They aren’t actually. He plays smaller. Is more aggressive offensively. Scores goals. And can intercept as good as all of them as the spare when allowed.

Carlton will not be a successful side with Plowman, Marchbank, Weitering and jones all playing in the same side. Which is why Newman plays a role.

Try fitting this together for 2020 for me:
Jones
Weitering
Plowman
Marchbsnk
Docherty
Newman
Simpson
Williamson
SPS

If we play 4 talls and two smalls we will remain Irrelevant for a very long time.

There are 7 defenders picked in our 22.

The first 5 are easy:
B: Docherty, Jones, Plowman
HB: Marchbank, Weitering

They are not '4 talls'. Jones and Weitering are KPDs. Marchbank the 3rd tall/intercept. Plowman gets the shit jobs (Dusty/Cameron/Grey etc. etc.)

The rest of them are (if everyone is fit) battling for the last 2 spots, or playing somewhere else on the field (Samo is clearly best 22, may or may not be played back).

Does your carlton backline win a premiership does it? No. four talls and no Newman or Simpson. This backline loses nearly every inside 50 to richmond. ALL OF THEM in the wet.

Not comparing him to guys his size. Comparing tomlinson to wingers which seems to be where people think he would play for us. Don’t need another tall for key position.

If he’s playing wing he lacks agility and speed.

I disagree, it is what gives him the point of difference in the modern game.

No longer the 70's 80's where players played a specified area, Tomlinson could drag his opponent forward and out mark them

And his speed would rival many quicker, smaller players

Don’t understand the Newman hate on here. Guy was a free hit and was unbelievable last year. He’ll be central in getting papley over the line as they were close from their Sydney days

Don't think there is any Newman hate?
Just that he'll be in the mix to play regularly, rather than clearly in at this stage.

Jones, Weitering and Plow can take defensive posts. Marchback to push up onto the wing.

Don't need Tomlinson, need Marchbank to go through the same program brackets did so that he is leaner and has a bit of burst.
Imo he is the first one to go as we already have what he offers in our backline. He gets to replace jones once he gets past it. But for now we can only play 3/4 if we expect to be successful.

My backline

Newman Jones simpson
Docherty Weitering Plowman

Int: SPS

Yeh, I reckon the Cows would be happy for a salary dump, even for part of his salary. If he ends up at Carlton, we'd be giving up little for him trade wise.

They're just posturing at the moment.

Simpson’s is squeezed... we don’t need 25 sideways kicks next year and lack speed and skill in the backline.

The same Richmond who’s best 22 backline has Rance, Astbury, Grimes and Broad?

Feels like it kind of mirrors Jones, Weitering, Marchbank and Plowman...

It's the making of a gun backline.
Don't see Simmo winning a Premiership unless it's next year.

Against Richmond, Jones to Lynch, Weitering to Riewoldt, Plowman to Dusty, Marchy plays intercept. It would be one of the best backlines in the league to match up on the Tiges.

Ideally we would have a great line-breaker HBF, but they would be taking Newman or Simpson's position, not Marchbank's.

People who don't rate Newman are as ignorant and silly as DT supporters. And I will leave it at that.

Been a superb pick up by the club. Superb.

Some people who won a zillion dollar lottery would still find a reason to complain.
Honestly the Papley factor is the last train of thought when it comes to Newman.

Nic did a bloody damn good job, and exceeded all expectations filing the giant void that Docherty's absence has left in our half back line.. And maybe instead of picking on the flaws on his game (such as his kicking, which I admit could do with a tad improvement) why don't we praise the lad on a fantastic first season for the Blues and commend the work ethic and professionalism he has bought to the club, and how he is a great role model for The kids on Our list.

Sorry to the Nic Newman haters, I ain't buying what you are trying to peddle on us, take that to the Nuffies on AFL Pages. You disrespect Newman, You disrespect Elmer. Capish???

Sorry for going OTT, but Newman is now a firm favourite of mine after one season.

8 years ago. Scully is the only Giant to have clocked a quicker TT than Tomlinson in recent history, and he’s better than our lot.

Ed might best him but I’d be surprised if anyone else does regularly.
Tomlinson was their best 2011 draftee in the 3km so I guess it just shows that 8 years ago the Giants lacked good runners from there first draft intake.

Tom Williamson ran 9.50 40 seconds quicker over 3kms in his draft combine and he isn't in our top 5.
