I don't think any club will ever actually match a RFA bid. It just won't happen. They might threaten it like Adelaide did with Danger (I don't think they'd have matched it in the end, despite the chest thumping) but no club will risk being stuck with a player who was willing to walk away and give absolutely nothing back to the club. I think it was something that was included in the CBA to give the appearance of not shifting the balance of power too far away from clubs.

I reckon friendships is one of the most underrated reasons players will choose a particular club.

You don't hear it mentioned much by media and posters on here...they always refer to money and premiership chance. But i think having friends and players around your age at a club would be a really big incentive.

We know he's best mates with JOM and Hawthorn have a lot of players around his age.

We on the other hand do not. Will play a role in his decision i'm sure. Just how much is the question.

I appreciate your point on the appeal of friendship, but the cynic in me finds it hard to beleive that a player like Coniglio (for example) would turn down significantly more money from say Carlton/St. Kilda to join Hawthorn and play with JOM.

He can take his cash from us and see JOM outside of footy if they live in the same city.

Probably the surest sign of all of that a player is joining a new club (Probably even moreso than a club announcement and press conference with said player); Patrick Cripps is now following Coniglio on insta.

So am I. :p

Think this has merit, although thinking back to the Dangerfield situation i wonder how Adelaide managed to squeeze pick 8, a second rounder and Dean Gore out of Geelong? Arguably they did very well then to get that haul for someone who could have walked away for free. Though the system was new back then.

I do think part of it may be the players' wishes. Danger is a star and wouldn't be surprised if he basically told Geelong if he were to join them, he wanted his old team to be compensated decently and not screwed over. To appease him and get him over the line, Geelong agree. They still know they're getting a good deal. I think it was also so Geelong didn't have to pay huge overs for him $$$ wise, in the end they were only paying him about $800k which was seen as under market-value.

From what we hear about Coniglio i highly doubt he'd want to leave GWS high and dry either. Would not be surprised if he makes a similar request to clubs vying for his signature. It seemed strange for Matthews to publicly declare they wouldn't match, which would only make the efforts to poach Coniglio go up even higher, which is the opposite of what he would want. Unless there's already an agreement that they 'won't match' but they would orchestrate a trade like Dangerfield...

Surely he’d feel right at home here with old mates Plowman, Marchie, Setters and Kennedy? It’d almost be like he never left. Maybe we could throw in JSOS’s sister to seal the deal?

You're right, he can.

I don't mean to say friendships is the no.1 factor or even top 3, but just a bigger factor than most fans would attribute to it (which generally seems to be next to nothing). IIRC Devon Smith played a reaonable role in getting Shiel to choose Essendon.

Well we don't know for sure if our offer actually would be 'significantly' more than Hawthorn's...it's possible we're talking $900k vs $1.1million.

Yes $200k over 6 years sounds like a lot, but if Conigs isn't driven by money he will still live very well at $900k and once you include tax the gap closes a bit.

Cogs to Carlton just makes sense.

This is a once in a life time opportunity to set yourself up for life.

Carlton would be offering 1.2 over 6 vs GWS likely 800k over 6, that is 2.4 million difference.

Carlton are poised to be as successful as anyone over the next 6 years and you get to play in front of big crowds.

I wish I could just morph into his body and sign the contact.

It would be great if he joined..unfortunately my 'family' source suggests Hawks if he did leave. They've been hovering for years.

But things change.. it wasn't too long ago Shiel was signed, sealed and delivered as a Blue and Setterfield only wanted Bombers.

Get the jersey ready, he's coming!
Wow this started early last year we where all stalking who Shiel was following and who was following him, then we had the what he liked on Instagram period

Anyone heard that Tippa is putting off contract talks until the end of the season and that we are one of the clubs circling? He will most likely stay and is just trying to worry Essendon into giving him a big pay day but still interesting.

No inside info, but article from The Feral Scum

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti’s decision to hold off talks with Essendon will likely pay a healthy dividend as a trio of Victorian rivals register interest. The Western Bulldogs, Carlton and North Melbourne have all asked about McDonald-Tipungwuti, with the market hot for dangerous small forwards who can kick goals and pressure. But McDonald-Tipungwuti is still likely to remain with the club that handed him a rookie-list chance as talks on a new deal loom.

Note: Bolded by me for emphasis.

Always found it weird that clubs circle in these instances. Surely a direct approach would work better.

Once at a bluelight disco I threw a packet of Samboy chips at a girl to express my interest in a slow dance and potentially some light petting...didn't work.
Not PC. Should have thrown a packet of BBQ shapes, now there's a game changer.

As you say it was early in the process so you could argue teams and players were still trying to figure things out and how the whole process works. I think if it were done today Adelaide wouldn't get the same result. They might still foster a trade, but I don't think they'd have got as much.

These days the moving in FA is seen as much more normal and ok for players to do. I have a feeling that a player strongly wanting a trade instead of FA will be very unlikely, it doesn't happen in any other sport and it's only happened once in ours.
