On Ratts does anyone know the truth behind his sacking is it true he didn't listen to other assistants as that's my only concern with him coming back as senior coach

What's new. :)

We can look at Ratten and blame him for a lot of things, but really - It's us.
If proper systems, hierarchy and reporting aren't in place, things often turn out for the worse.

We threw a newbie of a coach a free reign and Ratten took it all on. Too much work for one individual.

It would be interesting to compare the work load of a head coach in 1995 to one of today.

I actually thought Rats was hard done by when he got the sack I remember the yr he got the sacked we
Had a shocking run with injuries that yr and I recon we should of gave him another yr and he probably would of evolved with our game plan imagine if Richmond and pies sacked Hardwick and Bucks early on when they we're struggling with the game plan/style

We could have put some better systems in place as once you've handed over the keys to the city, it's not easy to take them back.

Ratten was ultimately hard done by and the perception was that he couldn't take us to the promised land.....but maybe the next coach could.
That worked out well.

It's always been a tough job, but it's all relative to what the opposition are doing.
We used to have captain-coaches. The captain was also the coach, but that was amidst a very different landscape.

I just don't like the current coaching set-ups as the coach is often left with way too much to do, unless one has been in the system for a long time and has the knowledge, respect and authority to delegate and even then, one has to have the full support of the executive. Get all that in place and your chances of a long tenure in coaching are far higher.

This is exactly why I do not understand peoples reluctance to have a coaching set up which consists of a mature senior assistant or coaching director. Roles and reporting lines should be clearly defined. You have to have the right person in this position no doubt and whilst I don't have a view as to who this is, nevertheless I believe the concept is sound. Someone without alternative motives that you can freely delegate to without concern and someone that can act as somewhat of a senior mentor or sounding board often works very successfully.

Whether it be Roos or Richardson or whoever, I believe we should seriously look to implement this structure. The role of coach involves a lot of different moving parts and like corporate Australia, having the right executive team around you that are fully invested and directed towards a common goal is the way to go regardless of the level of experience a coach may have.

there are more listed players these days, more coaches, more support staff... more sponsors, more members, more media outlets and responsibilities..

Guessing there are more games and the preseasons are longer.

the head coach - rightly or wrongly - becomes the figurehead for most of these things.

See - I think it's those other games that will make or break his chances.

Beat West Coast in Melbourne, but lose to GC and St Kilda...? That worries me. Looks a lot like an opposition who got complacent and a Carlton who can't be bothered putting in when they expect a win.

Smash GC.
Beat St Kilda.
Knock over one of the others.
Don't get beaten by more than 3 goals otherwise.

I'd also suggest that he needs to ensure we don't cough up another 5-6 goal headstart in any of our games, regardless of result.

While giving up another 5-6 goal headstart would be a worry, it wouldn't mean his papers are stamped if we were able to fight back from it like we have so far.

Lose 2 or even 1 game by 6+ goals though would hurt his chances imo, even though every single club experiences those, even the top clubs.

Wonder if there's any chance Voss comes across in a senior assistant role should a top job not be forthcoming...

Definitely a big possibility i would have thought...he's been at Port for 8 years, may think it's time for a change and some new ideas/experience on his CV.

Can see the club being interested in him for that role if he misses out on the senior gig.

While it might be fine to have a mentor, it can also make it hard to do your job if someone is looking over your shoulder and effectively second guessing every decision.

Interesting stat on 360 last night. Last year, Dees only won twice against the top 8, lost 6. This year won 0.
They were good at beating up on s**t teams.
But even putting this year down as a shocker, looks like they were very over-rated.

Goodwin will be under massive scrutiny from Round 1 next year.

I assume that's just during the regular season?

They beat Geelong and Hawthorn at the G in back-to-back finals and looked very impressive while doing so.

What you want, then, isn't so much a mentor as someone to nod and agree or shake their head and tell you you're a moron occasionally.

Basically, we should just give the next coach a magic 8 ball.

Low level rumour from someone at work

-Voss said he would bring Wines with him

David Teague - The CV

Taking a closer look into our current interim coach for some context into his career

Playing career:

Played 83 games across 6 seasons for North Melbourne and Carlton.

In 2004 at Carlton he won the John Nicholls Medal as the BnF winner and also won the prestigeous Afl Robert Rose award for the Most Courageous player in the Afl.

Other players to win this include: Gavin Brown, Glenn Archer, Jon Brown, Rory Sloane, Luke Parker, Paul Kelly, Luke Hodge, Joel Selwood.

Coaching Career:

In 2007 Teague started as a player/coach for the Northern Bullants and a development coach at Carlton before becoming Full time coach in season 2009.

The Northern Bullants made the GF in both 2009 and 2010.

From 2011 to 2013 he was the defensive line coach at West Coast.

They finished 5th for points against in 2011 after the wooden spoon in 2010 and 4th for scores against in 2012.

He then spent 2014 at St.Kilda before moving to Adelaide from 2015-2017 as the forwards coach.
Adelaide was ranked in top 3 for scores for in all 3 seasons:

2015 - 3rd
2016 - 1st
2017 - 1st (made grand final)

He was then appointed as Carlton forwards coach at the end of 2017, before being introduced as the interim coach 5 weeks ago.

He currently has a 3 win 2 loss record and since taking over Carlton is ranked in the top 5 for:

Forward half intercepts
Points from forward half intercepts
Points from forward half chains.

Carlton in that time rank equal 7th for goals scored per game with an avg. of 12.2 goals per game and in the past 5 games would sit 8th on the afl ladder with a solid percentage of 104.4%
Just saw this posted somewhere on a govt forum...:cool:
