This is where conventional cricket fails. We need to do something ridiculous; give David Warner a bowl, ask Smith to bowl, get Head to bowl. Something, anything, to change the status quo.
Sagacious advice.

Lambshank does it, good thinking with the change of angle, spinning in etc.

Lyon was too easy to defend and too predictable.

Yup, Paine's decision making as Captain has been a lot better in this test.

Great effort. Back from the brink. The disappointment could have struck us down. I’m rapt. I’ll remember this as one of the best.
This is part of why I object when people bring up Australia's terrible record in tight games. The scorecard will show that we won by 185 runs, but what it will fail to capture is how close we came to utter destruction, again.

Leach and Overton - were we still captained by Smith and coached by Lehmann - would still be batting, because under those two we were one dimensional, conventional. Faced with grit, determination, conventional cricket can only tell you what should work, not what will. You need to use your head, need to think, and you need to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Paine did what Ponting and Clarke couldn't. He's retained the Ashes after a tour in England.

A shout out to all my fellow cricket tragics who have stayed the distance despite the time difference.

I’ve loved the game since I was a wee one. Back yard cricket, street cricket and French cricket. I even played it for a season and demonstrated some potential. However I was in love with footy and playing cricket involved too many blistering summer days. Those days were better spent at the local swimming pool and getting sunburned.

My clearest, earliest memory of Ashes cricket was the Australian tour to England in 1968. I was captivated by the radio commentary (still am) and knew intrinsically that this was something worth winning.

Now I’m a Victorian so the names that mattered to me then were the likes of Bill Lawry, Ian Redpath, Paul Sheahan, Les Joslin and Alan Connolly. I don’t think Stacky was in that touring party.

The Poms had Boycott and Edrich opening. Derek Underwood was probably pretending that he was a spin bowler and Knotty must have been the back stop.

We probably got rolled but I didn't care. There was always next time.

And here we are in 2019 with a new generation of Ashes Heroes.

I love this contest.

Robbo’s diary note for today.

We won the Old Trafford Test Match last night by 185 runs. It went into the last hour but I never contemplated an outcome that didn’t require hard work. Australia now leads the series 2-1. We’ve retained the Ashes. Now we want to win the series. The last test is back in London at The Oval and starts later this week.

It’s been a patchy performance in a number of aspects however there has been some silver lining as well.

Smith and Cummins are ranked number one in batting and bowling and both have played at that standard.

The other bowlers have been great as well. Particularly Lyon and Hazlewood.

The batting in large parts has been disappointing. Wade made a very important ton in the first test which contributed to the win. Marnus Labuschagne has been a revelation. Warner, Harris, Khawaja, Bancroft and Head are no certainties to be part of the test team going ahead. Plenty of spots are up for grabs.

Another point of difference has been the catching. Australia has been better than England in that regard.

Apart from Lords and Headingley (and only for a session in both cases) I think Australia thoroughly deserve the 2-1 lead.
