold of knee, not travelling in the same direction.

AFL bastardising the Seppo basketball idiom "spotting up" too, which referred to a specialist shooter running through routes around screens to get free and open looks, like Rip Hamilton, NOT the player with ball and passing Richard Hamilton the ball.
foot is up with sole, when the athlete about 2 or 3 feet further back and cannot reach (with knee) the other (usually) opposition when he attempts to mark the ball at a height. Honestly this makes me laugh, the same people complaining about this are likely the same ones complaining when we punish people for the result of a high bump (more if concussed etc). All it takes is for someone to quickly turn around after realising they are under the ball and boom studs in the face. Surely we can all agree we don't want to see that? Let's get that action out of the game...easy
